I don't really understand Herzog's last sentence. What's wrong with being cows in the field? I mean, except for the fact that we obviously are not. If he used that expression as to describe wilderness and "uncivilisation", well, everyone can notice how quiet and civilised cows can be in their fields. I think animals are seriously overlooked when it comes to think of behaviour and what mankind "is not". Indeed manking should learn from animal. I wonder if watching "Grizly Man" would be inspiring.

He is talking about art. He sees it as an articulation of experiance. What seperates us from the animals is that we can artuculate our feelings and comment on our experiaence. Which is art. Without art we would be like cows in a field: serving our purpose blindly, adding nothing to the collective conciousness of our species.

I like the idea of art as"articulation of experience".However i think we articulate art more than we articulate experience.How many times are we unable to express what happens to us?I guess art is born out of that attempt (at articulating)- which inevitably fails.I like this cause to accept failure is to accept being human.Still I sense a derogatory accent in Herzog's last sentence which i don't like.Perhaps because i'm eternally fascinated by the animal world.Maybe my sensing is wrong.But.

I guess it's a reaction to experiance more than it is an attempt to articulate it. In either case, I think Herzog's last sentance exemplifies his unique genious. It's insightful and strange. Just like his best movies.

Well you see... i do not think such thing as a "genius" exists, i believe that is a false concept. As Herzog himself puts it in this interview: "All these dreams are yours as well and the only distinction between me & you is that i can articulate them [...] I make films because i have not learnt anything else". As humans, we are all 'Insightful and strange', however hard we try to repress this. Fortunally there are events like Herzog's films to remind us.

I meant to write "We're NOT being fed...". It's understandable and useful now, I guess. If not, nevermind, you're obviously an idiot anyhow. What do you think we learn by studying a cows behaviour? Do you think cows should teach us how to express ourselves? A cow is about accepting nature as it is and embracing it. Art is in most cases about the opposite. You're probably right, when saying that a cow isn't in as much anguish as Van Gogh, but the way of the cow still isn't desirable.
