@MizAngelwingz James didn't take anything from Snape. Snape loved the Dark Arts & Lily hated them. Snape's love of the Dark Arts is what ultimately drove Lily away. If Snape had turned away from the Dark Arts & not associated with future Death Eaters Lily would have stayed with Snape. & seeing as Snape treated Harry like dirt throughout the series it shouldn't be hard to see why Harry never saw Snape as a protector.
