when it comes to music he's a freakin' genius! How the hell can he still be totally unknown outside the guitar community? I've known about him since the mid 80ies and still nobody almost that I talk to has even heard of him. Maybe he just want to play and that is what he does so why bother with changing a winning formula haha
I've seen alive such monsters as Derek Sherinian, Jordan Rudess, Andre Andersen, Don Airey, Geoff Downes etc. - but this is my favorite keyboard solo.
What a complete musician this guy is, keys, guitar, can sing he pretty much can master most complicated musical genres, He's too much understimated just Like Grew Howe
A new Tmac solo disc is goig to drop in early June. So far, what's known is that Donati and Marco Minneman are the drummers. Anyway, although I am a hardcore fan of Tony's, I never really liked this particular solo.
Vai is not the kind of person that fires musicians for being good, I think Tony just had some musical projects himself alongside, also the music chemistry and connection he has with Vai when playing is amazing
This is inspirational!!! When you have musicians playing behind you, of this caliber, it makes the head guy's job much easier. I feel sorry for the ppl hating on this video. I'm a keyboardist/pianist and this is simply an amazing display of musical talent. That's EXACTLY where I wanna be. He's a straight-up beast!!!
Tony Macalpine.. who is more technically acomplished in guitar than Steve Vai.. plays keyboards for him.. and Tony Macalpine who is more technically accomplished playing keys than Derek Sherinian.. plays guitar in his band Planet X..
T-Mac = one of the most underrated musicians in the history of the human race. People like him are what makes this rather unnecessarily complicated life worth living.
I love these uber-talented musicians so much. Every time I hear T, Vai, Paul Gilbert, Dimebag, Sheehan, Li, Petrucci, Malmsteen and the rest of the lot do their thing it brings a smile to my face.
Tony is too good to be in Steve Vai's band, this guy can shred on Guitar and Keyboards I used to own his album Maximum Security and it was a kick ass album
I am disappointed to see some negative comments. You are likely the same ones who can't play a C major scale except on their penis. This is a complex, creative, and emotional solo, a lot of shifts in modes and keys, superb scale runs, and not one sour note. Not to mention mastery of the synthesizer itself. I have all Tony's music and met him in person. For all you complainers, go and study piano and music theory for 30+ years to get to Tony's level, and until then shut your freakin' mouth.
@phjost Just because you can't hear the emotion in it doesn't mean it has no emotion. It is most certainly creative, for all music is based on just such an idea. Perhaps your negative view on it also bars you from feeling and truly hearing the complexes of the music. And for that matter, why does it HAVE to be something extremely complex to be musical?
There is more to music than super-complex phrases and such. Such a thing is meant for other musicians. For the average person, this is creative.
@StreetFighter2010 I agree with you, Tony is a fantastic composer and concertist 101% talent, his versatility as a guitar player and piano player shows it
Never mind about such a negative comments.I can appreciate Tony as a great musician in the world.I think that the people who understand goodness can just only appreciate his music.
There are some musicians in this world, who inspire you to pick up an instrument, learn it and master it. Then there are others that make you think "what's the point?", then wanna cut off your hands and never pick up ANYTHING again, let alone a guitar. Mastering one instrument, kudos, but two instruments?? That's just taking the piss! Thanks Tony, in 2 minutes flat, both my hands will be laying on the floor in a pool of blood,......that is if I can figure out how to cut the second one off!
whahahahahha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!you made it possible man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!that´s just about fantastic coment...I loved that !!!!!!!if you already play any instrument remember you have another "instrument" you´ve been mastering since you were a 13 years old kid...So, know you now that you mastered two instruments don´t bothers yourself about others musicians man...save your hands for your "Music"!!!!HHHAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!
Every song this guy does sounds like one big solo whether on guitar or piano, it seems like an awesome idea but it bores people after awhile, Tonys a great musician anyway.
For all those in the past comments talking about "guitar/keyboard" wankery. Do you say these things because you cannot do them? I just don't see the point in stifling musical creation and putting on limits of what you can do/should do. Being part of a band is nice but solos have always been a part of music. During the Classical and Romantic periods all the way to these very moment. Let people be creative without belittling them for showing their talent. MacAlpine is a fantastic pianist/guitarist
If so, youre like me! Plus I can make you very happy to inform you that after the break in 2004 Tony is back with Planet X and they are gonna record another disc later and a new world tour is waiting.
lack of harmonic structure? haha. dude, repetitive harmonic structure is boring, and for people who listen to the radio too much. this type of music is for people who listen, not hear. dont be so obsessed with the "hook".
I agree.....beside, there's no lack of harmonic structure, if one really listens can hear a lot of modulations. And it's not a skill that more simplistic players have
@eteokles3 lol WHAT! I take it your aren't a musician, for any musician will hear the harmonic structures he uses. The part before 3:30 has a lot of classical structure in it. Listen to the pedal tones, which he passes through different modes for awesome effect. There is structure, just not YOUR structure.
tony is a genius in both...if you havent heard of his band CAB ...its a fusion band and i am speechless tony on guitar and keys, bunny brunel on bass, dennis chambers drums!
Ha, ha, ha amazing: I was thinking that very same thought just a minute ago, having just listened to both artists' soloing on keyboards a moment ago. A tough call it would be. I prefer Tony overall, but I didlike this particular solo; for Vai disc I wish that he had've played something more rockin'.
Hey, Fkouch, does the F stand for faggot? How about maybe, before you start ripping on AMAZING musicians, try playing one yourself. Or at least put something up on Youtube that's even remotely comparable to Tony's skill. Your comments are tasteless, ass. Tony's got more taste and soul in his left finger than you ever will, you fag.
Then I wonder why Steve Vai, who is an extreme control freak and perfectionist, chose him for his band and has kept him in for almost ten years. Hmmm...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I agree. This is a grown up man wanking on the keyboard (and the guitar as well) like a teenager. This has nothing to du with mature musicianship. All flash, no substance.
Was that Steve Vai adjusting his pants at 2:51? I didn't need to see that.
