Beautiful grouping of colorful healthy Discus, but needs higher-res camera, less zooming. I have a old 44 gal. and went to my local glass shop for about $20, they cut and edged a sheet of glass that covers the top, just wide enough for air tubes and so I can feed them. I just put the light on top of the glass. REALLY cuts down evaporation to about 1gal/week.
@starmon2 Yes i know, the camera ant the movie maker is bad, i know :) The inexisting top glass on the tank is on purpose, It alow the plants e flowers to grow out of the tank.
i was told by my local fish guy that discus hate bright lights and wouldn't do well since the plants need bright lights.....i would love to set up a tank like this...i just bought a 125 gal and my friends are trying to make me go salt water but i keep explaining how beautiful discus are. ok so here is what i have so far....125 gal. lights but they are reg lights...i have 1 renastar xp3 canister filter. i would luv to learn how to care for a planted + discus tank please help
Discus fish in they´re natural habitat live in dark waters, but the experience i have so far is that as long you create places where Discusb can go when they´re frightened, there´s no problem!!! Discus like refugee´s, if you staged light where you can alternate from full to half power between your fotoperiod you will have no problems whats so ever...
Since the beginningof planting to the time i made the video it went around 1 1/2 year. This is my first planted aquarium, it took me a lot of reading hours to learn how to take care of plants, and of course the failures lead to improves. In the beginning i had weeks in a row when i changed 100...150 liters of waters per day to remove excess of nutrients from water column, all to combate algaes plagues, cianobacteries, etc, etc
I got my freshwater 20 gallon long tank's water tested the lady said in a few hours my water will go cloudy then after 3 days I can add fish do i need to add stuff to my water before adding fish to get the water clear
@indianjoe27 everything is fine but the ph is about 6.2. Do you know anything I should do? The lady at the petstore said in few hours your tank will go cloudy then 3 days after that you can add fish. Do I need to add anything to the water to get it clear?
The ph at 6.2 is not bad. For example you can add fish that like acid water like discus, tetras and others. Did you add anything to your water to raise the PH is that it? The cloudy water is a consequence of it? Sorry you must explain yourself better and detailed....
@indianjoe27 I never added anything to the water for the ph. The lady at the store never said why it would go cloudy. Back to my first ? do I need to add something to the water for the cloudy promblem?
@indianjoe27 Yes the only problem now is she lied to me saying some of the fish I got will grow to a couple of inches I looked online they can grow to 12 inches.
(It was kissing gouramis) Now guess you has to get a 50 or 55 gallon tank for about 10 fish:-)
Pearl Jam \m/ saw them a couple weeks ago at ACL!!! amazing show. and I love your tank man, Im planning on getting a large planted tank going somtime this year.
i was thinking of switching from cichlids to discus, but everyone tells me that water quality is very very important. do all the plants tdo the cleaning of the bottom for you? how often do you do water changes?
A good water quality it's important no mater what kind of fish you put in your tank. What kind of cichlids do you have? Keep in mind that are cichlids that like a water PH of 8.0 and more, and Discus Fish like it around 6-7. Be aware to the kind of substrate and rocks and it's origin.... But more important of all, read a lot about Discus fish, they are strong but you must know how to take care of them.
Plants wont clean the bottom of the tank, you still have to vac, plants just help keep nitrates down b/c the plants will use it to photosynth. You still have to do wc's.
I'm taking the risk of being bombed by saying this....
At this stage my aquarium is balanced, and by personal experience i get to the conclusion that if you make several waters changes, you will stress the fish, and they will get sick often. Discus are strong fish, but they dont like stress, so at this moment i only replace the water that evaporizes and i'm getting very good results with it.
perfect music( is it TOOL?) and tank. But i m surprised, how u got these planted carpet with such few lightening??? 350 l and there are only 240wt, when it s about 350 wt necessary?
Your tank's absolutely classy. If you don't mind my asking, how did you plant the plants on the substrate and is the substrate some kind of special material? Thanks!
You have to use a good subsrate mix, people have there own ideas of what works. But just as important is great lighting for the ground covering plants. they need atleast 3 wpg or they will not grow or they will start growing up to find light instead of staying small and spreading
that tank + Ocean rock spread right through the back + beautiful malawi cichlids (lots of them + white sand + good filtration + led blue light + day light...==
you dont =D the plants do it for you...you just GENTLY (hover your siphon about 1 in over the ground cover plants) to pick up any lose stuff other than that + your WC thats all the cleaning you really do.
It's not gravel, but a substract named akadama used in Bonsai's.
I dont clean it, i've Pitbull fish and lots of Melanoïdes tuberculata that eats rest's of food. What it stay's on the substract it's food for the plant's :)
yo man your tanks looks sweet but i was wondering why your blue discuss has a bustes up top fin and also if your spotted bushy nose likes to eat your plants
Hey can anyone tell me how to make aplanted aquarium like this? Or how to get the grassy bottom, ive been trying for months. This is a really nice tank, its perfectly done.
The plants you're looking for are (Hemianthus micranthemoides) and (eleocharis acicularis)

if your fish keeps trying to jump out of the tank, it means that your fish isnt happy. u should observe ur fish carefully see if its the other fishes that are attacking it or its not used to its environment. i hope i helped.
That's a factor to be aware, if your discus are being attacked by other, there is a chance of he jumping out of the aquarium, but it is a remote chance!!!!
depends on wat kind of fish you hav....some of them jus luv to jump out, some doesnt. and also the space provided matters. lot of space and secure feeling reduces the resaons for a fish to jump out
