I performed PP&M version of 'When the Ship Comes In' for our Senior Show in 1966. Had a new Martin D-18 - but the strap broke right at the start of the song - finished the song by clamping the guitar under my arm - got a standing ovation - one of best moments of my life - saw them live once at UC Berkeley. LOVED PP&M then, still do. Thank you Paul, thank you Peter and thank you Mary for so much musical happiness you've given the world.
@ibnelson Walking down the street in Chapel Hill, NC, where I was a student, I saw a car coming and a girl waved at me. I didn't realize in full then, but then did when I went to the concert that evening. It was Peter, Paul and Mary. We all loved them. I later saw/heard them in DC where they sang during the historic March on Washington in 1963, and later in 1964. I liked them mainly b/c they sang Dylan songs and made his raw songs more palatable to the general public. Dylan versions the best
@ibnelson During an "amateur night" in 1965 or '66 at a coffeehouse called "The Exit" in Gaslight Square, an entertainment district in St. Louis, I led off a set of four songs with this one. I was using a flat pick, and it BROKE right at the beginning of the 2nd verse! Without missing a beat, I finished the song strumming by hand. The audience was appreciative, and more people came in to the place than left during my set, but after that, I hardly ever used a flat pick again...
I like this version, but it's so much more upbeat than Dylan's. Not a bad thing, but I like that Dylan actually sounds kind of pissed off and like he really, really means it that whoever he's talking to will get what they deserve.
I hear this song, and I think about the Tea Party successes we're about to have in November, and it gives me goosebumps. You Obama-Goliaths are about to be conquered.
@Tsugaheterophylla - Thank you. I always wondered about this. I know Mary had two beautiful daughters as do my husband and I. Sure do miss her, but at least we now have videos as well as recordings and I roll them out whenever I need a break from this weary, woe-filled world. Rest well, Mary. THANK YOU for all of it. Peace & Love, Bread & Justice.
this song has energy and hope.

Yeah, this and "Wasn't That A Time?" are my two favorite PP&M efforts...I had most of their albums in the '60s.

The Tea Party is a creation of the Koch Brothers, multi billionaires who this song is against.

Peter Paul and Mary would be so aghast to hear their songs inspire triumph in the minds of the tea party.

I hear this song and I think of the common people smashing the rich and powerful, like the people behind the tea party movement.

And they'll raise their hands sayin'
"We'll meet all your demands"
But we'll shout from the bow "Your days are numbered!"
And like Pharaoh's tribe they'll be drowned in the tide
And like Goliath they'll be conquered!
