I had the same surgery two years ago. The day I walked out of the surgeon's office was the first day in my life I wore my hair up in a pony tail! Until then I was so self conscious because my ears stuck out. The cartliedge would also pop and grind when I would lay my head down on my pillow at night. So loud! The surgery was truly life changing. Good luck with your new ears!

Im 39 now - having used one of my student loans my first year after college to get the procedure done. But even now whenever someone walks by me laughing - my first gut instinct is that they are laughing at me. Really was rough growing up and kids (and adults) can be cruel. I grew up with this and was picked on horribly and mercilessly my whole child & teenage life getting called things like "dumbo ears" or "radar dishes" (to name just a couple of the insults). I have life long emotional issues about it - having been able to "hear every slam" (a semi-joke).

Painwise, (10 being the worst pain and 1 being no pain) It's about a 3, so dont worry about the pain if you want this done, its more uncomfortable if anything. If it does get painful they give you strong tablets.

I had otoplasty 1yr ago. I was awake during the whole operation ,the ears were numbed. A couple of needles to the ear and one down the colar bone area. Once the needles were over with I was quite relaxed. Took about 1hr 25min and wore a bandage and protective padding for the ears for 10 days. In Australia cost my $2,800. Can't believe I waited so long to have it done. Doc never got my photo, he he.

Do it, but plz take your time when choosing a doc. Make sure you see b4 and after photos of others. Listen to doc and tell him exzactly what you want. Scan his voice and behaviour for professionalism. See if you can get a reference from somebody else. I am the same as you when it comes to photos, so relax your not wierd, you just want to be normal and that is ok.
