  • He doesn't know the name of that chord, but he knew its sound and how it's used. What is in a name anyway?

  • these videos should 've been filmed by the Timescapes Crew at 4K Resolutions.

  • Fenders and squiers? wat is goin on hurr

  • @aaaaasssss22 Its probably before they could afford PRS guitars.

  • -What chord is that?

Mikael: I have no idea, but I use it all the time.

  • are there any other videosof mikael useing a stratocaster?

  • Comment removed

  • @SandwichesPorkchop credence

  • Theory is also important but you really need the passion for it, not the feeling, passion is more precise.

  • @cubbex It obviously is not *important* at all, how could they've made it so far and still going strong without it then? Music theory is just how to understand relations in music and explaining it, if you can comprehend it and learn it intuitively, that doesn't make you any less qualified to become a professional musician. So stop it with all that "ah ma god, u has 2 lrn MUZAK THEORI!!!" it's just stupid and arrogant.

  • @BenjaminProd Thats why I love Mikael so much because he writes amazing songs with no knowledge of music theory,I think having no rules in music gives you no boundaries and more room in imagination

  • If you go to Spain it helps to speak spanish. When writing music its good to 'speak' music. Akerfelt knows plenty, trust me. What did you think that he picked up a guitar and just started writing masterpieces? Whens the last time you heard someone pick up a welder for the first time and build an airplane?I must bring you back to reality. It takes years and years of musical study to write as they do. Just because he doesn't know what chord he is playing doesn't mean he cant figure it out.

  • @markrobertsfdsa Your comparison contains quite an obvious fallacy. In order to build a plane (as well as taking more than just a welder) you would have to follow a technique that is set in stone. You couldn't just make some stuff up and have said plane work. However, in this case, like with all music, you don't have to follow any predefined steps to create something that sounds good. I'm sure over the years he has picked up some knowledge, however, which is inevitable after twenty years+.

  • 1:56 what cord is that? -I DON'T KNOW WHAT CORD

    <3 Mikael

  • the intro song is called Credence

  • great musicians playing and u film that whit 20 $ camera?!

  • What chord is that? - I don't know, but... Haha I love how he starts playing so you cant hear him talk and he has a jolly smile while doing it :)

  • it sucks that opeth will never here their music as a fan.

  • I feel like i know him through his music, i mean if i saw him somewhere i would go and have a talk with him easily. Mighty band.

  • Drapery Falls is one of my favourite Opeth songs. That part just before it all breaks out and the vocals are doing that descending thing... AAAAAHHH

  • @CaptainPancake1 Oh. Incredible.

  • The Drapery Falls... *sigh* eargasm.

  • the song they played at the beginning before they started teaching was the verse from "credence" fuckin AWESOME

  • with this video qualty you learn a shit lol

  • Eb minor 7th b5 or an Eb half diminshed is the first chord.

  • @Xingyiquana the song in th beginning is called Drapery Falls

  • guitar instructional video fail. Damn good band, damn good song. But bloody hell, focusing on tattoos? And poor quality of observing right and left hand techniques, etc., etc. for playing this song.

  • @JohnCornnells Agreed. guitar.com sucks balls.. They fail in general.

  • @Xingyiquana no problem :) dont know why u didnt notice! credence is bloody brilliant !

  • @Xingyiquana credence ;)

  • "hey I'm michael, and I AM GODDDDD" that's what he should've said.

  • His voice is so fucking sexy!

    I love Mikael Akerfledt. =)

  • non si vede un cazzo...non si capiscono nè i tasti nè le corde da suonare

  • I am starting to notice that some of the greatest musicians don't even care about knowing all their music theory.

It's like this: theory is good to know, but also very important in "forgetting" so that you can be creative in writing.

  • have they done an unplugged type album yet and if not then what are they waiting on!

  • damnation is as close as playing unplugged as they'll get. mikael is working on his own singer/songwriter album though... i'll be getting it for sure, that guy is my example.

  • @pinescentedwoodsmoke omg!!!! whats it gonna be called?

  • When playing guitar as long as they have, the mind starts to understands chords and music theory even if it is on a subconscious level. Most players start to pick up on the basic building blocks of music, but the creative nuances come from experience and "shapes". Like flatting a 3rd in a Major triad and remembering the effect it has on a riff. I agree with Karhuherraz.

  • Very cool and informal, I never associated a guitar like that for this genre of music.

  • There is two different scenarios: 1. Well he might know the music theory, but he is saying "I dont know" because if he said what chord is that, then some fucking prick would obviously say "hey u aint playing that chord right" then 2. He really doesnt know

  • WHat is that chord @ 2:37?

  • C Minor add 9 :)

  • @kongerle

Thank you very much. You take music theory? (I may have spelled that wrong)

  • @kongerle Nice ;)

  • i was actually discussing this today, opeth is pure skill without much musical knowledge, but there easily on my top 3 band list!

amazing chords, amazing riffs and nice solos

  • +1 I dont know what chord!)) Ahaha!) But very cool! Very natural music from heart!

  • @ 1:58 Guy: "The chord is that?" Mike: " idk what chord..." hahaha @ 5:30 lol Akerfeldt kills it)))

This is a `look how we play our song and guess the chords by ear` instructional video. LOL) so simple and.. home) Opeth to die.

  • @iVanHalen666

    amazing!!! just fucking amazing

  • guys this video came out a long time ago at least 5 years ago, back then they werent as big as they are now, plus it was probably some interview they flew into or drove to and the staff was like ok use these instruments this is all we have, opeth is finally getting their recognition they so justly deserve but to me its still not as much as they should be getting, they get bigger after each release and our touring with dream theater, so its only headed up for the guys from opeth

  • But he straight up said he loves that specific guitar

  • lol Mendez is like

    this bass sucks dick wtf

  • Where the hell did they get those instruments??!! Mendez with a Squire???!!!!! jajajajajaja

  • LOL!!!!!!!!!XD

  • its called being in a highly underated working band. i cant believe they arent bigger than dream theatre

  • AGREE...

  • yeah man, i still dont get why they r not considered as one of the best, which they are. i think this is partly due to the heavy nature of their music and the length of the songs. but if only people gave em some time, and listened closely, they would see how amazing and original they r.

  • @daveymurrayrules

    they totally are... hahahahaha

  • @daveymurrayrules

I fancy DT.... but fuck you are absolutely right!

  • yeee hahahaha and the ... "Fend" which is playing Mike is... bad tuned xDD listen to that 3rd string)) ahhh! just hedious!

  • not true

  • so squire basses are like fenders if youre a bassist you would know. lol it is funny i think thats the cheap 100 dollar one

  • Tasty strat tone.

  • Oh shit where is his prs

  • RE: Mendez & Squier Bass

I can't speak for him, but my main bass sits in its case until I rehearse with my band or do a gig. I have an old beater that I practice with at home. Having to put it down to answer the phone or whatever, I don't care if there is a ding or scratch put on it. Or if i spill my coffee on it. Or if I inadvertently knock it over. You get the picture.

Besides, other than the electronics, Squier = Fender.

    Good + Inexpensive = Schecter :)

  • especially for mendez having an expensive fender bass ( i think he playes marcus miller a lot) and the other guys haveing prs which cost three thousand bucks

  • Mike looks Mexican XD

  • Ah,,, i love that,

they opened the interview with a riff from my favorite Opeth song,

    Credence

  • I thought it was the calm part of When XD

  • holy shit mickael playing a strat lol

  • lol the bassist's playing a squier

  • "what chord is that? - dont know, im always playin it" - thanks that there are people making music without theorymasses

  • A must song to know by Opeth ;pp

    Opeth is damn amazing!!

  • yeah i know so much chords but i dont know the fucking names for them. the only chords i can name are the basic ones. not all those others

  • -''What chord is that''

    -''I don't know''

LOL!! but it dosen't matter, Mikael is still a musical genius to me.

  • I think that's great. Knowing the chords by name is not important, even if useful in some things. Knowing them by heart is what counts. Having an emotional bond with them.

  • @mad00002 Whoa. I feel like that all the time!

You just put words to it. awesome.

  • @mad00002 if u dont know the name of chords how u ll put it in the music if u dont know it. first u hav to know about it then u ll think to put it in the music ... for example if u know how to do add substract but dont know the name of of addition how u ll put it in the practical work ..

  • @452ist You just use what feels right... Hell, i use chords that I don't know the name of. I just think they sound cool, so i use them where they'd fit.

  • @BigCanOfBeans yes in the feeling itz fine feeling is not music theory but in some condition u should know the relation of chords and application so u can make a good feeling to the song but u r right although it feelings.

  • @452ist its all feelings, there are hundres of chords on the guitar, guys like Opeth write based on what they and hear and feel. Of course some knowledge of chord progression is important, but feel is more important.

  • He really is a musical genius; he's completely self-taught and has no knowledge in scales and chords.

  • @RHCPfan Well you can;t say he has no knowlege in scales and chords as he clearly has alot he may not know he's playin Phrygian,Locrian etc but he's obviously developed a stunning ear and sense of composition.

  • is this true? amazing.

  • @RHCPfan I guess that's how you become free-minded.

  • @RHCPfan of course he has, and he makes good use of it

  • @RHCPfan Thank his grandmother for getting him his first acoustic as a child eh?

  • @RHCPfan lol ive been playing guitar for 10 years and have never heard of a chord or scale

  • @RHCPfan I seriously doubt that when he uses the hardest chords all the time

  • @RHCPfan That's an evidence that when you have a talent, you have a talent indeed.

  • besides... not all chords exist... you can come up with a chord that doesn't exist but still sounds good

    music is very limited...

  • I understand but I've been studying in music for a year now and I learned that you can give a name to any chords.... it could be like a ''C sharp minor (major 7) flat 9 sharp11'' and so one... but I totally understand what you're saying... Akerfeldt is a musical genius. That he knows the musical theory or not, he's a god to me.

  • there is no such thing as a non-existing chord, if you play a chord it exists. Ohwell details details...

  • well.. has every chord a name though..?

  • every chord can be given a name. Though naming chords can be a bit tricky with 'weird' chords... The name of a chord is basically just a systematic way of indicating which notes are being played.

  • Yes. Any three combination of notes can be given a name.

  • Comment removed

  • I might just go and invent the V minor.

  • Especially if you count psuedo chords, I dont think you can know all of them inside out and use them while your improvising.

I think a lot of good songs are made of coincidence, you hit something that sounds cool and "hey!" you got something to base a song on.

  • Credence

  • Standard tuning? Or drop D?

  • It's in standard tuning.

  • lol, and what chord is that?

hahahah i dunno i use them all together

Rock The Fuck On Opeth :D

  • Ebow in this piece is everything... Crushes me whenever I hear it...

  • omg that intro they did is fucking amazinggg im trying to learn it or replay something close to it and its just fucking beautifull ..

    Opeth is fucking amazing

  • 'I'm Martin Bass' lol

    Long live Opeth!

  • It is very hard to get a metal tone with Strats but some people manage it. Maybe he uses one for this song cuz the neck pickup on a Strat or Tele has a really nice tonality to it.

  • No !!!...normally he uses prs guitars...these are borrowed instruments for the vid

  • 'What chord is that?' 'I don't know.' Akerfeldt is a god. Conjures up so much emotion.

  • no words only emotions......

  • they used to use fenders and jacksons on there first album orchid, until Akerfeldt found out about PRS.

  • He knew of PRS and to date still prefers strats, but he claims he can't get the metal tone he wants with strats

  • wanted the PRS because he gets the strat AND les paul combo...

  • That is messed up but he still rocks it

  • a Squier? What is he fucking Pete Wentz?

  • yea, were is his vintage jazz bass that he always plays?

  • I'm guessing they just grabbed a couple band members, handed them the neariest instruments and told them to do a lesson. That happens sometimes.

  • Yeah, those instruments look NOTHING like the guitars that Lindgren or Mendez uses.. I dont doubt Akerfeldts though... hes got a few strats, i saw when he came to Tempe last month.

  • he does mainly play prs guitars though

  • He actually uses a Marcus Miller Jazz Bass.

  • theyre not bad for basses they sound pretty good and feel good in my opinion.Anddont u dare insult Mendez with ur nasty nasty words haha

  • I bought a Squier guitar off a guy for $35 American dollars and threw on some fancy looking hardware and sold it at a jacked up price. While I still had it it had a really smooth, fat tone. I suppose some would prefer that in a bass guitar.

  • I SIMPLY love the bassline on this song.

    Mendez FTW

  • Poor Mendez... they gave him a Squier...

  • yea that's fucked up

maybe it's a deal of some sort between fender/squier (he uses fender I think) and Mendez?

  • or he didn't want to use his awesome basses so he just grabbed the crappy one

  • PLEASE!! where are the chords of that intro at the beggining?

  • A minoradd9: x-A-A-C-B-E

    and

    AminorMajor7add9: x-D#-A-C-B-E

  • That was the verse, then the Intro is:

    CminAdd9 and BbminAdd9

  • I fuckin love this song

  • The chord sounds like a Dim7th.

  • Just for the record

    The first song is Credence!

    for anyone whos wondering

  • Peter has huge hands.

  • I love Mikael.

  • when was this??

  • probably in 2001 or 2002

  • Hmm, if I have it right , I think that they are my uncels friends

  • I hate that they don't ask Mendez any questions - ESPECIALLY pertaining to this song since the bass plays such a huge role in it's epicness.

  • Martin Mendez is my fuckin idol so far, i also find it sad

  • i dont get why people hate youy comment xD

  • Maybe the thought he meant that it as shit and not the shit.

  • hey guys does anyone know which song is the one they play in the begining? at 0:27.thank you.

  • Credence... it's already been said, a lot!

  • thanks, wow, i love this song!!

  • These guys are talented and make some good riffs!!

I just found this band today, and they are really good!!

  • "we're opeth.

    YEAHHHHHHHHH!!!" :P

  • hey, that was pretty cool... i'm learning that right now...

  • Very cool.

  • what chord was that? i dunno, but i use it all the time! fuk yes lmao whatta legend.

  • LOL!! it's hard to believe he was serious! but if he was - ROFLMAO

  • haha yeah. but its funny how many top notch musicians dont know much music theory. (not saying that he doesnt know any theory tho, it just brought it to my mind)but hey, if it sounds good im all for it

  • GOD..

  • squier bass?!

  • yep my school has the same one

  • yeah that's cool, shows he chooses his instrument solely for the sound, not the brand name. Or maybe it's just for marketing to sell more squiers:p

  • Nah it wouldn't be just for the sound. You can change how any guitar sounds with enough tweaking and equipment changes. It's probably just personal choice. Even still... I would never buy a Squier, or a Fender, for that matter. Gibson and PRS are the winners :P

  • I don't think these instruments are theirs. What usually happens in these types of video interviews is that musicians will play whatever is there to play at the place of the interview if they did not bring their own instruments for whatever reason. It happens a lot in interviews for guitar magazines.

  • Yeah, that's true.I read once an interview with Kiko Loureiro where they got him and amp without distortion to play XD

  • what you sayin foo'

kiko is be a sexy guitartist

  • You didn`t get it.The magazine got him poor equipment..it`s not his fault. What the hell did you undestand?

  • I thought you were implying that he was a terrible guitarist hiding behind distortion, which he isnt.

    :)

  • what is the very first song they play

  • Credence, off the My Arms, Your Hearse album.

  • Ein Wahnsinns-Song..coole Session!

  • It looks like an improvised lesson and they just threw whatever guitars were laying around at them to play

  • The chord is calles Tritonus...:O

  • Squire P bass...

  • it's strange see them with such guitars....where are prs?!?!?

  • it's before your coming ... hehe

  • what model strat is mikael using? i would really like to know if you guys have any idea.

  • it's a stratocaster 72 model.

  • I was amused when I found out that even Mikael himself didn't know what chords he was playing :D This dude is all about music, not about theory... even though there's nothing wrong about knowing theory, I might add.

  • yeah good mixture of both does the trick

write songs from the heart, not head.

    \m/

  • lol that was priceless. the man said 'i dunno i just played it' lol. awesome.

  • he might know some theory such as the deceptive cadence. which is where the music goes a whole opposite direction towards the end of a section. like when he said "I like to put an 'off-the-wall' chord, something they dont expect". lol though he outlines tritones a lot :D, which is supposedly forbidden. but who cares.
