We developed the ring-finger habit as a sign of commitment in multiple cultures, and it just stuck as social heritage within the world culture. well think of the fingers generation wise. the thumb tends to be the thickest of the fingers meaning its the oldest ( so the parents would get that finger), the next 3 fingers are roughly the same size so they are the next generation. lastly the pinky is the thinnest of all the fingers so that is the youngest generation.
