I used to love this ident and jingle. Reminded me of Saturday aternoons when there was only sport on the other 2 channels and BBC2 would come on and have some Black and White film on, or Playaway... BBC2 was very much more reserved, back then. But, it kind of gave a sense of warmth and security. Or, maybe it's just me getting a bit nostalgic! If you were able to play BBC2 as it is today, back in 1979, you'd not recognise it. Progress, eh?
Bring this back - and while we are at it, lets bring bakc magnetic stick on weather symobols, cassettes etc, oh and more decent tv on 3 channels than all of the 999 we have now!
I like the 2 logo they had between 1991 and 2007 and I do think it's better than this one. However this one is MUCH better than the TWO logo that came after that. Awful and dreadful.
I wouldn't say the TWO logo was dreadful, but they could have been capable to do something interesting with the TWO (what the hell am I talking about, I wasn't born when the TWO existed.)
The 2's from 1991-2001 were brilliant though, and probably go alongside the Central cake and the Channel 4 blocks for best set of idents in history
Though having said that I wasn't even born when this was shown! xD
But looking back on older idents is interesting, especially ITV's regional ones. When I watched YTV all the time when I was young. The old C4 blocks are my favourite though. Bold and primary, great piece of graphic design.
The BBC2 Stripy logo was designed by Oliver Elmes of the BBC Computer woorkshop. It was done by a Digitalized Computer Animation. This one lasted from mid-1979 to March 30, 1986. This was the first digitalized identification of the BBC.

Actually there is a model of the actual one used and it is housed in Television Centre in London and there is a picture of it on TV-Ark's web site. It actually comprised of 30 or so discs which spun in alternative directions and then reformed again to form the "2".

This anticipated the future.

Such a shame that no one knows the exact date when this was first introduced.

A nice unpretentious animated logo, a cheerful little jingle, and an authoritative yet welcoming "Good arrrfternoon".
Good ol' days, were they. Ah, memories.

Wow - I was expecting 'Monkey' or 'Not the Nine o'Clock News' to come on after that...

Yes this is nice. You dont that kind of straight-up identity on TV anymore. Its all pretentious twattery.

Nice little jingle to accompany this simple, yet charming computer generated "2" graphic.
In my humble opinion, this is the definitive BBC 2 ident.

What about that spinning one?

I agree!

I heard that the music was only played during the start of the days schedual. I reckon they should have played it all the time.
racrmimbpsvc 3 years ago
I remember the logo clearly, but it was always played to silence (or voiceover) when I saw it. I don't recall *ever* having heard that music.
Was it ditched early on, or did they only ever use it occasionally?
NotATube 3 years ago
Yes, apparently it was ditched in 1983 when Daytime on Two started with the introduction of a BBC2 logo against an orange and yellow background.
cwilliams1976 2 years ago
Strange, if they were still using it as late as 1983, I'm sure I'd have heard it often enough for it to still ring a bell...
NotATube 2 years ago
That was 1986 actually.
