He is, like all the other Yeoman Warders, a former Warrant Officer in Her Majesty's Armed Forces, and is merely continuing the craft he perfected during his tenure as a Sergeant Major.
He demonstrates perfectly the calibre and quality of soldiery.
the beefeaters guard the tower of london and the crown jewels they got there nickname beefeater because in the past (im talking several hundred years ago) there rations of food would include a large portion of beef, there real name is Yeomen Warders. Today they are just a tourist attraction for telling storys to tourists they are not serious guardsmen like the real beefeaters of 300 years ago.
@Tyranus1 incorrect, in 2008 i believe a Royal Navy Chief Petty Officer became a Beefeater, not too sure he may of became one of the guys who wears a similar uniform to the beefeaters, the household staff or something, and hrmm the Admiralty no longer exists, it is the MOD(N) therefore all members of the Armed Forces are in the same boat so to speak when it comes to swearing allegiance as you put it.

That rule was changed in 1999 i believe, remember wikipedia is useless when written by a fool ;)
@Great88 i believe it is because they were the most experienced and professional men available to the king....and as payment for their experience they recieved the best meat in their rations which was beef. the rest of the army called the Beefeaters

To become a Yeoman warder you need to spend at least 22 years in the British armed forces.

@OiOi94 True, but the navy is ineligible since they swear their allegiance to the Admiralty, rather than to the Queen,
