@emilyhale27 The base of this basket measures 7" x 5" so I just have the reed evenly spaced to create a base of that size. The spaces are approximately 3/8" square.

you guys should go for a holliday in zanzibar... then go on a spice tour.... now that is weaving like a king... the guy made a frog... then a basket... then a hat.... and then a tie for me.... he did this all in about 3minutes while we were walking and all he used were a few leaves and a knife.... while we were walking by the way.... he didnt stop and sit down... oh another thing... he was about 11 years old :)
@joyo2009 I live in Mexico, and a lot of people here weave baskets. They even do shapes such as burros with carts or swans. You can use paper as thin as newspaper. One trick is to roll up the newspaper as tight as possilbe. Use small dabs from a glue gun to hold these together. These are used to weave your projects. The trick to keeping them sturdy is using a stain/varnish combination. You can add lace around the edges also with the glue gun. With varnish, they are washable. Helpful? Darren
I was wondering.. I have some extra hickory bark from weaving a seat for a chair.. do you think hickory bark is a suitable material for one of these basket?
You are an incredible teacher -- so quiet and thorough....it's a pleasure to watch and learn from you. I have boxes of reeds, etc., that I purchased years and years ago determined to learn on my own. I can watch you and get tips and instruction that I would never have been able to get in the past. I'm somewhat homebound and cannot take regular classroom classes...THANK YOU! Jill
I have seen baskets made from paper but I haven't tried doing that myself. I would google paper baskets and hopefully you will get some good advice. I think you need to use several layers of paper or use a medium with the paper to make the paper more substantial.
I've been wanting to find someone to teach me how to weave my own baskets..so THANK YOU soo much for posting this, no i can run out and get the materials to get started..you are truly an amazing artist:)
I've never heard of a spoke weight before! Interesting. You sure put those reeds in perfectly the first time! Imagine having put them in at the right measurements on the first try! You're a pro, for sure!
btw, you can edit on youtube, once you have them up, you can add little comments which will show up on the screen.
