I past a cop going the opposite direction at about 50 MPH, and the DMV had my plates messed up and I knew it. But the cop pulled a u-turn and pulled me over. So these system can catch plates while moving. Its nuts.
I guess the chilling thing is the idea that by linking all the scans of your license plate, the government could put together a log of your comings and goings all day.
This is just more power than the government should have, even if it technically is constitutional.
We are really on the verge of living in a surveillance state. We are giving up liberty for a false sense of security.
4th Amendment: The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the person or things to be seized.
Where is the warrant for this kind of search? Why is there no probable cause, no description of the place to be searched? Where is the oath or affirmation of evidence of wrongdoing?
There is no presumption of privacy in public places, but this technology creates a surveilance state that is no compatible with a free country and a limited constitutional government.
It's fine to say you don't care about YOUR right to privacy, but you have no right to take away MY or anyone elses right to privacy! So go ahead and give it up. One day, they will come for a right that you really do value, but then the rest of us won't be around to come to your aid.
Well put freesk8(both your messages)! I think MrBeatnik is honestly looking for info on this. IE: Links to court decisions regarding being surveillances. Its hard to post URLs on YouTube. :-S
I do not trust the government with this power. Power corrupts. This can be used to maintain a database of the comings and goings of innocent people, which can then be searched to look for illicit behavior. But permission for such searches should only be with a warrent, based on probable cause. Without that, the police are going on a "fishing trip" and this creates a chilling "police state" where people are afraid to go outside.
whats the difference really? He is driving on public roads and being monitored. The other way is just not physically touching a vehicle but still monitoring him.
There are other sites I had that dealt more specifically with CCTV issues and unauthorized license plate inquiries. I'll post them when I dig them up again.
There is no point discussing this with you. You come from a society where surveillance is accepted as the norm. Stay in the UK and enjoy it - just do not try to pollute our freer societies with your accept form of tyranny. This is about Canada thus comments are regarding Canadian values of freedom.
Just realized you are from the UK. The UK has the most horrid Civil Rights and the most TRACKED society. Why do you think so many people fled England back in the day and set up FREE SOCIETIES. You are still worthless subjects in the UK.
First of all, you are not the government or the police. Secondly you have the right to free movement with out surveillance. I'm confused. Are you arguing against constitutional rights?
If the plates are recorded with GPS, then they can almost instantly know where you been in your car. The statement "I have nothing to hide" is wrong way of thinking. It MUST be "I have reasonable suspicion" before there is any invasion of your privacy. Quite simply this violates it. There are reasons we have rights and we should hold tightly onto them. Less we lose them all one by one.
This was shot in BC Canada. In BC at least it's NOT CRIMINAL. But regardless it is stupid. Police should be protecting with CRIME (like pig farm murders) and not tax collections. The data is not anything unmanageable. Data on every phone call made is recorded. Which do you think there is more of per day, phone calls or cars on the road? Think about it.
No crime. It falls under the provincial motor vehicle branch and not the criminal code. You can't go to jail for it, you can get a fine authorized by the courts... but you can fight that. (aka taxation). And whats with this HUGE database? You only need to record 4 integers at best. DATETIME/PLATE/GPS X/GPS Y At most 16 bytes each. Million scans = ~16megs thats not a HUGE database.
thats pretty scary. Im in the middle of a problem with getting my license plate reinstated and ride a motorcycle which the police have a heavy bias against in my area, making current life a battle between livelyhood and transportation. This just compounds the problem for people like me.
The poster of this video is a fucking moron. Probable does drugs and has no idea whats going on. Watch the fucking video and find out what it is used for.
this is fukin stupid, just another way for cops to steal money by handing out parking, seat belts and expired license plates tickets to innocent citizens instead of catching the real criminals that are robbing people.
I feel so safe... being watchdogged by the police sgt. who can't bother to buckle up. Actually... I have no problem with this system. (But buckle up, dude.) More than just catch stolen cars, it could catch chronic drunk drivers. It can also tell cops who's driving without insurance without having to call in a tag. It could alert to things 'not quite right'-- licenses that haven't been renewed.
There are way too many reasons to state in a small message. Probably the best thing is to ask yourself why have most free countries felt it originally necessary to may safe guards against police violating your right to freedom of movement without surveillance. I mean if it was no big deal why would they have fraught to have these rights?
Duh, they are not performing surveillance on you..they could care less where you go you fool. They want to know if you are driving a stolen car or if you have insurance...its called protecting the public good. I know if my car got stolen, I would appreciate this. Just what do you thing that cop behind you at the red light has been doing for the past 20 years or so anyways?
It wont stop car thieves - it will make them just become more resourceful. Driving without insurance is DUMB but not a CRIME. People fight having their license plate ran needlessly all the time. Check the courts. Just most people are too lazy to request a log and follow up on this or cant be bothered to fight it.
Yeah but this system doesn't record it's surveillance to anywhere (I presume), so the "surveillance" is basicly the 2 seconds that your car is on the screen of a police car and most probably nobody isn't even watching the screen at that moment. Recording surveillance data would be a different story though.
What would be the point of recording every car? It would require huge databases (to save and store every car that these police cars pass by). So yeah, I don't know if they're recording them, but I definitely don't think so. Of course when there's a match then it would be recorded.
say hello to robocop...in the future, cops will wear sunglasses that scan faces and automatically identify wanted criminals...I believe it will happen...by then TVs will be so small kids can wear them as necklaces...
I have a valid licence, I have insurance and my car isn't stolen....run my plates as much as you want. Cops run plates all the time, if your car is ok, then you are ok and you never knew it..if you knew it, you were guilty of something and too fucking bad if your "civil liberties" got violated. ACLU, fuck you.
There are tons of cases cited in federal court of Canada that relate to your right to freedom of movement with out surveillance. This infringes on your rights. Police must be able to demonstrate probable cause. You have to be completely ignorant to think this is acceptable and has no negative ramifications. The slippery slope here is not leading to conspiracy theory but that of letting your rights go inch by inch (cm by cm).
There's good/bad in everything, hey its great ya got your car back, they got the guy whos got 3 dozen speeding tickets but come on you seen him Manipulate the data found in the system. well for every Good cop theres a Dirty 1 or 2, so when ya piss'em off but yer innocent, in goes yer # and thats all it takes... bottom line COPs are getting LAZY "Papers please"
That on-board computer can then also record all this information so that there is a record of where your vehicle (and therefore most likely YOU) have been at a certain point in time.
It sounds all great and wonderful. I mean, who likes the bad guys.... but so easily can this technology be made to turn against you. History shows when governments assume your are guilty and demand "papers" without cause they always end up abusing the citizens or groups there of. The person you should watch out for most is not some car thief, it is your own government.
"As long as you are not breaking the law then you have nothing to worry about."
That only works if you agree that the law is just. What if it isn't??? Do you remain obedient then? The more powerful a technology is, the more good AND harm it can do.
Are you saying that having to have insurance is unjust? Or the fact that grand theft auto is illegal is unjust? Cuz when cops run plates, thats what they are looking for...and thats ok by me. Your argument is an argument for anarchy, juvenile at best.
No, the laws you describe are just laws. I'm talking about unjust laws like the Patriot Act or laws to come that will make Patriot look like child's play. The police might have mundane, routine uses for this system, but what about the CIA/FBI? I'm sure they will be more creative in their application...
My car was stolen a few years ago. This would have been a nice system in place to get my car back rather than the police finding it a month later stripped to the bone.

For every great thing there is an idiot who will call it a conspiracy. As long as you are not breaking the law then you have nothing to worry about. Ya ride a bike, get exersize! Its a known fact N Americans are amoung the fattest ppl in the world! Maybe this new system will do y'all a favor! Generally skinny ppl don't bitch as much as fatties do! Walk! Ride a bike! Stop bitching abouta program which could save your life.
you know what, though, they also have that facial recognition software...I bet in 15 years you'll have cops on bikes and walking wearing sunglasses that scan faces and identify criminals automatically without the cop even looking at the person...crazy...
There is nothing wrong with this system. Why are people bitching and complaining? It catches STOLEN cars. Isn't this a good thing? Vancouver is one of the biggest stolen car cities in North America. As for catching uninsured cars there's nothing wrong with that either. If you have a problem with it then insure your car you cheap bastards. You have nothing to fear if your a law abiding citizen.
Don't be such an idiot! Last time I checked my map of Canada, BC (from the bcdudz) a few provinces over from Quebec (like on the OTHER side of Canada). So next time you want to put someone down, try getting the facts straight before YOU yourself look like the moron!
BC Budz...totally agree with you (and I'm from BC too).
I live in British Columbia, so this saddens me even more so than it would, had this been from a different Province in Canada, or a State in the U.S. It looks like that fuckin' pig wasn't wearing his seatbelt. Completely disgusting. Fuck the R.C.M.P., and fuck the A.L.P.R. system. Good people in government need to stop that from being implemented, asap.
Im in BC too and Im NOT saddened. When you get your car stolen and the RCMP finds your car because of this new system I'd like to see how angry you are then! If your child is kidnapped and found in a vehical found by this system, how saddened will you be then?? I think its great. I say GOOD FOR YOU RCMP.
They might as well micro chip us all so all they have to do is scan us and all the info of our lives comes up no need to have plates tags bages or what ever anymore. Its going to come down to this people
Well I cant say I'm surprised, here in Alberta we have been hit by Photo Radar for to long (this is a Dallas company system we are currently changing from). I use to live in Ontario where they try'D this system on the 400 series Hwy's. Not to mention it's illegal in this province (not sure about B.C.) to have any monitor with-in eye sight of a Driver.. So NO in dash fancy Gizmo's. I wonder if this get's some of that 430 Million funding over next 5yrs to catch Terrorists!
Declaration of Independence. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security.

As for catching uninsured cars there's nothing wrong with that either. If you have a problem with it then insure your car you cheap bastards. You have nothing to fear if your a law abiding citizen.

The police have always "policed" everyone, and are supposed to. This doesn't violate anyone unless you've committed a crime idiot!

A student I know was working on something similar for his final project back in 2001 and I can tell you it's not that difficult to implement.
