The fall of 79 best I remember I was fourth in line that day, all of us setting in our idling trains waiting for this banner to be set up. I remember Garrett and Yadon couldn't believe they were not called to be first through the banner and the guy that was called a good friend of mine brought this Youtube film to my attention. What a trip down memory lane the late seventies and early eighties, running in dark territory at first, the Burlington Northern soon got CTC up and running.
Train orders of course, delivered by Hoop and typed out on onion paper, delivered by a very young female holding a 12 ft. long pole to reach the engineer from the ground in front of the operator shack at Reno.
It's great to get to see old school BN. This line has proven to be a wise investment. Man if you could only still see those green & white SD40-2's as prominently now as then.
And is it just me but does the opening tune on this segment not sound a little similar to "When You're In" by Pink Floyd? I've heard that same piece or music in a documentary about B-52 bombers and that too was a documentary made in the 70's.
I saw a documentary made in the late 70's by the company I work for and it used the same song and a few others that are in this film. Ironically enough, it was about the building of SWEPCO's first coal fired power plant that was to be supplied from the Powder River Basin.
Gotta wonder if these guys ever see a concrete tie machine,and think where was that at in the 70`s,neat history video. Reno Junction see`s alota trains today!
BN = BNSF.

Did they have you using track warrants or train orders until the CTC was put it?

It looks like some of the Coal Gondolas with Rotary Couplers were built by FMC.
