But something important to point out is that Vietnam may have hurt America's willingness to engage in foreign operations but did negatively affect America's global power in the long term? Not really. We came out of the war chastened but no worse for ware. I think there are compelling arguments to be had that even a premature termination of operations in Afghanistan won't completely degrade America's global power. We're in too prime of a position geopolitically speaking.

This comment typifies my point about the barbarism of American culture. The American mind is disinclined towards nuance and shades of meaning. We think in absolutes, right is right and so on. While I admit we have done truly terribly things in history, I believe America has been a force for good the world over. The spread of democracy, for instance are all thanks to the U.S.A.

I'm not suggesting we should be given a free ride on "genocide." Since the Indian Wars in the 19th century, I am hard pressed to think of a time when America has engaged in genocide.

We've been going through a rough decade certainly and the nation has acted very immaturely but there is evidence to suggest that the United States will continue to remain one of the world's most powerful nations. As such, there is a great deal of good left for America to do overseas.

We Americans are, in terms of cultural maturity, not much removed from the hordes that swept away Rome.
