Why does everyone think that the Dutch ectually come from the Netherlands, they don't. they ectually come from south-west Gemany. (those people that are called Hollanders in Dutch anyway). They were the Franconian infaders of the "Low Lands" (Friesland and Saksen). Under theyr leader Karel Martél they slew almost all the Friesians and stole their lands, then they turned, under Karel de Grote (Charlemain), their attention, and agression, to the Saxons. So not evryone in the Netherlans is Dutch.
@Twenthejroin The Netherlands are a mess of Frisians, Germans, Celts, Franks, etc. The Netherlands doesn't 'belong' to anyone and anyone who thinks they have more of a right to be here than others sucks. (I'm Dutch, descended from Frisians and Celts)
@1991Tijmen1991 Well I didn't say anything about the Netherlands "Belonging" to any one did I?? My point is mearly that not evryone from the Netherland is DUTCH (FRANKONIAN) but also FRISIAN and SAKSON (mainly) (Celts in the Netherlans came mostly from Braband, Frisians from Zeeland, Z. Holland, Utrecht, N. Holland Friesland and Groningen, Saksons from Gelderland, Utrecht, Overijsel and Drente and the Franks came from Limburg (the regions extended beond modern national borders))
@malingmann well i dont want to be a picky one, but to it was the "holy roman Empire of german nations"....just saying :) and gosh with that long name its no wonder that most of the people call it Hre^^
@MrMulti90 Well.. in medieval times the Dutch, Austrians etc were also considered as Germans. But they had their seperate cultural evolutions and eventually got nations of their own. Just sayin.
@GreyKarma4 What?? thats new to me! were these countries not one big nation (HRE of ...) i was thinking that in the middle age all the german speaking countries belonged to the empire... exept switzerland of course^^
@MrMulti90 Then again the ''Dutch'' are a pretty old faction so I guess they weren't ''real'' germans. Especially since they have their own country nowdays.
@GreyKarma4 thats true but i think that there is a connection between the dutch and the germans. Ok dutch and german are today two languages but they are similar maybe i can t speak dutch but two or three words i can understand and they sound german to me ( dutch people: please dont hate me for saying this ^^)
Dutch is a germanic language(not german) very alike languages once existed in the western part of the Holy Roman Empire,a continuum that was broken,by the Prussian unification of Germany and the centralization of power that followed.
This album is awesome!. Especially now when I am busy with my family tree. I try to find my own ancestors. And I think that they lived in the same time Karel lived. But it's hard to find it..
@malingmann Holy R. Empire was composed by many territories of modern european lands - Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, The Netherlands, etc. The process of gettin' its own unique identirty on the territory of the NL was almost finished up to the time of K. van Egmont, thus makin' his struggle a milestone on transition from the intrinsic conflicts to the struggle against the ruler from the outside.
Dank u.

@777Chaosworm Think it was the "Holy Roman Empire (Germany in the medieval ages)", which had an emperor... then; in the emperors name!

Vrijheid voor Gelre helder voor ogen
Brandend en blakend, knieval gewroken
Klauwen van Habsburg, altijd bestreden
Strijdbaar gebleven, tot aan zijn dood
Vaandels drijvend in de wind
Westwaarts de troepen
Van Egmond voert Gelre aan
De hertog neemt wraak!
