Shouldnt have ejected untill the last few seconds i mean if he had time to eject and get his bearings to the point where he watched the plane hit the house then he had time try other things. If your not willing to lose your own life to save anothers you shouldnt be allowed to fly in the military.
oh btw. iv crashed a glider and realy badly hurt someone... it wasnt my fault i had landing gear failer... i landed gear buckled and stapped three seconds after landing was smooth aswel... the glider then fell onto its side tearing the wing off and then struck a van with a person between the glider and the van... its not funny and its no ones fault... but things go wrong... and people are in the wrong place wrong time :(

In short, four lives were lost. We don't know how many lives could have been lost had he landed in NAS North Island instead of MCAS Miramar. The whole ordeal was a tragedy, it should be left at that.

Save the plane, if that becomes impossible, direct the plane to crash in an area which appears to be least occupied by people, if/when that becomes impossible, eject to save yourself. More pilots cause civilian deaths due to accidents that were avoidable in Europe than probably any other place in the western world.
@SM3B You're somehow wrong. For DOD there is only the $ that counts. The pilots are instructed to save themselves and to let the falling plane in the hands of God... (if there is such thing). Why? Because a combat pilot costs the Government several millions... and it is very difficult to replace him/her. Uncle Sam just don't care about the "collateral damages" (read lost lives), and considers that it is quite easy to replace the metal (plane)... Because it is paid with the taxpayers money

In short, four lives were lost. We don't know how many lives could have been lost had he landed in NAS North Island instead of MCAS Miramar. The whole ordeal was a tragedy, it should be left at that.

@thecrashpit yes the military has its own justice system..... UCMJ.... i was arrested for braking the 3rd general order.... report all violations on post... my friend loaded his weapon without authority. i was suppose to report him and i forgot...

@thecrashpit Well the man said they disciplined 13 members of the Marines and Navy, didn't mention Lt Neubauer in that number. He was grounded, however, and asked why he didn't disobey the orders he was given to land at MCAS Miramar instead of NAS North Island where the operators from the USS Abraham Lincoln and the civil ATC had suggested. The decisions were made for him by his superiors. He'd have to disobey direct orders to land in a base better equipped for emergencies.
He's flying today.

@ColonelVile i worry about just that because i live directly under the flight path of one of the local airports runways. every once and a while i look out of my window on the third floor of my apartment building and see landing lights headed right towards me. its a good thing non of those delta crj-200's havent crashed yet.

No Offense but Americans are a bit inconsiderate. Other Countries pilots are able to ask their planes nicely to steer away from residential areas and sacrifice themselves. For example: The red arrows pilot who died just recently. He asked to not crash into the residential area and the plane agreed and decided to crash into the sea instead, killing both. :/ Sorry but Americans do seem to be inconsiderate :/

Look up the top airshow casulties and you'll find you are baseless in your statement. like the Ukrainian pilots in the Sukhoi SU-27 in Lviv that killed 77 and injured 543 in 2002. They were attempting a move that they did not sufficient altitude for and skimmed through a crowd of people. Or the crash in 88 at Ramstein where the italian Tricolori team killed 67 and injured another 346.

@Mythik88 I'm a pilot and EVERY nation has essentially the same protocol when an aircraft is crippled. Save the plane, if that becomes impossible, direct the plane to crash in an area which appears to be least occupied by people, if/when that becomes impossible, eject to save yourself. More pilots cause civilian deaths due to accidents that were avoidable in Europe than probably any other place in the western world.

@SM3B You're somehow wrong. For DOD there is only the $ that counts. The pilots are instructed to save themselves and to let the falling plane in the hands of God... (if there is such thing). Why? Because a combat pilot costs the Government several millions... and it is very difficult to replace him/her. Uncle Sam just don't care about the "collateral damages" (read lost lives), and considers that it is quite easy to replace the metal (plane)... Because it is paid with the taxpayers money

@SM3B stfu some times a pilot CANT steer his/her plane away. many factors are in place when a plane is crashing, Most of the time the pilot looses control of the plane thus is the reason it crashes. Any pilot with half a brain from any country would try and steer it away from houses if they could its comon sense. But im sure with your keyboard commando skills you know all about advanced jet avionics and physics and how to control multi million dollar jets. Have fun

With complete thrust loss, an F/A-18 at low speed and altitude doesn't have much option to go anywhere. If he had flown it all the way into the ground, there still would likely have been casualties.
