Yes the original way is played with a pick. I hate picking but i find its the best way to get the attack and speed of the song. granted i havent been playing bass for too long. the reason i think everyone says the pick sounds harsh is just the tone of the basses used in most vids. You cant beat a Ernie Ball MM . lol..

@abranco87 Pick hater. There is no wrong way to play bass. Picks, fingers, pop-slap, you can even use a slide. Different ways create different tones.
