I think with the release of the PSN/Xbox live port of this game all of these are outdated. They were good and all but they didn't fix the collision detection at all from the original until the newest version. They also added new stuff like Tails and a spin dash that works (Not that I'm complaining. CD was in developement longer than Sonic 2 I assume) and they also gave the option to switch between JP/EU and USA soundtracks which was awsome.
Wow, so since the special stages for Sonic CD on the Gems collection runs at a faster than normal speed....that means I was technically playing on Hard mode O.o
@RabidKanid Even though I didn't like Sonic CD that much from playing it on Gems collection, after seeing this video and watching another persons video of the special stage I went and bought it anyway off of xbla. The change of physics, the addition of the Sonic2/3 spin dash and the slower rate for the special stages is a vast improvement and I am much more satisfied with this game than I have ever been before.
The PC used to have great ports of Sonic games, but overall I prefer the SEGA CD. It might have gotten less colours displayed (64 I think against 4096 I think), but it shows Sonic as he used to be (title screen), it ran smoother, and plus, it's the original hardware playing the original game.
I know I'm a minority, but I always preferred the US soundtrack to this game. Used to own it on Sega CD, perhaps it's just nostalgia. Just picked it up on Android, it's as fun as I remember. Sega needs to make more Sonic side-scrollers, he's a character who wasn't suited very well for 3D.
@ASocialClan Well first of all, the quality of the SFX does indeed suck, but it has it's charm. The anime framerate depends on the console you play the Gems Collection on. If you play the PS2 version, it's as fast as the Jam version. And who gives a shit over one stage not having the color change while underwater? And that's complaining over the least important thing about a game, graphics. The GC version has better anime shading and it has a few addons. So the GC port is better.
Hey, awesome video! Please make another showing the new PSN/XNLA vs Sega CD! Ive got this on my Xperia Play and it looks and plays awesomely. Absolutely hands down the best handheld sonic game ever!
@STOPNSWOPguy What would be the point? The new version would win hands down. True widescreen, three graphic filters (one reflects the original perfectly), and a superior special stage.
How is the special stage in the new version any different from the GameCube Gems version? I'm not calling you out, I'm legitimately curious. I still don't know whether or not I should pick this new one up yet.
@pedrovay2003 You ever notice how the UFO's choppily get closer and closer and throw you off? The new Sonic CD has it VERY nicely transition from far to close, but it still takes a bit to get the hang of your range (regardless, it's much more intuitive than the Sega CD and Sonic Gems Collection Sonic CD versions). Three other things I forgot to mention include two soundtracks, properly looped music, and the ability to play as Tails.
Well good news Sonic CD fans. Sonic CD comes out tomorrow on XBL and not only does it let you play as Tails after you beat the game. An option not included in the original and only 400 points ($4.99) The best part of all is that it lets you switch between the American and Japanese soundtrack. Now that is freakin awesome and makes it worth buying for that alone.
What confuses me about the water palettes is, for some reason, I recall the water in the "Past" edition of the level was kept in the Gems Collection port... yet the green color in the "Present" edition wasn't.
btw sonic with a wii remote is the best ! i have lots of hacked consoles and pc with loads of emulators and 360 wireless controller but my fav was always playing megadrive,pc engine and nes with the wii remote on it's side.
The gamecube version is running an emulator and you will notice the water level you cant see the proper colour of the water and this in it's self is actually an emulator issue on some pc emulator as well, the pal sega cd version with step up switch to 60hz is the best version and full 60fps,the video intro ending are stretched on the segacd hardware so it's smoother and larger screen as well ,but to be honest the best way to play is on a pc emulator that can emulate the segacd fully.
@bobsauce100 S&K Collection has trouble running on newer PCs, and technically so does the old port of Sonic CD. There's a new version of Sonic CD that should be hitting an online PC marketplace called Steam within the next few months, and you can pick up all the Genesis Sonics there, too.
@bobsauce100 If you're going to get those games, they're on steam and go on sale fairly often for dirt cheap. They have all the Sonic games from the Genesis/CD era.
as a child i owned the pc version of this...good times i also had the sonic and knuckles collection but i quit playing it after the barrel in carnival night zone, if only i knew all the fun that lay ahead i would have ventured on.
Mental note, find out if there's European version of Sonic Gems PC, and if not find out if the European Gamecube version uses the US or the JP/EU soundtrack...
Well Sonic CD is being given a digital re release in December 2011 with several enhancements such as wide screen TV support, and the option to utilise spin-dash physics from Sonic 2, plus Tails is an unlockable character in this game. This version for all regions contain the Japanease/european soundtrack, The U.S Soundtrack is not being re released due to licensing issues although Sega are looking into a solution.
I don't know why you crazy fans insist on arguing all the time. If it's not a PAL/NTSC Sonic 1 debate it's the fight over the Japanese-European Sonic CD soundtrack over the North American soundtrack.
BlazeHedgehog done a fantastic comparison of this game and i'm sure it's alot better than anything most of you could come up with and all you people do is nit-pick and try and point out something that he might've missed.
@EkajTheSwordsman Given that I own Sonic CD on the Sega CD, PC, and in Gems Collection, I can tell you that even though the Gems version was definitely ported from the PC version, it is not its equal.
@BlazeHedgehog Don't assume what I own. I own the PC version and the Gems Version, as well, and never play the PC version now that I have it on the GCN. In none of your comments have you even specified in what way it is inferior.
@BlazeHedgehog You never compared the PC to the Gems version in any of the gameplay segments. You only used the Sega CD and Gems versions for those, and the PC/Gems and Sonic Jam for the cutscenes. As far as I could tell, your video showed the cutscenes were better on the GCN than the PC, though not as good as Sonic Jam. The only visible difference between the CD and Gems during gameplay was the color of the water.
@EkajTheSwordsman That's because the PC version is visually identical to the Sega CD version. The only things in the PC version that aren't identical to the Sega CD version is the sound effect quality and the FMV quality. It was more worth it to compare the gulf in quality between Gems and Sega CD for the most part, and that was the intent of this video. I would have completely ignored the PC version entirely but I discovered I did not have a "Clear Game" save for the Sega CD emulator.
@EkajTheSwordsman the gamecube controller sucks for control play it with megadrive controller(segaCD) or on ps2 the d pad on the gamecube is one of the worst dpads going, just alittle better than xbox dpad lol
I remember when playing the original PC port as a kid on the Tidal Tempest stage, I mainly use to get thirsty and always had the urge to drink ginger ale. Why? Because the water was yellow-ish green (The color of said soda) and the female singer in the music emitting these "ah" sounds at 2:40 & 2:47 makes it sound like as if she's on one of those soda commercials, normally once they are done showing off taking a sip. Even still up to this day, I get thirsty playing this stage. @_@
I forgot how much I hated the US soundtrack to Sonic CD. I must confess, however, that I did play the Sonic Boom CD that Sega gave us journalists back in the '90s. Blame that on my lack of musical exposure, heh.
Did they forget to change the water color in the gems collection version? It really makes no sence @ All due to the fact that the gems version was supposed to be the improved version
Also, pretty sure that there was credits in Sonic Gems Collection for every game in the bundle, so credits after finishing the remade wasn't completely necessary.
Oh noes, there are a few differences between the Sega CD version and the PC version. RAAAWWWRRRR SEGA FUCKED UP YET AGAIN WHY DO THEY HATE US FUCKING MONEY-EATERS RIPPING US OFF RUINED FOREVER HATE RAGE SNARL WEEPING AND GNASHING OF TEETH WHAT TRUE SONIC FAN CAN CONDONE THIS EVIL HORRIBLE ATROCITY?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
@GoGojiraGo I am pretty sure everybody who's name was in the credits wouldn't be happy that some c-list developer did a sloppy job and completely removed any record of them having worked on the game. The other stuff doesn't make the game unplayable, but it still means it's not a very good version of Sonic CD. I guess when it's your only option you take what you can get, but contrary to what internet memes would have you believe, Bear Grylls doesn't drink his pee because it tastes good.
@BlazeHedgehog No idea what Bear Grylls has to do with Sonic, try to keep the discussion on topic, please. We lost the credits, whoopee, there's plenty of sites that list the people who made Sonic CD, anyone who's curious can go to them, everyone knows Sega made it anyway.
@BlazeHedgehog Not throwing a hissy fit over the credits not being visible isn't being "ignorant", nor am I trying to pick anything. Pardon me for not feeling outraged about a nearly two-decade-old game losing the credits list in its only redistribution.
@BlazeHedgehog Fair, I suppose, but you could have done a third window for the PC version, or at least not mention the PC version in the description. I owned the PC version and the Gems Collection, and the Gems version is identical to what I remember on the PC (good quality opening movie, no water effect). I won't argue against your audio criticism though, since that isn't something I'd notice either way.
Sonic Jam really should've sped it up until the part where he through the rock at Eggbotnik. Everything after that in the other versions seems good, while Jam just sorta rushes through it.
The Sonic Gems version is actually a port of the PC version but it's labelled in game as the SCD version which is dumb. Same also for Sonic R, PC port was labelled as the Saturn version despite looking waaaay different.
@localhbci Especially considering they did a remarkably poor job of resampling the framerate to make it stretch for time, so you end up with this wonderful high-res animation that's running at like, lower than half speed, probably.
@localhbci It's a disgrace that you jump to ridiculous, non-compatible conclusions.
It has no staff roll during the animation, but both ports have the staff credits afterward. and even if they didn't it would be no different then network television squishing the credits into an unreadable sped up state in the corner while they fill the screen with ads for the next show, which has been a practice that has long predated internet piracy.
@BasiliskEye84 Ok, on the first point, I would be willing to concede as I'm not as familiar with Gems. However, on the second point, I agree 100%, and I detest it being done there as well. I do detest it when pirates do it because they only compound the issue.
You make it sound like it was an intentional and malicious omission.
I think it's more likely that SEGA is fucking retarded, especially when it comes to ports, and just slapped the clip from Sonic Jam onto Sonic Gems Collection without really realizing what they had done.
@localhbci Well, actually, I don't think the PC version had it either and also, the Gems Collection version is based off of the PC version (as is the included version of Sonic R).
At least the Gems collection allowed people to actually play the game. Not everyone has a sega cd and the game may never show up on virtual console so we should be happy it's available at all despite any graphical differences. As long as the gameplay is the same, that's what's really important.
@SantuXD6 No, that version was used to show how much of a difference there is between the PC and Sonic Gems Collection version ending scenes, since Sonic Jam considerably sped up the video.
@BlazeHedgehog You don't understand. In the original PC/CD version, there is a flash that appears before Sonic actually and succesfully warps to the Past or Future of the levels. In the GEMS COLLECTION version, that flash doesn't happen.
Wow, this is the first time I've heard the American music for Sonic CD, and I have to say I'm appalled. Why in the world they stuck with it with the Gems release when it would have been such an easy fix seems beyond logic.
The Sonic Gems version has none of the nasty slow down that the original game had, and is worth having for that alone. The funny thing is that the Gems version was taken from the PC version, and it's really good, when the actual PC version was a complete mess.
There's only one way to play this game: in it's original Version on mega cd,european Version with the original japanese score.one of the best games of all time.
I remember that the Sonic CD ending is available in Sonic Mega Collection for Game Cube, and it's faster just like it is in Sonic Jam. The difference is that it mixes the good and the bad ending a bit
I've only played Sonic CD on the Sega CD, which I still own both, and I'm glad to be able to see the animations from the game in a crisper smother form in the Collection. I always loved the animations they did in the original game but the upgrade in quality does it great justice. Thanks for vid upload!!!
the steam version is the best by far.

Here are some small graphical errors you might not have noticed in the Gems version:
1. On the title screen, Little Planet doesn't go up and down like it does in the original.
2. In the 5th special stage, the arches are missing
3. In Stardust Speedway BF, the lightning bolts are a permanent fixture.
There might be a few other errors I noticed but don't remember from the top of my head.

Man, they need to bring back the badass factor to Sonic again.
SoniClub 4 months ago
I forgot how much I hated the US soundtrack to Sonic CD. I must confess, however, that I did play the Sonic Boom CD that Sega gave us journalists back in the '90s. Blame that on my lack of musical exposure, heh.

definitely the easiest major 2-D sonic game.
sonic10158 4 months ago
Also, pretty sure that there was credits in Sonic Gems Collection for every game in the bundle, so credits after finishing the remade wasn't completely necessary.

@OniAmiTheResurected Didn't stop every other game BUT Sonic CD from still having them.

See, this is why normal people hate fans.
GoGojiraGo 5 months ago
@GoGojiraGo I am pretty sure everybody who's name was in the credits wouldn't be happy that some c-list developer did a sloppy job and completely removed any record of them having worked on the game. The other stuff doesn't make the game unplayable, but it still means it's not a very good version of Sonic CD. I guess when it's your only option you take what you can get, but contrary to what internet memes would have you believe, Bear Grylls doesn't drink his pee because it tastes good.
BlazeHedgehog 5 months ago
@BlazeHedgehog No idea what Bear Grylls has to do with Sonic, try to keep the discussion on topic, please. We lost the credits, whoopee, there's plenty of sites that list the people who made Sonic CD, anyone who's curious can go to them, everyone knows Sega made it anyway.
GoGojiraGo 5 months ago
@GoGojiraGo It seriously looks to me like you're being ignorant because you want to pick a fight - and really, what is that going to accomplish?
BlazeHedgehog 5 months ago
@BlazeHedgehog Not throwing a hissy fit over the credits not being visible isn't being "ignorant", nor am I trying to pick anything. Pardon me for not feeling outraged about a nearly two-decade-old game losing the credits list in its only redistribution.
GoGojiraGo 5 months ago
@GoGojiraGo Do I have the demeanor of somebody who is outraged to you? The only one raging about anything regarding this video seems to be you.
BlazeHedgehog 5 months ago
Wait, hold on. You said "Sega CD and PC," versus the Sonic Gems version. The Gems version IS A PORT OF THE PC VERSION. That's a fact >_<
The same is true with the Gems version of Sonic R...
shadowman22122 5 months ago
@shadowman22122 Not all ports are created equal.
BlazeHedgehog 5 months ago
@BlazeHedgehog Fair, I suppose, but you could have done a third window for the PC version, or at least not mention the PC version in the description. I owned the PC version and the Gems Collection, and the Gems version is identical to what I remember on the PC (good quality opening movie, no water effect). I won't argue against your audio criticism though, since that isn't something I'd notice either way.

Sonic Jam really should've sped it up until the part where he through the rock at Eggbotnik. Everything after that in the other versions seems good, while Jam just sorta rushes through it.
silversunset23 6 months ago
The Sonic Gems version is actually a port of the PC version but it's labelled in game as the SCD version which is dumb. Same also for Sonic R, PC port was labelled as the Saturn version despite looking waaaay different.

It's a disgrace that they removed the staff roll. No different than pirates who clip credits off of TV shows and movies.
localhbci 6 months ago
@localhbci Especially considering they did a remarkably poor job of resampling the framerate to make it stretch for time, so you end up with this wonderful high-res animation that's running at like, lower than half speed, probably.
BlazeHedgehog 6 months ago
@localhbci It's a disgrace that you jump to ridiculous, non-compatible conclusions.
It has no staff roll during the animation, but both ports have the staff credits afterward. and even if they didn't it would be no different then network television squishing the credits into an unreadable sped up state in the corner while they fill the screen with ads for the next show, which has been a practice that has long predated internet piracy.
BasiliskEye84 6 months ago
@BasiliskEye84 Ok, on the first point, I would be willing to concede as I'm not as familiar with Gems. However, on the second point, I agree 100%, and I detest it being done there as well. I do detest it when pirates do it because they only compound the issue.
localhbci 6 months ago
@localhbci
You make it sound like it was an intentional and malicious omission.
I think it's more likely that SEGA is fucking retarded, especially when it comes to ports, and just slapped the clip from Sonic Jam onto Sonic Gems Collection without really realizing what they had done.
321cheeseman 6 months ago
@localhbci Well, actually, I don't think the PC version had it either and also, the Gems Collection version is based off of the PC version (as is the included version of Sonic R).
michaelthemovieman 5 months ago
At least the Gems collection allowed people to actually play the game. Not everyone has a sega cd and the game may never show up on virtual console so we should be happy it's available at all despite any graphical differences. As long as the gameplay is the same, that's what's really important.
bartsimpson83 6 months ago
So basically, Sonic Jam's version is better, right?
SantuXD6 6 months ago
@SantuXD6 No, that version was used to show how much of a difference there is between the PC and Sonic Gems Collection version ending scenes, since Sonic Jam considerably sped up the video.

Can you do this again, please? This time in a difference using the Time Warps (whether to Past or Future).
xHEDGEHOGMAN1x 9 months ago
@xHEDGEHOGMAN1x Why? All the information you need is provided in this video.
BlazeHedgehog 9 months ago
@BlazeHedgehog You don't understand. In the original PC/CD version, there is a flash that appears before Sonic actually and succesfully warps to the Past or Future of the levels. In the GEMS COLLECTION version, that flash doesn't happen.
xHEDGEHOGMAN1x 9 months ago
@BlazeHedgehog can u get the gems fmv quality for the pc version any which way

sonic looks more badass in the original
Callofgun 9 months ago
Wow, this is the first time I've heard the American music for Sonic CD, and I have to say I'm appalled. Why in the world they stuck with it with the Gems release when it would have been such an easy fix seems beyond logic.
CESkootchy 10 months ago
it doesnt even look like sonic is underwater in gems
masterchronic3 10 months ago
The Sonic Gems version has none of the nasty slow down that the original game had, and is worth having for that alone. The funny thing is that the Gems version was taken from the PC version, and it's really good, when the actual PC version was a complete mess.

I remember that the Sonic CD ending is available in Sonic Mega Collection for Game Cube, and it's faster just like it is in Sonic Jam. The difference is that it mixes the good and the bad ending a bit
GsukiMKFan 1 year ago
I've only played Sonic CD on the Sega CD, which I still own both, and I'm glad to be able to see the animations from the game in a crisper smother form in the Collection. I always loved the animations they did in the original game but the upgrade in quality does it great justice. Thanks for vid upload!!!
hondragrid 1 year ago
That sonic boom song annoyed me after a few seconds. They sound so bored singing it.
But I dig the animation, with its fluidity, great Sonic moves and camera angles. A game like that would do wonders for the character.
cormano64 1 year ago
In Sonic Mega Collection for Gamecube, it uses the Sonic Jam Sonic CD ending speed.
