  • Thank you for the video and the memories. I'm from Iaeger and did ride the bus because we didn't live in town. Loved growing up in the small safe community where everybody knew everybody. I love McDowell County and though I haven't lived there in years it will always be my home!

@Scottlanter - I live in a small community not far from you - I live in Hillsboro. I love your Kroger's Marketplace. :-)

  • @TheMimiof8 Glad you enjoyed the video......

  • Thank you, bassthumper, for sharing this video. My mother was born in War, and lived in Coalwood until she was 7 years old. She remembers her school very well. The last time we saw the old Coalwood school was about 35 years ago. We live in southern Ohio nowi in a rural community called Mt. Orab. My mother is 71 now, and she wants visit Coalwood to see her hometown soon. Even though no one is there who would still remember her, she has fond memories. We are planning to take her this year.

  • @ScottLanter I hope you have a wonderful visit. I hope your mother is not taken back and saddened by all the changes. Thanks for writing and God bless.

  • The B-O-E should tear them down.

  • Wonderful video and well said. I went to Superior Elm and it just seems the kids today miss out on what we had.

  • I was back in Gary a couple of years ago and went the old school. It was so sad, I could see where we used stand and line up after lunch on the stairs. I made my mom take a picture of me there.

  • @WvWooldridge Yes, it is sad.

  • @NiteBlogger thank you very much.

  • Switchback was in a decrepit state after the floods of 2001 it was i good school when i went there.

  • This video is beautifully created. I know these locations and schools too well. I was born and raised there living from Hemphill to Northfork before moving to Mercer County. It is so sad seeing how everything has went down hill. But honestly, the beauty of home never truly leaves our souls or our memories~Thank you for a lovely post.

  • Thank you very much.

  • You rock. Love the photos.

  • Thank you.

  • My family lived in Pocahontas, VA for generations. My grandfather and two uncles were miners in the area and one of them worked in the Gary mines before retiring after 30 years as a proud UMWA member. My uncles, aunts, cousins, sister and I attended Pocahontas elementary school in a building almost identical to the one in your video. It's gone now - all that remains is a gravel parking lot. Thanks for the memories. We moved to CA in 1963 but I still have fond memories of that time.

  • Thank you for watching.

  • I was born in Maybeury but moved to Roanoke, Va. with my family when I was nine. My two sisters and my older brother went to Elkhorn High School and graduated from there. I have fond memories of McDowell County. Where were you raised and where did you go to school?

  • I was raised in Premier. I still live here. I went to Welch High School. Thank you for watching.

  • I cant get over this vid. Great job!

  • Thank you very much!

  • Sorry....I was signed into the wrong account. Yes, I took those pictures. Thank you for looking.

  • Thank you for sharing those images.

When left undisturbed and Natural, Nature takes over and returns everything to its original beauty.

There is a haunting quality to your photographs. They reflect a more vibrant time when the buildings were full of children and noise and at the same time they display a peaceful quality of Nature slowly reclaiming what belongs to her.

Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful view of what touches your heart.

    David

  • David, thank you for watching. Yes, I love my home place and I love my heritage. Thanks for being a friend.
