There's a competition to name the first two boring machines for the Crossrail tunnels and they've now shortlisted ten pairs of names - one of them is Bobbie and Phyllis!
Sally Thomsett was cast as the 11-year old Phyllis, despite being 20 years old at the time. Her contract forbade her to reveal her true age during the making of the film and she was also not allowed to be seen smoking or drinking during the shoot! The youngest railway child was the oldest child star! :D
There's a rather nice vocal version of this them sung by Vince Hill. It's called, 'More than Ever Now'. I think it and the theme music was written by Johnny Pearson.
am i right in thinking that the kids that got sent to north england from london during world war 2 in the blitz were generally called the railway children anyway? i vaugley remember reading about them in history at school - accept the reality was somewhat different i rememeber! alot of kids were very poor uneducated and had poor health - id rather see their story - not some of the poor hard done by rich london kids who had feckin servants!!!
I love this film so much; I can still remember going to see it in the Christmas holidays when I was twelve; I was absolutely captivated. Thanks so much for uploading this enchanting classic.
As much as a young lad could be in love with a girl, so this was for me for the incredibly beautiful & delightful Jenny Agutter....those were the days....
@Inkyminkyzizwoz So glad to hear she was seen at Last Night of the Proms 2011, I've not seen last year's yet. Did she perform or was she just sighted ?
My favorite film of all time. Great charm and lovingly made by Lionel Jeffries. Extremely well-acted. Jenny Agutter is superb, as is the rest of the cast. Great atmosphere and never fails to bring a tear to my eyes.
How would you compare the status of the children characters here to the status of the children in The Secret Garden? I'd really appreciate your opinions!
There was an article on North West Tonight this evening about the Flying Scotsman and Ranvia Singh said that every time she sees a steam train she thinks of this!
Thanks for uploading. I wanted to listen to it on cd tonight but could not find a Walkman. This does just fine though when "the gentlemen" come, old dad acts guilty, if you ask me.
From the mother's reaction when father said he would give up Saturday afternoon, I'm guessing they were supposed to go out together Saturday afternoon, or have some quality time while the kids were out.
Thank you so much for making this available. I have downloaded all 11 parts. I also have The Titifield Thunderbolt. Do you know of anyone who has The Iron Maiden? I can't find it here in the States
@iilovecats112233 - in my opinion Jenny has one of the most gorgeous girls voices. She never over does it but she is still completely hypnotic. In TRC she sounds young in her choice of words but her delivery and confidence indeed suggest an older person. Interestingly Sally was much older. I was 16 when u saw the film in 1970. She did to me exactly what the train nearly did to her. I have never recovered.
Always reminds me of Easter, for some reason. Perhaps, it's because they used to show this on the BBC at Eastertime. Along with such films as, 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.' Good, wholesome family entertainment. I don't know whether they still show it now, though.
I'm the same age as Jenny Agutter was whilst making this film, and I've seldom seen a teenage girl look and sound so elegant and sophisticated, with her hair up revealing dangly earrings and a swan-like neck. And nor have I heard a teenage girl speak with such soft and peaceful intonation. These days we're usually scruffy and possess something in our intonation that reveals our age, regardless of where in the world we're from. But this young lady seems much older.
@Ilovecats112233 I was born at precisely the same time as Jenny Agutter and boys and girls were brought up into a world influenced by the (genuine) middle class. Now it is the lower class which do so. Class in the past meant primarily well-bred and not necessarily money. You seem very perceptive and a real credit to the present!
From 4 July to 5 September there's going to be a theatrical performance of this at the old Waterloo International terminal in London - with a real steam locomotive!
I've been wondering what a modern version of this might be like - the father could be accused of losing those CDs from Revenue and Customs and hence be arrested!
I always loved the use of music as character colouring - the sitar for Aunt Emma, the wild bagpiping as the Scots Flier rushes past... just self conscious enough to be postmodern. Totally cool.
Great to be able to watch this on you tube, thank you!, In my opinion, no one can replace Bernard Cribbins as Mr Perks, or the rest of the cast!...I'm not a fan of the 2000 version.
I visited the station a few years ago, it's not far from Haworth,a beautiful part of the country!
@Northfieldclassics I quite like the 2000 version - there are a couple of scenes in it that aren't in this one. Also, in this one they still look quite well off after moving, whereas in the 2000 version they look a lot poorer because they're always wearing the same clothes - and the clothes themselves are a lot more basic, as is the house.
The one criticism I might have is the timing of the splits. Instead of blindly splitting it at every 10 minutes (which in some cases results in a split occuring in the middle of a sentence or even a word), I think it may have been better to have split it at natural breaks between scenes.
In fact, the BBC do NOT own this highly popular FILM version. The film rights were bought by its writer and director Lionel Jefferies. The misconception comes from the numerous BBC TV series and TV film dating from 1951 onwards to the present of which they do own the copyright.
An enchanting and sensitive story set in the days ( 1905 ) when the middle classes ( NOT the upper classes as historians mimic ) predominantly influenced society.
