Então parabéns a coragem do Gilmour!
Love it - what a great haunting jazz version. Has anyone heard Alison Moyet doing a similar version on her Album Voice? Brilliant. Not only does it introduce great operatic melodies to wider listeners, but it creatively invents the old standards for the opera audience also. Brill!
To suggest that Gilmour's voice is "bloody awful" is, of course, subjective; however, the notion that "this aria should be left to the experts" is pure elitist snobbery. By performing this piece -- and quite beautifully, in my opinion -- Gilmour has exposed an entire new audience to a tune they might otherwise never have experienced. And that's what music is supposed to be: an experience. Not just for tiara and bow tie set, but everyone.
@MrGJHIII I completely agree with U. Long live Pink Floyd! THey are simply the best and we are very lucky to hear them whenever we want....They bring the best in me!

I am a true opera fan as well as an rock 'n roll lover and The Floyd is one of my favorite band and IMHO, this is a perfect encounter of these two worlds and a proof that there are only two sorts of music, the good one and the bad one! Gilmour (what a genious by the way) has certainly not the voice of Lawrence Brownlee or Alfredo Kraus but he does not pretend to vie with them! He just want to transmit an emotion and he perfectely does!
Il chante bien français... on peut pas en dire autant de Matthew Bellamy ( cf: I belong to you). cela dit j'adore Muse aussi. quel plaisir d'écouter David.
I still believe I hear Hidden under the palm trees His tender voice and sound Like a song of a dove. Oh night enchantress Divine rapture Oh delightful thought Mad intoxication, sweet dream!
@juegas I still believe I hear Hidden under the palm trees His tender voice and sound Like a song of a dove. Oh night enchantress Divine rapture Oh delightful thought Mad intoxication, sweet dream! Charmant Souvenir!
i know lot of people dont like his version, but i personally love it! it´s amazing, i love his voice, his feeling...maybe for some ppl i can be stupid, but i like it more then the opera version
I personally don't like this - besides the cello - but if it can lead people to listening to Villazon or Gigli then it is great. I guess that is rarely the case though.
@maxhansendk that's the difference between writing "this version" or "this piece".
Gilmour can touch people's heart ( do you really need proofs for that?).
It's not because you can't hear him that he can't sing (that would be a bit pretentious...).I agree that vocally speeking alfredo kraus fits more and I prefer his version but I prefer gilmour's one to a lot of "proper tenor's" that are supposed to be outstanding... my opinion and only mine, your opinion and only your's... be subjective ;)
@JuanpaLibo Fucking genious...hmmmm maybe youa are right if I go by the words meaning. He could very possibly be a great lover (or "fucking" genious as you put it ;-)
@maxhansendk I disagree totally with you ! Are you a bit narrow minded ? I am not a psecific fan of David Gilmour but I am a fan of this version . This brought me to listen to the other ones ;-)
@maxhansendk It is sad that you will never know the brilliance of David. you are missing out if you think that just cause he is not an opera singer that this is a horrible perfomance. Great music surpasses silly genre titles and is just great music. He is not trying to be an opera singer, or a pop singer. if you only like opera and classical, don't watch a david gulmour performance, unless your trying to open up and enjoy other things... which you are clearly not.
@maxhansendk I totaly agree with you. Listen to the version of N. Gedda. You hear a real trained tenor who knows what he is doing instead of singing a song is a lower version because else he can't make it. I really dislike this version.
@maxhansendk "Please don´t ever do this again mister Gilmour. Stick to meaningless popsongs that simple people enjoy when they drink lots of alcohol..." this is your quite. David Gilmour is the voice and the guitarist of Pink Floyd.
@Rozq87 OK, point taken. I thought Pink Floyd was buried and forgotten since long time... My mind only "recalls" some song about hatred towards school and teachers when I hear the name Pink Floyd. Song is childish with "naive lyrics" that lazy children love because they don´t like to work at school to accomplish succes.
That kind of children usually end up with boring jobs and poor pay or unemployment. Because of that they turn to alcohol and drugs...
@maxhansendk Well I can understand that original is a lot better than this but give him a break. He wanted to share his passion with the world. He usually performs his own stuff. As for the another brick in the wall you didn't get the message it would seem. The song is about mind control rather than about education per se.
@Rozq87 All education is about mind control! And those pupils who don´t want to do the work required at school - They usually end up like "losers"! They may become drug addicts, criminals (spend much time in jail) or (at best)
consistantly very poor. Their parents often share the same fate of poverty and lazy attitude towards work.
Pupils who work hard at school - Are usually very succesful in life!
I truly believe this "Another brick in the wall song" have destroyed many young peoples lifes.
for fuck sake this is incredible music and unbelievable performance from a musician who has achieved everything and still expresses himself the original way
there is absolutely no reason for thumbs down, only thumbs up!!
To all those who like authenticity, and spit on anything else; listen guys, most of people don't listen to Opera, and if it wasn't of david Gilmour, i would have never heard of this beautiful song. I listened after to Gigli, Rossi, Vanzo, Kraus, Domingo and others. And I could appreciate every version of this song.
This version is certainly unique, soft and touching. Gilmour has an accessible voice for most of people, we are not talking about opera fans here! So thank you David for this.
O nuit enchanteresse! Divin ravissement! O souvenir charmant! Folle ivresse! doux rêve! Charmant sduvenir!
Well almost all the comments written in French were positive (two dozen at least) so I wouldn't take it too seriously. Not everyone likes everything. I think it's great.
Always a disappointment when people get snobby about their music. In the context of the concert this is a wee gem. But you'd have to watch the lot to know that wouldn't you? Thank you Kamran10 for putting this up. Vive DG.
people must acept that the body has a limited time (at least, now). It's double sad becose to listed this old voice, like trying to scream but can't becose his Gerontologist didn't recomend it
It's like any bloke in a karaoke pub who would give a try at this song for the first time; if you want to keep intact your high opinion of Gilmour's art don't go listen to the same song by Tino Rossi and Beniamino Gigli.
How can people actually like this? It's like watching a train wreck in slow motion. Pitiful and insulting. There is not one single redeeming thing in this performance.
Lol... This should be a joke... Pop singers should never try to sing opera... It becomes this...
For the others who like this song from him, please try to listen from Lawrence Brownlee or Rolando Villazon...

Why not scream the the entire melody? It would make a "heartacheing" performance. Or, better still, make a version with vuvuzelas?
Na, Bizet is "rolling in his grave" because people who can´t sing - Do this beautiful song great injustice!!
maxhansendk 1 year ago
@maxhansendk that's the difference between writing "this version" or "this piece".
Gilmour can touch people's heart ( do you really need proofs for that?).
It's not because you can't hear him that he can't sing (that would be a bit pretentious...).I agree that vocally speeking alfredo kraus fits more and I prefer his version but I prefer gilmour's one to a lot of "proper tenor's" that are supposed to be outstanding... my opinion and only mine, your opinion and only your's... be subjective ;)

The worst verison of this song you will ever hear - is this one!
David Gilmore is practically commiting "rape" on this song!
It was never meant to be sung by a weak voice riddled with mistakes.
All in all, this is as bad a version (hopefully) you will ever come across.
I am sure Bizet is rolling around in his grave absolutely disgusted...
maxhansendk 1 year ago
@maxhansendk
What is your problem ?
You are very narrow minded !
Aramis512 1 year ago
@Aramis512 Why destroy a beautiful song?
"Fanboys" will of course defend David Gilmours "raping" of Bizets beautiful song.
This is an operatic masterpiece-Meant to be sung by well educated tenors.
It makes my so sad people think this is how this song is normally sung...
Please don´t ever do this again mister Gilmour. Stick to meaningless popsongs that simple people enjoy when they drink lots of alcohol...
maxhansendk 1 year ago
@maxhansendk I disagree totally with you ! Are you a bit narrow minded ? I am not a psecific fan of David Gilmour but I am a fan of this version . This brought me to listen to the other ones ;-)
Aramis512 1 year ago
@maxhansendk It is sad that you will never know the brilliance of David. you are missing out if you think that just cause he is not an opera singer that this is a horrible perfomance. Great music surpasses silly genre titles and is just great music. He is not trying to be an opera singer, or a pop singer. if you only like opera and classical, don't watch a david gulmour performance, unless your trying to open up and enjoy other things... which you are clearly not.
Adamluman 1 year ago
@maxhansendk I totaly agree with you. Listen to the version of N. Gedda. You hear a real trained tenor who knows what he is doing instead of singing a song is a lower version because else he can't make it. I really dislike this version.

@maxhansendk Wow your life must be very boring if you say that Pink Floyd creates meaningless pop songs. Do you do stand ups as well?

@Rozq87 Where did I mention Pink Floyd?
maxhansendk 1 year ago
@maxhansendk "Please don´t ever do this again mister Gilmour. Stick to meaningless popsongs that simple people enjoy when they drink lots of alcohol..." this is your quite. David Gilmour is the voice and the guitarist of Pink Floyd.
Rozq87 1 year ago
@Rozq87 OK, point taken. I thought Pink Floyd was buried and forgotten since long time... My mind only "recalls" some song about hatred towards school and teachers when I hear the name Pink Floyd. Song is childish with "naive lyrics" that lazy children love because they don´t like to work at school to accomplish succes.
That kind of children usually end up with boring jobs and poor pay or unemployment. Because of that they turn to alcohol and drugs...
Hmm...Maybe school is important after all.
maxhansendk 1 year ago
@maxhansendk Well I can understand that original is a lot better than this but give him a break. He wanted to share his passion with the world. He usually performs his own stuff. As for the another brick in the wall you didn't get the message it would seem. The song is about mind control rather than about education per se.
Cheers

@Rozq87 All education is about mind control! And those pupils who don´t want to do the work required at school - They usually end up like "losers"! They may become drug addicts, criminals (spend much time in jail) or (at best)
consistantly very poor. Their parents often share the same fate of poverty and lazy attitude towards work.
Pupils who work hard at school - Are usually very succesful in life!
I truly believe this "Another brick in the wall song" have destroyed many young peoples lifes.

cives 1 year ago
really, fuck you thumbs-down-people..
what more do you want...?
for fuck sake this is incredible music and unbelievable performance from a musician who has achieved everything and still expresses himself the original way
there is absolutely no reason for thumbs down, only thumbs up!!

I had to laugh at the comments. Here's Gilmour being flamed for attempting to sing in French by Frogs attempting to write in English.
Their spelling and format is much worse than his singing.

Always a disappointment when people get snobby about their music. In the context of the concert this is a wee gem. But you'd have to watch the lot to know that wouldn't you? Thank you Kamran10 for putting this up. Vive DG.

It's like any bloke in a karaoke pub who would give a try at this song for the first time; if you want to keep intact your high opinion of Gilmour's art don't go listen to the same song by Tino Rossi and Beniamino Gigli.
