I bet whoever called this elevator music would give anything to have their music played on an elevator or anywhere else for that matter! Anytime you post a derogatory remark about some music please post up an example of your music accomplishments as well so that they may be judged in accordance. It's simply the professional thing to do, don't you think?
Today's youth seem to think that anything that sounds like it might spring from a tiny bit of education is "elevator music" and thus they call Kanye West "a musician", say "Jay Z wrote a song for his daughter" when he is merely "talking" and say you are "jamming" when you play a record player. Sorry, this is NOT "elevator music" and the sensibility of today's youth is something more than "dumbed down".
@jessthehorse You do realise that you're just as bad? You're a closed-minded idiot. Because you listen to "jazz" hip hop holds no talent?
I listen to jazz, and play jazz, but I also like hip hop. Jay-z is on top of his game and really good at what he does.
Please, speak highly of Larry Carlton,a s he deserves, but there's no need to comment negatively on things you clearly have no idea about. There are other types of music out there, you not liking it does no decimate it's appeal to others.
@xTommyxGuitar - there is no invisible suit. The Emperor is butt naked! Do not ask me to consider stealing other people's sampled sounds and blathering on top of them an art form. It is not, no matter how much money it generates. It is still garbage now run along.
I don´t understand how people still keep labeling jazz fusion as "Elevator Music" what the hell people! grow up! do you thing you can change something by saying that? why don´t you (plural) go and pursue a career like miles davis, pat metheny, tommy emmanuel, paco de lucia and after you become succesful then speak (you probably wouldn´t care about talking shit by the time you accomplish that )(notice that i´m going beyond the "elevator music" topic for a reason).
@insaneguitarfreak and please notice that we don´t actually care about those stupid narrow-minded snobbishly intellectual classically jazzy oriented comments. Music is a celebration, that´s what´s it all about. In my humble opinion, Facundo from Argentina.
Larry's a seasoned veteran; a "heavy" in the session world; and obviously still has thoughtful, tasty and inventive chops. He's due a lot of respect whether one likes or dislikes the genre. I was a young kid just trying to learn how to play when I first heard this and it was obvious this guy was a baddass player. Although the style isn't my cup of tea any more I still respect and admire Larry--after all, he's still out there doin' it, and he still sounds great. Thanks for the post.
I know this statement is a bit redundant, but seriously, playing Room 335 on a strat seems a tad sacrilegious. Obviously it takes nothing away from Larry's playing, a true 70's fusion player.
Thanks for the video! I saw Larry Carlton at a music store in San Jose, Ca., in the 80's, where he gave an interview/clinic for 50 lucky guitar players, and Terry Trotter was on a Fender Rhodes keyboard. Larry talked about how Terry T. gave him some great jazz ideas over the years. It was an awesome experience, and Larry Carlton is on my very short list of favorite guitar players of all times. I'm a jazz guitar player and studied jazz and classical guitar at the University of North Texas.
Larry is not playing a strat in this video....a much sweeter brand of guitar like a Sadowsky..hand made from New York.....Walter Becker has a signature guitar from this manufacture...a very sweet sounding axe if you can afford one....
From what I understand Larry used Peg from Steely Dans album Asia to base this song and where he didn't end up playing the lead on the album, at that time he was more than just a guitar player for them. He was more like a liaison between Fagen and Becker and the rest of the musicians through The Royal Scam, Asia, and Gaucho albums. All three are great pieces of work.
@vinnycriss I find that funny as well. I think that larry is just such a good guitarist that he can pull awesome licks like that out of another song and use it i one of his own. I mean thats constantly done in music but the wy he does is pretty cool
Incidentally..this is plain beautiful. I 1st heard Larry when he soloed on Bobby Blands LP "Dreamer"..must've been 1972(?) From that time his way of soloing was etched in my head.
Seems like he uses a fairly high action from this Strat.
Two things: I was in my 20's also when I first heard Larry, and as 'ragsandbones1' was saying, Larry's playing was and is distinguished from many of his comptemporaries by his lyricism, clarity, tone and inspiration. It's so good to hear him in this video. One small correction to the note by 'MrClaptonStrat' - the 335 is a semi-hollow body. I have a 345 and it has a solid piece of wood going down the center of the body.
@buzzwashere1 Absolutely. I think LC comes from that special era of TIMELESS session men who were found on everyones records...from Billy Joel to Paul Simon to Streisand.
Back then it LC, Eric Gale, Cornell Dupree...perhaps Dennis Budimir & Lee Rit also They were ubiquitous!
Also, the main 3 are INSTANTLY recognisable.
All came from a Blues base, which today cannot be replicated because alot of music today lacks that intense feel and connection to Blues.
It's easy to judge this music as 'elevator music' looking through today's window. When it was written it was right in the pocket of what was 'happening'. Let's not ignore the context, friends. Furthermore, the style, as far as I'm concerned., is secondary to the sweet melodic sensibility missing in most of the 'fusion' guitarists of that time and the absolute clarity with which each note is given it's due. In my 20's I bought a transcription and learned the solo note for note. Thanks Matt.
@RAGSANDBONES1 IMHO Todays music is really elevator music.
I just tagged on to the latest music scene and NOTHING sounded good.
Everything sounds clinically processed and false..autotune rules! Back 30 plus yrs ago you could pick up any LP and there would be something of musical value on it...even crap bubblegum or disco.(LOL). Music has strayed from its Blues roots.
@RAGSANDBONES1 ..hell, if this music was played in elevators i would always go to the top floor. and when my plane had landed i would always stay seated until the music ends. this tune is a timeless classic and it's great fun watching him enjoying so much what he's doing..

It certainly does. "Peg" is not Larry, but Peg is such a great groove I wouldn't be surprised if he lifted it. It's almost ridiculous - especially the bridges....
@EddieRamon It sounds like peg because larry wrote to donald fagan of steely dan and asked him for permission to use the rhythm and keyboard sound for one of his songs

@khiley9 Nope. Jay Gordon did the solo on "Peg", (Larry did "Kid Charlemange"). And it's not the same chords per se, but it's a similar approach to a 12 bar blues, just with the same altered chords the 'Dan used. Still savage though.
Normally I hear this song played on this ES-335 but the Strat sounds fantastic too..It reminds me of how much tone there is in the fingers of the player...
Larry has such a fluid style. It's like when you see those smooth dancers from waaaaay back in the day sliding their feet across the floor and boucing around with grace and skill, that's what his fingers remind me of. Too cool!
I found an old starlicks video of larry from 1986, before he gives a lesson on it at the beginning there is a track he plays at the baked potato in hollywood, its a punt here but would anyone know what its called as cannot find that track on here, its really good and if anyone has that video !! let us know please.
@kbyrne48, are you sure that's J.R.? it doesn't look like him....I know Jeff Porcaro was on the studio version. It's definitely not Jeff, but it doesn't look like John Robinson either...
@ 3:26 the bass player is right there with him! Larry is truely INCREDIBLE!!!

I don't think Becker/Fagan minded.
As you may know, LC played some of his finest solos on Steely Dan records and they always loved his playing.
Also, B & F cleverly stole alot of intros/licks from Jazz artists like Horace Silver & Charlie Parker.
Consider "Rikki Don't Lose..." taken from Silvers' "Song For My Father".
What goes around..etc etc...

Larry wrote Room 335...not Steely Dan...what you are hearing are the first two chords that are from song Peg but in a different key.

Larry has such a fluid style. It's like when you see those smooth dancers from waaaaay back in the day sliding their feet across the floor and boucing around with grace and skill, that's what his fingers remind me of. Too cool!

@kbyrne48, are you sure that's J.R.? it doesn't look like him....I know Jeff Porcaro was on the studio version. It's definitely not Jeff, but it doesn't look like John Robinson either...
