  • @ 3:26 the bass player is right there with him! Larry is truely INCREDIBLE!!!

  • I bet whoever called this elevator music would give anything to have their music played on an elevator or anywhere else for that matter! Anytime you post a derogatory remark about some music please post up an example of your music accomplishments as well so that they may be judged in accordance. It's simply the professional thing to do, don't you think?

  • Is that Dave Carpenter on bass? Elevetor or not - i don't care - it's a hell of a catchy tune!

  • Today's youth seem to think that anything that sounds like it might spring from a tiny bit of education is "elevator music" and thus they call Kanye West "a musician", say "Jay Z wrote a song for his daughter" when he is merely "talking" and say you are "jamming" when you play a record player. Sorry, this is NOT "elevator music" and the sensibility of today's youth is something more than "dumbed down".

  • @jessthehorse You do realise that you're just as bad? You're a closed-minded idiot. Because you listen to "jazz" hip hop holds no talent?

I listen to jazz, and play jazz, but I also like hip hop. Jay-z is on top of his game and really good at what he does.

Please, speak highly of Larry Carlton,a s he deserves, but there's no need to comment negatively on things you clearly have no idea about. There are other types of music out there, you not liking it does no decimate it's appeal to others.

  • @xTommyxGuitar - there is no invisible suit. The Emperor is butt naked! Do not ask me to consider stealing other people's sampled sounds and blathering on top of them an art form. It is not, no matter how much money it generates. It is still garbage now run along.

  • Should this be called: Room Strat?

  • @g1asseye Room 335 was his Studio, ironic that it's also the guitar he's famous for using...

  • @jamminjeff8566 Indeed! Well whichever guitar he's using, I can't seem to find a fault in his playing. He's a true master!

  • @jamminjeff8566 I agree, he's my favorite. So versatile and like Robben Ford, knows exactly the right note to play at any given time.

  • First tune that got me into jazz!

  • I love this shit

  • Jesus this guy has speed!

  • Music is not relevant here!! LOOK AT THAT MULLET!!!!

  • Its so soothing to listen to but people have no fucking idea how complicated and difficult it actually is for the person behind the guitar.

  • This is Indeed a Magnum Opus. :)

  • nice, very nice :)

  • Truly a Master of the electric guitar - great rythym and feel.

    Nothing like this available today.

  • I don´t understand how people still keep labeling jazz fusion as "Elevator Music" what the hell people! grow up! do you thing you can change something by saying that? why don´t you (plural) go and pursue a career like miles davis, pat metheny, tommy emmanuel, paco de lucia and after you become succesful then speak (you probably wouldn´t care about talking shit by the time you accomplish that )(notice that i´m going beyond the "elevator music" topic for a reason).

  • @insaneguitarfreak and please notice that we don´t actually care about those stupid narrow-minded snobbishly intellectual classically jazzy oriented comments. Music is a celebration, that´s what´s it all about. In my humble opinion, Facundo from Argentina.

  • Larry's a seasoned veteran; a "heavy" in the session world; and obviously still has thoughtful, tasty and inventive chops. He's due a lot of respect whether one likes or dislikes the genre. I was a young kid just trying to learn how to play when I first heard this and it was obvious this guy was a baddass player. Although the style isn't my cup of tea any more I still respect and admire Larry--after all, he's still out there doin' it, and he still sounds great. Thanks for the post.

  • modern jazz sucks, and yes this is elevator music for a very good reason.

  • i like the start version vs. the gibsons.

  • I know this statement is a bit redundant, but seriously, playing Room 335 on a strat seems a tad sacrilegious. Obviously it takes nothing away from Larry's playing, a true 70's fusion player.

  • I've owned a few Strats,(custom shop) , but a 335 or Les Pual, are Superior.

His tone on this is ok, but....an Ibanez would have been better, if he chose to "stray" from Gibson

  • Thanks for the video! I saw Larry Carlton at a music store in San Jose, Ca., in the 80's, where he gave an interview/clinic for 50 lucky guitar players, and Terry Trotter was on a Fender Rhodes keyboard. Larry talked about how Terry T. gave him some great jazz ideas over the years. It was an awesome experience, and Larry Carlton is on my very short list of favorite guitar players of all times. I'm a jazz guitar player and studied jazz and classical guitar at the University of North Texas.

  • GO Ahead Larry...I'm a A / A and I love your music....

  • if i want more music like this, where do i turn?

    I already own Aja

  • Larry is not playing a strat in this video....a much sweeter brand of guitar like a Sadowsky..hand made from New York.....Walter Becker has a signature guitar from this manufacture...a very sweet sounding axe if you can afford one....

  • @TheFudd57 Are you sure it's a Sadowsky and not a Valley Arts ? They custom made guitars for him in the 80's.

  • From what I understand Larry used Peg from Steely Dans album Asia to base this song and where he didn't end up playing the lead on the album, at that time he was more than just a guitar player for them. He was more like a liaison between Fagen and Becker and the rest of the musicians through The Royal Scam, Asia, and Gaucho albums. All three are great pieces of work.

  • this is musica

  • @vinnycriss I find that funny as well. I think that larry is just such a good guitarist that he can pull awesome licks like that out of another song and use it i one of his own. I mean thats constantly done in music but the wy he does is pretty cool

  • it is peg by steely dan ha ha i just was aout to post that

  • @masongensman Which is funny as it wasn't even Larry that did the lick on Peg.

  • Peg by Steely Dan in 1977 it's just the chord progression.

  • Incidentally..this is plain beautiful. I 1st heard Larry when he soloed on Bobby Blands LP "Dreamer"..must've been 1972(?) From that time his way of soloing was etched in my head.

Seems like he uses a fairly high action from this Strat.

  • I seen your pic shot!

Your name in lights above it!

  • sounds like gran tourismo menu music... but absolutely MINT

  • To danlovesnan, he still is in porn, just ask your mom!

  • looks like he has to take a big shit :D

  • So this is what T-bag did before he got to prison with scofield and burrows.

  • Thumbs up if you heard this on the weather channel.

  • I'm going to see him tomorrow in Hengelo, Netherlands... awesome !

  • Great show in Matosinhos jazz Festival (PORTUGAL) yesterday.

  • mys__/bonnardsbluesband

  • He has played with Steely Dan

  • He has played with Steely Dan

  • he is dressed like a stupid porn actor. why is that? he looks like an idiot. But for that, nice playing!

  • Where is this Music now?

  • perfect song!!!

  • wow.... tocco stellare....

  • Larry's play is awesome here and I'd be willing to SMACK THE FUCKING SHIT OUTTA ANYONE WHO SAYS DIFFERENT :@

  • @EffayHue wow :D

  • He looks sort of like George Carlin.

  • I'm 60 years old and mr.carlton can play he's music for me anytime ...anywhere...

  • Two things: I was in my 20's also when I first heard Larry, and as 'ragsandbones1' was saying, Larry's playing was and is distinguished from many of his comptemporaries by his lyricism, clarity, tone and inspiration. It's so good to hear him in this video. One small correction to the note by 'MrClaptonStrat' - the 335 is a semi-hollow body. I have a 345 and it has a solid piece of wood going down the center of the body.

  • @buzzwashere1 Absolutely. I think LC comes from that special era of TIMELESS session men who were found on everyones records...from Billy Joel to Paul Simon to Streisand.

Back then it LC, Eric Gale, Cornell Dupree...perhaps Dennis Budimir & Lee Rit also They were ubiquitous!

Also, the main 3 are INSTANTLY recognisable.

All came from a Blues base, which today cannot be replicated because alot of music today lacks that intense feel and connection to Blues.

  • It's easy to judge this music as 'elevator music' looking through today's window. When it was written it was right in the pocket of what was 'happening'. Let's not ignore the context, friends. Furthermore, the style, as far as I'm concerned., is secondary to the sweet melodic sensibility missing in most of the 'fusion' guitarists of that time and the absolute clarity with which each note is given it's due. In my 20's I bought a transcription and learned the solo note for note. Thanks Matt.

  • @RAGSANDBONES1 IMHO Todays music is really elevator music.

I just tagged on to the latest music scene and NOTHING sounded good.

Everything sounds clinically processed and false..autotune rules! Back 30 plus yrs ago you could pick up any LP and there would be something of musical value on it...even crap bubblegum or disco.(LOL). Music has strayed from its Blues roots.

  • @RAGSANDBONES1 ..hell, if this music was played in elevators i would always go to the top floor. and when my plane had landed i would always stay seated until the music ends. this tune is a timeless classic and it's great fun watching him enjoying so much what he's doing..

  • @RAGSANDBONES1

If that would be elevator music all people would go crazy and explode in elevators. :D

Nah, great music. And this kind of melodic awareness is way more than lazy jazz in elevators.

  • Dave Carpenter on Bass (RIP), John Ferarro on Drums, Matt Rollings on keyboards. Tokyo Blue Note.......... maybe 1991?

  • can u say MULLET?

  • nachito, what do you mean.? I'm not bein' a douch, just askin'.

  • @AnjerHalen The Srat is a Solidboy! The 335 is a hollowbody! And the song is named after the guitar! :)

  • I remember when he was shot through the neck with a .357 magnum.

    Larry's blessed two ways!

  • Fabulous musician...but I wonder what what Fagen/Becker has to say?

  • @Hydrefyricon

    I don't think Becker/Fagan minded.

As you may know, LC played some of his finest solos on Steely Dan records and they always loved his playing.

Also, B & F cleverly stole alot of intros/licks from Jazz artists like Horace Silver & Charlie Parker.

Consider "Rikki Don't Lose..." taken from Silvers' "Song For My Father".

    What goes around..etc etc...

  • It should sound like Steely Dan. He was a big part of the band.

  • Souless and boring . . .

Used to like hm, but this is just dull.

  • please tell me where the nearest elevator playing music with licks like 3:19-3:22 so i can tip the elevator man.

  • is Billy Sheehan on bass?

  • coooooooooooooooool

  • Room 335 was named after a studio he played in. It has nothing to do with his fave guitar. That was just a coincidence...

  • The studio was named after the guitar.

  • good grief is this guy good. been working on the biceps too!

  • most post rap era listeners dont understand or appreciate real music played on real instruments by real musicians please keep the music alive larry carlton and all artist who dont sellout to sampling beatboxes and nonsense lyrics

  • @monteallensr1

sampling is what happens when true creativity escapes you.

  • Turn up the record volume a bit more next time.

  • oh man, this is a gran clasico, son grandes clasicos 80s rules jejej, best musicos ever

  • 335........on a strat...That is funny !

  • LOVE IT! 15 and I say that this is true music. Something that gives you feelin!

  • Beeindruckend!

  • yeah... good guitarist. what a boring ass song though. i feel like i'm in a elevator going slow as hell or waiting in line somewhere. someday i will learn to bring this feeling to people with my music!!!!

  • @hozilla420

It's call MUSIC dumbass! who cares if it's played in an elevator or not! I mean, wtf is all this "elevator" shit anyway? :@

  • awesome! better than 30 years ago.

  • what a great guitarist!

  • Nobody finds it just a little bit ironic that he's playing "Room 335" on a Strat? Dunno just sayin'

  • @nachito007 lil disapointed that he's playin a strat and not a hollow body!!!

  • @nachito007 lil disappointed that he's playin a strat and not a hollow body!!!

  • @nachito007 I'm gonna sound completely stupid here, but why?

  • @MrClaptonstrat Because the song room 335 is named after his Gibson 335 which is a hollowbody, and the Strat is a solidbody!

  • @nachito007

Yeah seeing as his red dot neck was his goto guitar for so long. Ain't this his Valley Arts strat?

  • @nachito007 and it's just amazing

  • @nachito007 ....LOL

  • @nachito007 xactly my thought dude. prefer the gibson every time.

  • @nachito007

Larry can play any guitar, the song was written on a 335 if I remember correctly. He is amazing!

  • @nachito007

if we fought i'd kick your ass :-)

  • @nachito007 was thinkin the same thing

  • Anyone have any idea how Larry gets his sound here - pedals etc?

  • Is the bassist Dave Carpenter?

  • :43 looks like the dude from entourage

  • I assume the 25 dislikes are deaf people that are just disappointed they can't hear the greatness?

  • J'adhèreeeeee ,Kissss de New-Caledonia

  • Originaire de TOKANOD "NEW-CALEDONIA ;;;;;;; J'adhèreeeeeee

  • can anyone find me this:

Larry Carlton & Michel Colombier - The Search

    Thanks alot.

  • Is he sweep picking the intro? Or are his finger-moves just incredibly subtle?

  • Wow, this guy is really good. The music is kinda corny, but the guitar is smooth. haha

  • It certainly does. "Peg" is not Larry, but Peg is such a great groove I wouldn't be surprised if he lifted it. It's almost ridiculous - especially the bridges....

  • It certainly does. "Peg" is not Larry, but it's such a grovve I wouldn't be surprised if he lifted it.

  • Jimmy Johnson on bass.

  • What a great tone and feel, amusing performance as well (everyone can look a bit silly when they're really into it hahaha) just great.

  • This dudes got a giant head

  • Looks like David Carradine...

  • Cool. Looks like my buddy John Ferraro on drums.

  • @gtrdave Yes, I believe you are correct.

  • good

  • is this Jazz?

  • @coal1987 daaaaaaa

  • @coal1987 -it's jazz-pop-fusion

  • @coal1987 What elese would you call it?

  • before the actual tune starts, that's some of the smoothest playin i've ever heard especially considering the time it was recorded

  • so cool you are a king so amazing so easily !!! wow

  • kinda sounds like peg by steely dan.

  • @EddieRamon It sounds like peg because larry wrote to donald fagan of steely dan and asked him for permission to use the rhythm and keyboard sound for one of his songs

  • @EddieRamon Larry didn't play the solo on that one Jay Graydon did. However Larry was all over Aja and Royal Scam albums. His sound defines those early albums.

  • @EddieRamon that's right

  • @EddieRamon thats where they got it from :P

  • @EddieRamon He had to get permission from SD for this.

  • @EddieRamon so true!

  • let's get some relevant music happening larry.

    jazzy disco is kinda dead.

  • @54taqiyya This isn't actually recent. And good playing is good playing. Miles, Coltrane, Parker are stil relevent today. Ask a pro who they've listened to.

  • @SamHilland no doubt, my friend. it was just a comment on this tune. everyone has their, not so good tunes and i happened to be in a mood. larry rocks. no offence was meant to him as a musician at all.

  • @54taqiyya It's not like this was recorded yesterday.

  • awesomenessness

  • Come on larry..Shave off the hair.

  • I hear Steely Dan's "Peg" a lot in this. Which is cool. Also, Larry Carlton is God.

  • Comment removed

  • @khiley9 Nope. Jay Gordon did the solo on "Peg", (Larry did "Kid Charlemange"). And it's not the same chords per se, but it's a similar approach to a 12 bar blues, just with the same altered chords the 'Dan used. Still savage though.

  • Awsome++ I'll love to learn it from him"

  • COME ON !!! YOU COMPLAIN ABOUT HIS HAIR??.. havent you seen like,.. well almost any other popular guitarists hair???

  • Sounds like Steely Dan along with other great things. Sweet.

  • Normally I hear this song played on this ES-335 but the Strat sounds fantastic too..It reminds me of how much tone there is in the fingers of the player...

  • I got your picture...

  • you see where Steve Lukather got some of his jazz ideas

  • This new song is so AWESOME! Just go to cdbaby.com and type in dan andrade! Its really cool!!

  • Larry wrote Room 335...not Steely Dan...what you are hearing are the first two chords that are from song Peg but in a different key.

  • Larry has such a fluid style. It's like when you see those smooth dancers from waaaaay back in the day sliding their feet across the floor and boucing around with grace and skill, that's what his fingers remind me of. Too cool!

  • Superb guitarist !!

  • sin duda el mejor !

  • EL MEJOR VIOLERO

  • EL MEJOR VIOLERO CUAL ES ?

  • The Auld Guys.....always reliable and proffessional, wee bit like ma'sel

  • Larry's strat slingin, mullet sportin days. Hell yeah!

  • fuckin ah. rock on Larry

  • This man knows how to play.... I love his music. His hair is not important, lol.

  • This man knows how to play.... I love his music.

  • sounds a lot like peg

  • @jlevinson100 i was thinkin the saaaaame exact thing

  • @jlevinson100 i was thinkin the saaaaame exact thing lol

Got love the hair but he is mr tastful guitar man

  • @ledzeppeliner :) its ok I just found it ...doh...dont give it up :)

  • @ledzeppeliner I think it's called 'Don't give it up'.

  • @kbyrne48, are you sure that's J.R.? it doesn't look like him....I know Jeff Porcaro was on the studio version. It's definitely not Jeff, but it doesn't look like John Robinson either...

  • I heard a bit of eric johnson here.. great..

  • Awesome disply of guitar work here, simply brilliant!!

  • The drummer is John Robinson.

  • @kbyrne48 the drummer is "John Ferraro", he played on the "strikes Twice " album.

  • GREAT

  • mtooo bommm

  • The incredible Larry Carlton. Met him in Houston many years ago after a gig, and he was the nicest person you could imagine...
