The "thing" in her apartment is probably a German ghost. My grandmother was a first generation German immigrant, and she told us that after the World Wars (or maybe just the first - I don't remember) the German people had to resort to eating rats as there was little food and almost no money.

I looked this up and the reason why a rat king is considered to be a bad omen is because rats are associated with disease, therefore, a large cluster of rats tied together are associated with lots of disease happening at the same time, i.e. a plague (or *the* plague). In fact, according to Google, the earliest known instances of rat kings were in the middle of the 16th century, when the plague was raging the hardest.
