Canto, hokkien, and some others(that i forgot...) is classified under the chinese category. Most "older" chinese people knows canto and hokkien. The newer gen's people only knows chinese.

They are grouped on the words. Cantonese have got no letters of their ow, thus grouped with chinese. But the speaking is totally different(some sound alike, but not all).

If you know chinese you will at least know abit of cantonese and hokkien.

That's an advantage :)
