I know you've said on other vids that 651's can, under the right conditions, can make a lot of money but it still seems more practical to use twin engine scrapers.
Which would you choose if you could choose only ONE.......single engine or twin engine????
You risk busting/cutting up tires when you try to self load them (in rock) it is a lot of wear and tear on your tires, The company i worked for pushed EVERY pan, often with 2 d10n's at the same time ..
@RDNKThrasher company i worked for if you fucked the tyres you got fined, thats why the button is on the back off the scraper to get pushed, you know the crack
Ah ok, just curious thanks though, I saw the D57T video pretty neat I gotta say. I got a video of a blast at a limestone quarry yesterday. First blast I ever saw and was lucky enough to have my camera with me.
Yes I know twin engine buggies load each other I was just curious as to why you use single engine scrapers that depend on a bulldozer to load. Whereas if you used twin engine scrapers the bulldozer could do other associated dirt work. And I was wondering if maybe your company chooses that method because your dealing with hard or rocky ground that requires the extra muscle of a dozer.
@bert26a Because a twin has two engines burning fuel all the time, and a single only has two engines burning fuel while loading (one in the scraper and one in the cat) which cuts down on your operating cost.
Of course if your haul is uphill on somewhere with a large amount of rolling resistance the singles won't have the power to haul themselves around loaded at enough rate of speed to make money. That would be a time when a twin is more benificial.
Do you guys use the push Cat method to load because of how hard the soil can be in Calgary? Or do you also use the Sureway method with the twin engine buggies? I live in Winnipeg and it's really touch and go using buggies, so most of our bigger dirt companies stick with D8's and pull scrapers, because the buggies quite often need to be pushed to be loaded and pushed through the dump to get them dumped.
@TurboGSR96 Ok first off JD doesn't make real scrapers so they dont count ;) The other is the only scraper Jd made is an ELEVATING SCRAPER similar to the Cat 613/623 which uses an elevator to load instead of forcing the dirt in. So no, single engine scrapers are not meant to self load (using force).
Great Video! We do this out here in Northern California. The ground is hard as hell and sometimes lava rock. But we use a few, 2 or 3, D11's to rip and 651's or 657's with 2 push cat d10n's per scraper. Also your push cat guy seems to be going WAY slow in reverse. Our guys had 2 d10n's behind every scraper that came into the cut. No stopping or waiting. Our dozers have spring loaded push blades and stingers also.
Awesome footage man. What kind of soil ya'll got up there?
@sbcwby21 We have third gear locked out on our cats, the equipment manager told us it's too hard on the UC and to keep them in second. Most of the material here is clay type with some areas of silt (like the one in the video). Pretty much everywhere you go if you dig down a few meters you hit sandstone to varying degrees of density. Some stuff is so hard it either needs to be blasted or chipped with a breaker!
thats some serious tonnage per hour! would a twin engined scraper still need the push cat? would a push pull combination be more effective? really like the videos - really informative and interesting
@stevendonovan1987 Twins push pulling are more effective in certan conditions. A twn is able to self load itself in 60 seconds, and two of them push pulling can load at 30 seconds each (loading time is cut in half).

@25mfd That depends on so many different things. Up or down hill haul, ground conditions, what sort of material you are moving, cut length etc etc.
vantagetes 2 months ago
@vantagetes Well, for this vid, looks like the 651's have the advantage.
Looks like pretty FLAT,DRY terrain.
I just watched your snake pit of doom vid and if there were 651's there, they would STILL be there......STUCK.
Very MUDDY.
657's have the advantage in the snake pit of doom.

@25mfd EXACTLY! Each one is better in certain situations.

Why do these machines have rippers
dozerman8114 8 months ago
@dozerman8114 1) counterweight for the blade to prevent uneven undercarriage wear 2) to rip hard material so the scrapers can load easier.

As a seasoned operator, I can tell you it's frustrating as hell to have 3rd gear locked out. Been there, done that. it sucks. Very cool video.
