Hello Craig, your Marty is great and your playing too.I like australian guitars. Have you ever tried John Price or Ashley Sanders guitars? What do ypu think about them?
Really Good Hey, man! Really beautiful sound for an aussie guitar ;)
Congratulations, i'm still perfectioning my interpretation and i'll steal something from yours, if you don't mind! I like the end of the fast phrase where legatos are and the way you do it!
I also play this piece and I hope some time in the future I will be able to play it like you. Your Simon Marty guitar has a wonderfully sensitive sound. Or is it you who plays so wonderfully?
Awesome stuff craig... It's my Courtney by the way... that ever so cool 1st year guitarist guy ; )
...mmm ya gotta love that Marty... I'm still considering a Marty... but probably a Robin Moyes because they are cheaper... still haven't decided ceder or spruce though
They're all mass produced guitars and that doesn't work for acoustics like it does for electrics. Because the wood needs very fine adjustments to get the maximum resonance they need to be hand made. This guitar is a Simon Marty guitar, hand made in Australia.
But for electrics I'll go Fender any day!!! I'm a big Stevie Ray Vaughan and Hendrix fan.
Thanks for the tip, its just that my dads a "soft" guitarist and he lost his old guitar when his ex-girlfriend chucked it out the window of his old apartment. Not sure what brand it was? How much would you say a hand made is. A good one. Just a general price rang. He bought me my first American strat so I owe him.
In Australia you can get a Martin for around $2000 AUD which I guess is around $1500 USD. Look up Martin Guitars on the web. They're the best steel string acoustics but to be honest, i know more about nylon classicals than steel strings which sounds like the kind of thing you are after.
Lovely playing, Craig. I'll bet you love that guitar. My son plays one I bought for him about four years ago; he's playing in the Sydney Guitar Quartet, and they all play Martys. As you can guess, the sound is heavenly. I'll try to get the recording I made of them doing Phil Houghton's "Opals" up on youtube when I figure out the technology:)
Thanks, I've been talking via youtube with a guy from Sydney con that plays a Marty and learns from Greg Pickler and Phil Houghton. His youtube name is Thisdream. Maybe your son? or one of the other guys from the quartet?
Anyway, please have a look at some of my other videos. This is not one of the better ones I think .
Well, it's one of them, for sure. Apropos your performance of "Un Dia", I admire it because I think you've got the right balance of sensitivity and "majesty", if I can use that word. I love all of Brouwer's pieces, anyway. My son did "El Decameron" for his 4th year recital - a tough bit of work, but so sublime.
Now that I've gone through the score, I must say I really like some of the choices you've made - some very nice touches. Did you keep the first chord in measure 33 the same as the first chord in measure 32 for simplicity's sake?
My version was hand written by maximo diego pujol and I it was given to me by him at a guitar festival so there may be some differences to the original. I have also taken some ideas from a flute and piano version I have on CD.
Beautiful phrasing, Craig. I've got something else to bug you about: would you tell me what kind of video camera and mic set up you're using? It's just great. Thanks for sharing these pieces.
It's a cheap 800,000 pixel (0.8 megapixel) panasonic DV camera. Simultaneously to the video, I record the sound using a couple of good Behringer mics onto my laptop using cubase. I add a little reverb for good measure (the room does not sound good). Then I add the audio track to the video in windows movie maker and fade out the crappy video audio before exporting. The audio you hear is the actual playing you see but recorded separately.

i like your piece, too, it's very leisurely paced, you take your time well with it and it's perfect...

I'm grateful you introduced me to this piece.
Thanks,

Nice guitar and playing. To go with all the emotionality of the piece and the playing, you got a wedding picture at the upper left. Very touching.
