Great vid! While VT-8 failed to getting any hits it was not for their lack of bravery or skill. At the onset of the war, American torpedoes had a fatal flaw that they failed to explode on impact. Though, VT-8 did draw the Zeros down leaving the carriers vulnerable to dive bomber attacks.
Ferrier was unable to return fire because the shot out hydraulics left the tail wheel drop in front of his gun. As a result olny one gear locked and it ground looped on landing at Midway (still a stellar performance by Earnest). Also this TBF was production plane #1 and was sent to Grumman for evaluation. It never flew again. Fereir later became an officer and retired a full commander. Earnest retired a captain. Both are still alive.
Read "A Dawn Like Thunder" the full story of VT-8.
@maxsmodels i just finished reading it,got to be the saddest book ever.im not so sure those two are alive now though.they were when the book was written though.
BTW, to all of the folks trying to correct the video, 3 TBFs launched ordinance, one dying plane broke off for the nearest target and took a potshot at the light cruiser Nagara before crashing. 2 others released at the carrier with no hits. Pilot Bert Earnest, with the body of Jay Manning in the turret and the unconscious and and wounded Harry Ferrier in the radio compartment, managed to limp his crippled plane back to Miday using only elevator trim and rudder. Ferrier woke up on the return.
I am trying to do a Midway Air Ops documentary. I have just ordered IL2 1946 to help. Hoe did you create a full sqaudron? Would you mind if I used a few clips from what you posted.
Your data is incorrect. None of the Avengers where able to drop their payloads. The only scored hits where from the Helldivers. Lieutenant Commander Warldron's team went down without scoring. My information comes directly from the book.
No one scored a hit as depicted in the vid. However, based on his own first hand account, Gay pulled the trigger to release his torpedo near the carrier. He released and then flew over the carrier. He either missed or it did not release. In this depiction, I'm going with missed. Only somebody standing on the carrier would know for sure. (he was close enough to see them jumping up and down in anger)
at some points during the beginning of the video I had to look very closely at the details to see that it was edited video game footage and not ACTUAL WW2 color video. Very good job, sir.
I am trying to do a youtube documentary on air operation at the B.O.M. I am using models since I have zero CGI skills. I sent a video response of some early test footage.
While I commend your initiative, the video is a bit misleading. VT-8 flew TBD Devastator torpedo bombers from the Hornet. While there was a contingent of VT-8 that flew TBFs, they flew from Midway itself and were not under the direct command of Waldron.
Yes, read my earlier comments on your commentary: "Don't forget: VT-8 launched 6 Avengers from Midway, of which only 1 returned. You may notice in the opening shots, that Avengers are coming in from Midway and Devastators w/o torpedos are taking off from carrier (IL2 does not have a torpedo load-out for Devastators!). However, It is correct to say that in the final shot George Gay was flying a Devastator, not an Avenger. Also, he was shot down by 5 zeros near the end!" - Kd5
The Avenger was supposed to really dominate this battle, as far as torpedo planes go. Instead they were just as much shot to hell as the others during all the confusion. A great book to read on this squadron is "A Dawn Like Thunder" amazing story of the men in VT-8 from Midway to Guadalcanal.
Good observation...but not exactly! Don't forget: VT-8 launched 6 Avengers from Midway, of which only 1 returned. Also, he was shot down by 5 zeros in a line at the final moments!
@katdog5 but devastators were the main torpedo planes of the USAAF while avengers the main dive bombers....as l can remember.....and on the 1st wave of the attack there were devastators which didnot return to the carrier......only a pilot........
OF COURSE I M NOT SURE...but the documentary "said" it clearly...
@MrSAS1997 Avengers weren't dive bombers, they were the replacement to the devastator as a torpedo plane, but avengers were moddable, so they could carry bombs as well.

well Iknow that it might be alile lat for that sugsetion bit why not use the vindicator hack of the b5n the next time.
I thing that would match the devestator a lot better and that way you would have a torpedo loafout to!
dond get me wrong your vid is great! just loud thinking

Nice video, wrong type of American torpedo planes. Torpedo squadron 8 did not fly Avengers.....they flew Devastators.
