Ugh, if you read the BBS novels, you might actually pity Vanitas. D: I do, a bit, though at that point in the game that he's introduced in BBS his personality seems beyond repair.
Wiki the term "Vanitas" to learn something cool about the reason behind the name Vanitus: "In the arts, vanitas is a type of symbolic work of art especially associated with Northern European still life painting in Flanders and the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th centuries, though also common in other places and periods. The word is Latin, meaning "emptiness" and loosely translated corresponds to the meaninglessness of earthly life and the transient nature of vanity."
I think you can see a hint of Vanitas "Don't want to suffer anymore" backstory in the game, too. At the end of Ven's story, when the X-blade is seemingly destroyed, Vanitas has a surprisingly desperated and sad look on his face. Because of that expression on his face I searched the internet if there wasn't more to him than him just being plain evil. Glad there IS more to him (I love him), though I kinda doubt you can consider the manga "canon".
@VanitasTheSentiment Well Vanitas isn't exactly pure darkness. If I'm not mistaken, he's a manifestation of Ven's negative emotions. So he literally knew nothing but wrong, hence why he's pictured as a Villain. Although, I do feel sorry for the guy.
@TheRikka21 he is the darkness in ven's heart. he IS darkness. the negativity that become the unversed, well vanitas himself says it perfect.
" It happened when you and I were split into two. the negativity took shape as these monsters. they are what I feel, a horde of fledgling emotions under my control."
so its what he feels, not what he IS. there was a whole cutscene about the dark half of ven's heart. his creation I mean.
@DoinkTonberry That doesn't prove anything. Yes, Yoko made Sora and Roxas theme songs, and then another person made Vanitas theme song which has some similarities to Sora and Roxas'.
Also it was stated in a BBS related interview once that none of the Vanitas related songs were made by Yoko.
@MetalMephiles2 I think it's more he wanted to be evil, and the x-blade would help with that. It's not he's evil because he wants the x-blade. He wants the x-blade because he's evil.
@TheRikka21 nope he had a reason too, in a real birth by sleep novel it said he was in constant pain and agony so he wanted to make the x blade so he could make the pain go away.
@3582xionlover its japan exclusive maybe, but vanitas was miserable cuz ven had a family and he didnt, and how whenever an unversed was slain hed feel pain. Everybody, type in Vanitas Backstory Revealed its a good read.
@EXOarts Aww... Now I feel sorry for him. All he wanted was happiness, and he was so close to achieving it... Sora better save Vanitas in Kingdom Hearts 3!
@TheRikka21 That's cause evil was all he was. Literally.
It's kinda a given considering he was made up of pure darkness. Even a guy like Ansem, Seeker of Darkness had a previous being and life. He was evil, but for a reason at least. Heartless in general, even they aren't the pure darkness that Vanitas was made up of.
The Heartless were after all, hearts. Corrupted, but still. They used to be something, used to possess something more. Vanitas didn't have or was anything to begin with.
@TheRikka21 i thought this too until i heard about his blank points revealed in the BBS novels.
SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS
Basically, upon vanitas' creation, he was more like ventus, and he destroyed the unversed until he realized that the unversed came from him and caused him pain whenever one was destroyed. He lived a cycle of endless pain until Xehanort manipulated him into thinking that forging the X-blade would be the only path to salvation, forging his cold and more evil exterior
@TheRikka21 No offense, but that's like saying Vile's a bigger villain than Sigma, which isn't even close. It also risks implications of a lot of other twisted theories that I won't even freakin' start on. -_-

I don't think they're implying that Sigma isn't a Villain, because IMO what often makes a villain a great villain is exactly the reasons why they do what they do, which oftentimes, we come to realize aren't as bad or selfish as they seem. Villains just evil for evil are a lot less interesting, but a bit eerier because they seem to have no basis for their acts.
@Zellig That doesn't really counter anything, but it's still solid logic to go on.
Also, we rightly can't go on about this. After reading further on the subject, I'd like to say this whole thing is a moot issue, because of Vanitas' ultimate end goal. The dude literally being made of evil would be 525058's excuse, but that by itself just doesn't seem like enough. Vanitas DID appear to have his own plans, but his ultimate goal was right in line with Master Xehanort's ultimate scheme.
@MettCobalt So while Vile isn't a bigger or more well developed Villain than Sigma by any means (also dont assume everyone knows who these chars are, just saying XD some people are probably confused) Vile is certainly more detestable (I guess it would be better to say vile is more despicable than Sigma, not a 'better villain) because his entire purpose in the game just seems to be about fulfilling his own sadistic joys.
@525058 Depends, the confusion would create something like Dissidia (Some good guys on the bad side, and some bad guys on the good side), still.... Vanitas is a no good son of a...!!
@525058 and @TheRikka21 not true Vanitas was a villain because he wanted to end his suffering. He created Unversed and attacked them which hurt him since they were his emotions. Xehanort told him the only way to end his suffering was to join with Ven to make the x-blade. Vanitas thought he was weak so he fought the Unversed till he couldn't anymore that's when Xehanort told him the Ven is the key to stop the suffering. Check his wiki out it will tell you everything. But he is EPIC! : )
Van IS an Unversed, the first of them. Also, Vanitas is pure darkness – he wouldn't feel any sadness except for the moment where he saw his power (the X-Blade) being taken away from him right before his eyes. The Wiki is just speculation, lol. But that isn't a bad idea; Nomura could make it work!
@525058 I actually read the book well my cousin read Vanitas's book in Japanese then translated it in English for me. I clearly stated that Vanitas was confused about why he exist. It was kinda sad... :(
@525058 He's not exactly an unversed. He's similar but it's far more accurate to say he just makes them. Also, having darkness doesn't make you evil. It's just more common. Eraqus is a great example. Being such a light based person and then attacking his own students in a blind rage. Too much of either is bad for you. Just as darkness can cloud your heart, light can blind it.
I would lean towards the light – Eraqus wasn't blind, he just wanted to protect Ven from becoming the X-Blade and even with Terra he just didn't want him to become like Xehanort did (obsessed with the Keyblade War and ultimate power). xD
@525058 Yes, protecting Ven by killing him is very sane. Rather than just...protecting him. Then, Terra tries to defend his friend and he tries to kill him without a second thought. He veiws everything dark as evil and must be exterminated. Even though Terra was a good person the second he showed dark power he tried to kill him. The second his best friend Xehanort showed dark power he stopped trying to reason with him and tried to kill him. He is blinded by his hatred of the dark. Even though
was this song actually in those two games?

A number of people have told me that Kefka is the most evil Square villain of all.

rpggame16 10 months ago
@rpggame16 I'm not quite sure. Only know this from an interview I read for some time ago.
However, I looked at the Wiki page for KH BBS and it listed these three people as composers for the game:
Yoko Shimomura
Tsuyoshi Sekito
Takeharu Ishimoto
So I guess it must be either Tsuyoshi Sekito or Takeharu Ishimoto who made the Vanitas songs.
