The days of Debbie Reynolds and Gene Kelly dancing together would not bring in a soul to pay for the ticket and enjoy the movie. I met Kelly at Dodgers Stadium, at the concert of the Three Tenors. He used a walker, and was assisted by a young woman. His smile was radiant. I wanted to speak to him, however, too many people there that night. He was ailing and it was an effort to walk. Why do so many dancers end in severe arthritis? Kelly was a friendly, sensitive man.
It's no secret, that at that time, an actor had to know how to dance, sing, and act. That is a combination of talent. Today..the acting is good however, it is the nudity, the filthy language, and the open sex, that has destroyed motion pictures. I seldom go out to a picture. All you have to do is take you're clothes off, and make sexual advances. Such a pity.
I love this movie, because if you know the back story behind it it's really touching. This was the last film Judy did with MGM and originally Gene wasn't going to do it. He did it for her. His first movie at MGM was with Judy, For Me and My Gal. He was a rare and amazing talent, something that Hollywood is missing today. I don't know if I'm the only one I doubt it, but when you watch these old movies they actually get you to feel something not just enjoy the flashy effects.
They say he would rehearse for hours.....from 8 in the morning to midnight....that's a real true dancer for you....if we put our all into dance and really commit man we could do amazing things....most ppl dnt wanna put that type of time into the art of dance n e more...just make up an on the spot routine n be like ooooo shyt that's fye as fucks.....naw just recylcled moves from the true dancers.....
Another example would be Donald O'Connor. They would do the same routine and Donald would match everything that Kelly was doing, but it seemed like more effort was put in to keep up with Kelley. Gene was more crisp with his moves, plus had better extension with his talent for making it look like he wasn't even trying
Creativity at it's finest. When you come across a creaky floor board and a newspaper, you probably see a problem and words about other problems. Gene Kelly saw a dance waiting to happen.
Watching Gene Kelly dance always makes my day, and will probably make a million others' days across the world in future generations just as it does mine... on and on and on...:)
He has the stature of a Greek god and the eligance of.....well....a tap dancer. And when he smiles, my heart sighs. I almost want to cry just thinking about it.
even though I love michael jackson I will have to say that Gene Kelly originated white socks and black shoes haha not saying michael claimed he originated it but i'm just making a non evil statement =)
This is proof of how light on his feet Kelly was. To tap dance on a newspaper without ripping it at all. True his form of dancing was more athletic than Astaire's, but still graceful and floating on air.
@ShortySOM I love your comment, but I hate it when astaire and kelly are compared, they are both the best dancers to have ever lived, and were both very different, they are both perfect
@barelols I hear you... it was not meant as a shot at Astaire's style because his style was much different from Kelly. His was more ballroom style and Kelly was athletic
Gene realised that the newspaper needed to be 3 months old to be the right texture to rip the way he wanted it to! This dance number was created by Gene while he was waiting for Judy G to recover from one of her frequent panic attacks/AODA episodes. It highlights Gene's meticulous preparation and also the spontaneous, serendipitous discoveries that are his creative process. There are many distinctions in his dance style that are different from and similar to Fred's. Both men were champs.
I was born in the wrong decade. Words cannot describe my love for this man. I feel like I'm the only 16 year old on the planet with a good taste in film.
@KeepItGayStageNazi yeah i agree im not 16 but really close and i absolutely love him and old movies!! i wish movies were like this now but they arent any where close...now they have all this swearing and naked stuff in them...we are definatly in the wrong decade :)
@xneonpolkadotsx Haha well, those films that have all of the swearing and "naked stuff" can actually be very good. Take Fight Club for example. A fantastic piece of film. You just have to find the right movies.
Gene just comes across as totally spontaneous...you can't help but be pulled into any dance routine he performs. I don't think any other dancer could ever do something like this half as good as Gene did.
I think I've watched every episode of "So You Think You can Dance" since it started but there hasn't been anybody that even comes close to this guys talent. I could watch him all day. People probably don't think of dancers as athletes but just try and do what they do and see how that works out for ya.
Apparently this movie took six months to shoot because Judy Garland was having any number of problems but Gene stood by her because of how nice she was when he first came to Hollywood and co-starred in Me And My Gal. But, having a LOT of time on his hands, came up with this brilliant number.
I was born in the wrong decade. I mean what other 16 year old girl from a big city loves loves loves old musical movies, old television like Dick van Dyke, and its obsessed with classic Broadway showtunes. That's enough proof that i was born in the wrong decade. Ugh I hate today's music and film. It's all shit compared to this gold.
@KeepItGayStageNazi Oh my gosh!! I felt that way too! I was 12 when I fell in love with him and now I'm 20! I LOVE the dick van dyke show and grew up watching that!! and I hate the now music!! yah there are other teens out there like me!!! haha good for you! you are being shown true entertainment!!
@KeepItGayStageNazi My mom always tells me I was born in the wrong decade too, and I'm only 15. I love these old movies, especially Gene Kelly. You're right, today's films are terrible. They don't make very good musicals nowadays.
@hancar & Treblemaker09: I'm with y'all; I just love Gene Kelly & can watch him all day. I'm sorry I did not get a chance to meet him; he was hella cool.
The primary difference between Astaire and Kelly is that Kelly seemed to put a little muscle in his step, while Astaire seemed like floating. But this clip demonstrates the delicate, caring, observant Kelly. With that said, one cannot, should not, compare two of the greatest figures in musical/movie history. They were movie perfection in every step. This scene is one of my favorites because Kelly is projecting a sort of child-like curiosity that simply leaps into our hearts like a loving memory.
@GocoProductions Very well said! They were both great, but different styles. Gene was a little more athletic, while Fred was a little more elegant. They both seemed to defy gravity!
@GocoProductions You're right they aren't comparable, Astaire was the representation of the classy and elegant dancer while Kelly aimed to portray the every day man to make it seem like anyone could start dancing. They both portray two very different aspects of dance and are both quite amazing.
@GocoProductions There probably wasn't a primary difference inAstaire & Kelly as far as their dancing styles. Astaire showed the muscle in many performances over the years. His best efforts were delicate flowing dance maneuvers. Kelly in "Brigadoon" performed scenes that had Astaire qualities which were remarkable. Both of these performers were a part of my life that I will treasure (thanks to youtube) for the rest of my life.
Wow this was actually really fantastic. It's great to see such a manly-looking man being so great at dancing. I was smiling so huge through this, it's so sweet and simple. ^"Gene-ius," haha! I also loved his awesome spins. So refined.
If it weren't for the fact that I shudder at the sound of creaking floorboards (I know, it's strange), this would probably be my favourite of Gene Kelly's dances. :D
I always loved the scenes where he danced alone. There's really something beautiful about the thought that no one saw him do that, except us the audience. It's like how we all dance in our minds in those moments when we're in love or happy. This is why this scene just made me smile. :)
Prescription for smiles: Watch Gene Kelly, Michael Jackson, Donald O'Connor and/or Fred Astaire dancing--in no particular order. All are great & guaranteed to improve your day, as mine just was
Yes, he did choreograph at least most of his dance numbers... I'm not sure if he did all of them, though. I've heard that he did choreograph this one, though. :) <3
When it came to making musicals with our late friend Gene Kelly in them after the 30's were over, he pretty much was always put in charge of the dancing sections, especially if he was the leading man.
This innovative incorporation of a creaky floorboard & a newspaper sheet were one of many results of his own creative freedom :o)
i see alot of ppl on this page arguing that gene kelly is a better tap dancer than mj. although that is true, u must know mj wasnt about tap, he was about dance in general. i believe mj was the greatest dancer ever because even though he wasnt the best at a certain style, he covered all styles and moulded them all together. at this he was the best. watch his panther dance if u wanna see him tap dance..
anyway this is a gene kelly vid, plz just watch his genius and enjoy it...
Only he could make dancing on newspaper sexy...

does anyone know if he did is own choreography?
rockclimber21 1 year ago
@rockclimber21

Wish I could like him more. Everything from the late 40's on looks so self-aware.
