I believe the Cowsills actually met the "Partridge Family" on the set and talked with them about their story and how their show was. I like the Cowsills. Wish their were more groups like them.
I'm a huge PF fan so just adding to the statements about the show/Cowsills...
First of all Screen Gems wanted a "Shirley Jones vehicle" then the idea about The Cowsills came along. Shirley was always in it, with no audition. The producers said that they "were not crazy about all of the Cowsill kids" so they auditioned and cast for the children. LOVE The Cowsills too, so thanks for posting this!
I love this song from the show. I wish you could of got more footage of them but am not upset. I remember this show as a young girl. I was born in 1963 and remember it like it was yesterday and watched it all the time. Thanks for this great post on YouTube.
To hear the complete version of "Love American Style, turn over The Cowsills' final hit single, 1969's "Silver Thread and Golden Needles." There you'll find it in its full-length glory.
Part of the story apparently is they wanted to do it about the Cowsills. But wanted to replace Barbara Cowsill with Shirley Jones. From what I gather, things fell apart from there and only Shirley remained.
it didn't work out because the Cowsill kids insisted that their mother be able to play herself. Shirly jones was already cast in the part. neither side budged, so , the deal fell thru. the rest as they say, is history.
The real reason I heard was that the network wanted Shirley Jones to play their mother on the show, and they said no for they wanted to use their own mother.
Charles Fox, who wrote many ABC theme songs, wrote this, not the Cowsills.I'm reasonably sure that contract doings were responsible for Fox re-recording the song after the first season.
They sang the song for the first season of the show (1969) but it was replaced by another singing group for the remaining seasons. My understanding is that even when the shows from the first season are rerun, the later version is uses - and not the Cowsills. I'm GLAD to see them, apparently, touring again - and doing this song! Good for them!

I love how Susan just holds the guitar without playing it.

In the 90's, Billy Cowsill was in a great country rock band called "The Blue Shadows". Videos up now from their O.O.P. (out of print) albums.
Quality stuff!

The Cowsills were suppose to be the Original Partridge Family, but it did not work out for some reason! They also had close ties with ABC!

I recently went to a Cowsills concert and when they sang this song they said it was because they boys were to old for the parts.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
The wonderful African-Americans killed the singer, too. Down in New Orleans, they found him face down in the mud.

I can't hardly wait, myself. I pray that the DVD has the hour-long shows that contain the Cowsills' version of the song.
