ive been watching this halau since Na wai eha o Puna and the dancer at 4:00 been dancing since the 80's. MAKA'I!! does anybody know his name?he's awesome!
I love how there's a samoan in there (the on that gets the sogaimiki later i assume as he doesn't have it during this performance) way to rep multiculture love it!!
I love the fact that they use the same hula ka`i and hula ho`i for each competition. It demonstrates the kumu's strong sense of tradition, establishment of foundation, and pride in his own style. When you see Ke Kai O Kahiki's hula ka`i and ho`i, you know that it's uniquely them - powerful and masculine. The kumu doesn't need to search for the magic combination...he knows exactly what works, and he goes with it! Akamai no ho`i! And when they perform their choice mele, they kick butt!
@ainohea. Yes! I totally agree. Thanks for posting your comment. I am Maori from Aotearoa. Please does Kahiko mean 'old'? If I am translating right kahiko is tawhito in our language meaning an old or traditional piece? Kane is tane meaning men. I think this is just beautiful. Strong, polished, disciplined. This only comes from suberb leadership. Patuki taku manawa!
@rhniraq it's call tradition....much like everyone else that does: Ho'opuka e ka la....duh! most halau would barely make it through Puka Mai....and would kill over dancing their competition chant after it....lol!!!
I agree. And on a personal note, these men are the most humble individuals that I know and are professionals in their occupations. Imua Ke Kai O Kahiki aka Na Wai Eha O Puna
love it!!! i super love how at 2:16 they form a heart!!! great performance!! i could watch all day long!!

It's a great halau, but they show a penchant for doing the same ka'i in every competition: Puka Mai Ana Ka La Ma Puna.
rhniraq 2 years ago
And the same ho'i for that matter: Ho'i e, ho'i la.
