Locking is not over rated if you look at ChinNa you can rip arms off or tear a head off in combat applications. in addition you can neutralize an opponent. Very difficult in today's world to hit someone as the cops will likely have a lot of witnesses who may just see your hit only. Being well balanced is where it is.
Spiral is important; however, as you may agree, everything comes from looseness, rooting, sensing. Figure it was a friendly demo cause this tai ji man can take out multiple attackers and not even break a sweat. MaHong's Top Students are very good.
@wannabeebee - It is not a demonstration, the guy in white asked what taiji has to offer in avoiding jiujutsu-style locks, so Yang He Fa (a student of Ma Hong) let him try to lock him, so he could show how taiji works with this.
It was 100% improvisation. I was there watching it live. Some guy with a camera happened to notice them and started filming uncalled for, which is why the video starts mid-game.
Oh and also, once a lock is truly completed you should not be able to get out of it. I agree. The trick is to neutralize waay before the lock is completed, or an instant before for countering. You cannot lock someone out who is using both soft (yielding movement) and the harder peng (which keeps structure intact)..try to lock someone out who can move like this (like water a bit..soft but resistant) and you will see what I mean.

This is BS, Only reason he can get out of those locks/holds is because the guy keeps loosening his grip at the end, If you lock his arm in tight and don't let go he's not gonna be getting out that easy. This Tai Chi Stuff is GARBAGE!!! Most usless style of Martial Arts I Ever seen!!!
you are going to judge an entire art based on one measly clip? I have practiced some TJQ and Bagua, and no single person can lock me out standing up because of following/yielding/neutralizing skills. (obviously on ground this does not apply).
Watch your language, Dan. Any internal martial artist worth his salt should be able to get out of any lock, standing or on the ground, as long as he's got half an inch (or less if you're good) of space to work with until the lock is tightened completely. Which is what you see here. No fake, just skill! BTW: Locking is overrated anyway, i's much more efficient to knock your opponent right out
Good video. Thanks for sharing this!

My god, did he try to do Nikkyo and Sankkyo?
He didn't do it particularly well.
In spite of the attacker's short comings, the master was pretty wicked.

F'ck the kimuro, why doesnt the attacker just use his elbows?
wannabeebee 3 years ago
Probably for the same reason the master isn't kneeing him in the crouch or punching him with his free hand.
