I'm not a fan of either of the Williams sisters' forehands. Serena's is slightly better than Venus's, but neither are technically sound shots. Serena has a tendency to strike the ball slightly behind her, when the point of contact is supposed to be in front of your body. She hits it well here, but under pressure this is the shot that lets her down. The rest of her game (her impeccable serve and backhand) carries her.

I don't think her problem is point of contact...I think it's the actually motion of it all, which is why you see her often rehearse the motion after a bad miss.

She has so many different ways to produce the shot, which doesn't allow for much consistency. Sometimes you get the windshield-wiper (Upside-Down U) swing from her...but then you have the lasso, the half-lasso, and then there's one where she curves around the ball to give it more side-spin.

It's probably a combination of both. I just rewatched her loss to Sharapova at Wimbledon in 2004, and she kept hitting the ball behind her. When you refer to lasso, do you mean the reverse follow-through? (Follow through over right shoulder) Because virtually every player hits with that shot once in a while, particularly the women.

Serena's problem isn't the motion. She sets up well and has a good follow through. It's when she hits the ball. She has a tendency to pull up on the forehand, which is a result of the point of contact being behind you.
