Im new to djing, and one of the ways i use to search for new music is youtube.Lots and lots, of channels and djs promote the tracks and the artists. If it wasn't for youtube i wouldn't know half of the songs i know. I made a tribute video, to my favorite Dj, Afrojack (don't judge my taste), and it was blocked of course. I included his website, facebook, and tracklist on the desription. So how can others use music they don't own the rights, and don't get blocked by copyrights?
It's Music... Music is Made to be shared.... Guess some People or Companies are that Greedy and too Stupid to realize that People like Ellaskins help promoteTheir Music.... If It wasn't for him I would have never known who Majority of these Artist are and never would have BOUGHT their music on TOP of Being Inspired to Become a DJ.... F!@#% Douch Bags.... Bet they Also Sue their GRANDMOTHERS for a stupid reason too....
hey jon, you have your produb licence ya? I mean your a DJ from the U.K. as far as I understand about copyrights in the U.K. as long as your properly licensed "they" can't do anything to you... I can understand why youtube just revokes peoples channels as they don't want to be shut down by the american copyright laws or their organizations or even face lawsuit from them. I mean in america about 10 years ago a 12 year old was sued for over a million dollars for copyright infringement........
sound waves being pushed around by money rather than a real artistic meaning, like having a audience, crazy cycle of monkey talk. I just put headphones on :)
In my opinion, current copyright laws are broken. Djs, for example, are in the right to post videos such with remixes, original content, etc. What Ellaskins was doing was under fair use.
I personally dont understand why they bitch about songs being uploaded on youtube. At first, the sound quality of youtube videos is proper shit, second, you can ofcourse rip the songs from the youtube videos but then it will still only be in 256kbps quality max. Which doesnt even sound like a legit 256 mp3 song. Ofcourse you can transcode it to 320, but still the quality cant compete with a legitimate 320 mp3 thats bought from a webstore and will be damaging for the ears ifur gonna play it live
An Interesting Point You Raise Here, I Personally Think That By You Using These Tracks It Is Promoting The Track And NOT Breaching Copyright , I Mean How Many People Have Watched Your Video's And Then Bought The Track From A Pay Per Track Site? Surely You're Doin These Company's A Favour
first of if you register youre own made music you pay a good amount of money. in return these copyright organisations wil make sure people will pay to play your music in public. the problem is that they make deals with clubs, radiostations and any other place that plays a lot of music. the deals mean the pay one amount an then they don't have to make a list of every single song they play. this money doesn't actually go to any artist.
All i can say is that,as a DJ,i'm usually looking for an extended version of the tune i'm searching for,but sometimes i can only find either radio edit or just a promo, and it's really annoying coz maybe you can't buy this guy and that other guys music in an ordinary store coz they both of em are not so famous.Another thing is that i might just don't wanna buy an entire album, just to use one tune on it!
It's really a problem for us people in Sweden where Dance music isn't mainstream............
Record labels are taking music posted online (legally or illegally) WAY too seriously. Every year the RIAA puts so much time and effort into stopping illegal file sharing. What the music industry needs to realize is that this problem isn't going to go away anytime soon. In fact, it will never go away as long as blogs, YouTube, and the Internet as a whole are still in existence. Record labels need to adapt with the times and understand that music promo now has a new meaning.
they should invent some kinda system that if you play a song through a speaker system (not earphones headphones) you have to pay 1 cent per 2 or 10 times playing xD) I know its probably impossible, but it would be a nice solution.
1.30 are songs at beatport? so that'd mean you can play the song 13000 times through a speaker system, I guess thats fair..
Google is a Dick-tatorship. I understand the copyright laws, just as you said, who in there right mind would down load music from a Youtube video, to use it to distribute, or to play at a fuction? That makes no sense, just non-sense. It's a bunch of Lawyers, with there hands in everything we do. When ever they see any chance to make some money, they are all over it. It called leverage. I hate bullies, and that is what they are. They should be paying you for promoting them.
The key is here that if DJ's and radio stations, clubs etc stopped playing the music the promotion of each track would be harder, so in the long run they should be greatful that we the DJ's are promoting them.
Apparently there's going to be a dedicated site for music videos etc. launching in a few months, called VEVO. Instead of music videos being here, they'll be on VEVO and there'll be more ads and stuff.
As far as using clips in personal videos, I though that YouTube had settled with all the majors - so presumably any claims now must be from the small fry.
I think it's absolute crap that I got one of my minimixes deleted for using friggin' 30 SECONDS (!!!!) of music from a certain label! My minimixes are made for promotion reasons in the first place! WTF?!
I do think that if there are DJs out there using music illegally they might get a slight message. But I don't feel this will stop them from using the music. Its corporate maneuvering to make a basically weak attempt to control music usage. I think J you were a pawn in this game and the companies used you. This from the label making the complaint. I do think Youtube is not the bad guy for the most part. As your efforts promotes the channel. But they are in bed with the music label company anyway.
I think that when a individual or companies get a following that is as big as yours. They use it as a political movement to try to stop the flow of music being used illegally. Knowing that by taking the channel down they can send a message to hundreds of thousands of people around the world to stop using music that doesn't belong to them. Unfortunately they used an educational channel to facilitate this. They may have got the message through but it damages their reputation on youtube.
busting after music under UTube is totally wrong imho since the content provided here is by far REALLY poor quality and unmixable or reusable at all.
For music UTube is growing into something that deals with creation history since people just upload & keep here some dusts of human creativity. I have allready bought legal content on vinyl/CD/mp3 because I came here to discover a new cool song.
Those majors asking google to cut & censorship the videos seems me like those old christian monks keeping their scrolls secret awaiting for the fire to burn all of their existence to the universal knowledge. That sad POV since they are more on burying artists than promoting them by doing this.
Ok First off. Don't shoot the messenger. It's not YouTubes fault for Copyright infringement. To Start any one wanting to play any copyrighted material outside of a private environment requires a 'PRS'. This is the defining line. We know that the music that gets uploaded here is copyrighted and permission has to be granted. For you to broadcast this material in pratically any other form other that Radio or Television you require a 'PPL'.
Although there is a moral difference between what J does and someone blatantly uploading a complete song as far as copyright is concerned both are still broadcasting material and a license is required.
As a side note in reality, you blasting tunes out of you car stereo constitutes broadcasting.
However both PRS and PPL in UK have no license for 'On Demand' music/video content. This is because their members havn't granted such permission for an individual to subscribe to.
This is why Youtube have contacted the Copywriters individually and have paid a fee to broadcast that material. It is YouTube's responsibility to get the permission to us. as an example: Like it's the pub owners job to have a PRS and PPL for a DJ to play on their premisses.
If YouTube doesn't have the authority to broadcast they will ask you to get it. So this is where the fall down happens. Because most companies won't talk to an individual.
So YouTube suspending an account is a cop out as this would be like the pub owner kicking the DJ out because the pub owner didn't get the permission to broadcast. Unfortunately this is YouTube's 'train-set' and they get to play with it how they see fit. We either play to their rules or we can delete our account.
Broadcasting is broadcasting and there are no variants of grey. If you have a copyright issue YouTube should be able to give the contact info for you to take it further.
I don't really understand because I have uploaded several videos with just the whole track, but YouTube have just matched the content and have put a link to ITunes... Surely they would do the same on everybodys videos and not suspend accounts? im confused :S never mind that makes a change! haha
Toby, what I think that comes down to is the companies that own the music. For instance Universal Music Group was nice enough to let us play part of a song, they basically paid and agreed with Google to let them auto ID the tune. Other companies such as Warner chose not to do this at all and simply didn't want any of their music online without their permission.
I agree. We don't upload full versions of music just snippets and as DJ's we are helping to promote the music. Mr and Mrs Jones down the road upload a full record to share to everyone on download sites, we on here promote snippets. I think copyrights need to get a grip and start coming down on the Joe Blogs out there, instead of the people in the industry who help to promote it. About time the industry reconized DJ's. Some help for us would be nice instead of grief.
This copyright crap is ridiculous. I agree J, if they want something to do then they need to go after the people uploading perfect stereo tracks on here. Not people such as yourself, for giving a demo. I mean, haha, how do you give a demo or tutorial with no music? But yeah, I back up your thoughts on this 100%.
unlucky mate. I keep getting audio disabled on some of my videos but seem to get round it by using the whole "fair use" through the dispute process. I've used it loads but Im pretty sure my account will get suspended soon, its only a matter of time :0(
(message to long)PS:Keep up the good work, i learned (still Learning everyday :P) with you m8, cheers from Portugal.
