2nd part of my comment, I was cut-off: playing on/off for a year, that I may have missed a few important things.
Would it be alright to use some kind of powder, at least on the backside of the guitar neck? I own a satin finished 2009 Strat.
Thanks for steering me in the right direction Scott, on the Polywebs while in the early stage of learning the guitar. Should be the most important step. "using Polyweb strings".
@StratCountry I really prefer no finish at all on the back of my necks. You don't have anything to slow you down that way. So, if you're playing on an axe that you plan on KEEPING, the best thing to do is to simply sand off the finish from the back of the neck
@groovydjs Appreciate it Scott. I never would have guessed that one, a person who has been in the music industry like you, would know these tricks of the trade.
I better keep the finish on, hopefully over time, it will wear down to slicker a feel.
@StratCountry My pleasure. It will take a couple of decades unless you are playing 6 nights a week and 6 sets a night. That stuff is on there good. What you might do is just grab a Mexican neck off of Ebay for a hundred bucks, sand the hell out of it and if and when it's time to sell the Strat...the original neck will be in PERFECT condition when you bolt it back on there.
I appreciate your quick response Scott, you are right about the Polywebs being the slickest strings out there, I noticed the difference right away. For some reason, when I get the slightest amount of moisture on my fingers & thumb, they really grab a-hold of the maple fret board & the backside of the neck, even lightly holding the neck. I'm finding it difficult playing some of Brent Mason's "old school" double-stop slides. I imagine being a green horn on electric guitar,.....
@StratCountry That's when the neck starts to feel good to, when that finish on the front of the maple fingerboard finally comes off. A few folks have gotten it right and have made the guitars with no finish anywhere on the neck or the fretboard. Not too many are bright enough to know to do it that way sadly enough.
Hi Scott, just a quick question. Is there a way to make the Polywebs a bit slipperier without harming them. I really like the feel & performance of these new strings.
@StratCountry Hi my friend. These are about the slickest strings out there already. I've never though about it, but I am thinking about it right now, I know how the Polywebs are constructed and honestly, I would say that dipping each of your left hand fingertips in Vaseline, then play the guitar and let it do what it naturally does. Spread it out so thin and it should do wonders for what you are wanting from it. It will not break down the properties in the Polyweb coating either. Cheers.
@TheMAJofficial Yes, they can start the "fraying" process quite easily. The tune o matic is just such a HORRIBLE bridge for so many reasons. If you ever use a Bigsby trem with a tune o matic, forget it. You may as well be playing your stings with a butter knife. That combination will shred any Elixir string in seconds.
@TheMAJofficial I actually fully intend to. I've got so much dirt on them via my own experience, but better yet, tons and tons of stories from others from all of the guitar forums and videos, lawsuits from them breaking people's instruments and getting away with not having to pay for it because of the money that they can throw at the lawyers and judges etc. They are some dirty ass folks. The majority of their gear they sell as NEW, returns from Musician's Friend. Not Cool.
That sounds amazing! I never knew that they could do that lol. I ordered my guitar on musicians friend today and I made sure that I had a set of polyweb's in that order lol. I freakin love those strings! The way that they feel on your fingers is great and I can play all the time now without my strings rusting like they used to cause like I said I live in Hawaii so the humidity kills the strings but these things are still holdin up. My friend just got a new Les Paul and I said "Make sure you pic
@xxZMANXX44 Yeah, the Polywebs are truly amazing. I get to Hawaii quite a lot and know about that humidity for sure. I can say that I fully understand why the Ukulele, with it's nylon strings are so popular. You can't kill what is already dead sounding. Nothing to rust with them either. So, the Uke players have it made for sure. I would think that the Polyweb strings would be the #1 selling strings in the islands.
@xxZMANXX44 100% for sure. I've VERY much looking forward to trying them out and putting them through the ringer. I will totally waste one set by putting them in salt water and then tossing them in the sun to dry, let them stay outside for a week, put them on an axe and see how they do. REGULAR strings will snap before you get them tuned to pitch after doing that. Polywebs sound like new and I can play on them for 5 years with no tone loss and no loss in their life. AMAZING stuff and true!
I checked down at the music center and they didn't have really any bass strings because they were sold out so I didn't get to see if they had those but I do know that if you are looking for the acoustic or electric polyweb's you can get them on musicians friend. They also have banjo polyweb's there to. 👍
@xxZMANXX44 Super sweet! Plus Elixir have just released 2 new kinds of bass strings that will be available very soon that are "Supposedly" going to put the Polywebs to shame. I'll be trying them both for sure!
@TheMAJofficial Yeah, the bone nuts are for the cork sniffers that think that they are the thing to have. They make no sense at all to me, but to each their own. That's why they make the roller nuts too, for folks like me who enjoy sustain, tone and being in tune. Little things like that are important to me. lol
I have a question about what you said about how nothing but the pick ups matter when the electric is plugged in. The question is "does that still apply to acoustic electric? Or does the wood still matter?"
@xxZMANXX44 If you are using a Piezo pickups system that is used on 98% of guitars, then NO, the wood on the guitar doesn't matter when it's plugged in. In the case of some other kinds of preamps where you have the Piezo pickup under the bridge and a built in microphone also, then it starts to make a difference pretty big time, especially if you are using a lot of the mic signal over the pickup signal. But the majority of those mics will feedback in a HURRY in a live situation.
On a video on gibson's YouTube page the CEO talks about how pick ups work because they are magnets and that the string ringing changes the magnetic field and that's how your guitar gets it's sound. but then later in the video he talks about how the wood makes a huge effect on tone. All he ended up doing was contradicting himself
@TheMAJofficial So true, I know the guy you are talking about. He is a total moron and clearly only WORKS there, he doesn't know how a guitar WORKS. lol So typical of pretty much all guitar companies. They are COMPANIES, not guitar makers with any sense of...well, anything.
Yea they sell them for about $10. I was surprised when I saw all of them. I should have checked to see if they had the bass polywebs. I am going back on march 2nd so I will go check an see and I will get back to you on that.
@xxZMANXX44 Yeah, let me know if they have any of the Bass Polywebs. They stopped making them a while back. It would be interesting to see if any are on the rack still.
I went down to the easy music center where I live to check if they still had the polywebs and I looked on the shelf and they had rows and rows and rows of them lol. I was like " o think god!" they had tons of the polywebs for the electric and tons of them for the acoustic so I think I will be good for a while lol.
@xxZMANXX44 WOW, that is a first! Elixir usually won't put the Polywebs in stores. They must have custom ordered them. I'd hold on to those folks. I hope they are selling them at a good price to you.
A note on the discounted polyweb strings: Like you said no one who is an actual musician works in the high ranks of a music company. The objective of any business are profits. Elixer's CEO probably discontinued them cause they last so long and were cutting their revenue.
@goredeathrot LMAO, that's great! You actually counted them. Thanks for the tally. I actually intended on doing that one day. lol You are probably right, nobody will buy another set if they won't wear out.
hey polyweb acoustics much better than electrics for me definitely hear a bigger difference over time than the electrics. plus they are the most comfortable strings ive played, big plus for me. i dont think my polyweb g,b,strings have rusted i just think theyve gotten dirty they still sound new. i dont know maybe im just thinking stupid shit as usual. lol
@Fkepler2 Yeah, just give them a shot, like you have, see if they are for you at all. They are not for everybody. So, if they work for you on anything, you are one step ahead of the game.
@stonedrocker666 Wow, you have to have treated them really badly for the coating to come off. After a few hundred sets, I've never had that happen and have never broken a single one of them. I wish I could be there to see it.
Yea I would to but right now I'm not very sure. I will be going to the music store in about a month for a new guitar and I will definitely see if they still have them. I'm sure they do but I guess it is always better to be safe then sorry.
@xxZMANXX44 True, you can rarely count on your music store to have what you need. Every time you need 4 of something, they will always have 3. Strange how that works. lol
Hi! There's a moment where you kinda contadict yourself. First you say Fender didn't got it right at the first time with the Broad/Telecaster, because of the wood that's been used (among other things). But then you say that once the guitar is plugged, woods doesn't matter. So what was wrong in using pine?
@remiremouk Because pine dents easier than any other wood and there was no truss rod......so, that soft wood just bent over like a two dollar hooker when you strung it up. So, they had to go with different woods. So, that would be what I was talking about. Not the sound at all. Your English is better than most of the folks that live here. Come on over and let me pick some to go over there and take your place. lol
Ok I get it, so then the choice of wood is only important for the look, and the way it's gonna last throughouht the years?
But I noticed that different guitars with the same electronics (let's say Les Paul Junior and SG Junior, all P90 equiped) does not have the exact same sound, it's subtle but one has more depth, the other is a bit more agressive. Why is that?
@remiremouk Yeah, pretty much. The reason for the difference in sound would pretty much come down to the pickups. No 2 pickups are going to sound exactly alike. It could be do to a couple less windings on the pickup. A slightly different strength of the particular piece of magnet that was stuck under the pickup. All kinds of things like that will make for that subtle difference. You can play 20 guitars that are supposed to be IDENTICAL, and all of them will sound different. Nature of the beast.
@TheMAJofficial You would think so huh? lol There are hundreds and hundreds of comments that I won't publish because the MAJORITY of folks have way less than common sense when it comes to their responses. So, they just get blocked for the good of all and their comments erased before they are even posted. lol
Ok thank you. Another reason I use the Elixir is because I have lived in hawaii for 2 and a half years now and when I brought my electric guitar over here the strings rusted in 2 weeks because of the humidity so I went and got the polyweb's and they have lasted for about 3 months.
@xxZMANXX44 Very good point! I get to the Islands a couple times per year and have noticed that all the strings on all the instruments (other than the ukes of course) are always fried or rusted out in all of the music stores. I would think that the shelves would be stocked heavily with the Elixirs.
I use the polyweb's for my electric guitar and they hold up great! I was wondering if you think for an intermediate guitar player like myself, can use other strings like Ernie Ball or something like that? I was wondering because if the store stops selling them where I live then I wouldn't really know what to get. I have a Yamaha apx500ll that has the standard strings and i haven't got to the store to get my polyweb's yet. So if they don't have them anymore I was wondering if I could use Ernie B
@xxZMANXX44 Yes, you can use Ernie Ball strings. They will suck, rust, go dead and break, but you can use whatever you want. If your store doesn't carry Elixirs, order them online, they are cheaper that way anyway. That just means that your store sucks because they don't support their customers. Then, don't support them by giving them your money. You don't have to pay tax online either. You don't have to pay for gas online. Just wasting money when you leave the house for such things.
Kudos groovydjs! Another straightforward, highly informative video that rolls over all the funky string-/fretboard-caring-myths like an Abrams. Couldn't agree more about the Elixir Polyweb, of which I can luckily say that they are still available for the accoustics (even though here in Europe them bastids charge you some $20 per package). Only strings I have found to come close to the Polywebs is the Yamaha FS50BT. Not lasting as long as Elixirs but good sounding. All the best for 2012!
@klcbsoft Happy new year my friend! Yeah, I have never understood why they don't offer the same products to everybody in the world for the same price if you are willing to pay the shipping. It simply doesn't make any sense to me. lol
Also good point on rosewood vs maple boards. Very true. Having worked with both types of timber myself (although not on guitars) rosewood has a more open grain to it, which would allow dirt and crap to get in, whereas maple has a very tight grain, much more resistant to contamination. Treated with a high quality finish, it's a good way to go. Also, Rustins Plastic Coating is a terrific coating to use. It's tricky to work with, but when cured, cut and polished, it's as shiny and hard as glass.
@Fenner1976 Very good points. Thank you so very much for the post. It's rare that folks explain the correct reasons in an understandable way instead of just yelling garbage out. I really appreciate your contribution. Thank you!
@groovydjs forgive me if im wrong, but regarding the rosewood board, when you play properly, your strings dont actually touch the fret board. So how is your fret board getting the strings dirty?
@Benderbot50 No, you are not wrong at all and I'll be more than happy to explain it to you. Your FINGERS touch your fretboard, your fingers pick up all of that grunge on the fretboard and shove the dirt that is on that fretboard into the windings of your strings. So, with each and every string bend you do, your fingers are indeed touching your fretboard and getting even dirtier.....so, you see where I'm going with this. But, it's a whole different ball game if you play fretless bass too.
@groovydjs No worries :) It's really refreshing to see someone who says what they really think, in a logical balanced way. Everything makes sense! I totally agree on the idea for a pine bodywood. Pine looks good as a bookcase, but not on a guitar body! Way too soft, too much natural resin in it and it dents way too easily. This is one of the best opinion videos out there...if not THE best. Over here, just about the easiest place for Elixir strings is Amazon, from what I've seen so far.
@Fenner1976 Exactly, bookshelves is the way to go for a nice, easy way to use up some cheap pine. There's a reason they stopped making them from pine. Now that everybody wants an earlier and earlier knockoff of the vintage stuff, they have now gone back to the beginnings where the process failed and needed to be fixed. But all the kids want the earliest "reissue" they can find. It is somehow a status symbol for them. That's fine, except it will be unplayable and beat to hell in a month. lol
@groovydjs Very true. Seems to me that it's a total waste of money in buying a very soft bodied pine guitar just because of the reissue "vintage" connection...when in truth, it's a false economy. Hardwoods are the only way to go really. I would rather have a hardwood bodied guitar for less money than a more expensive pine one, which won't be anywhere near as tough. Guitars covered in dents aren't good! Beautiful looking PRS by the way. Everything you've said here, makes perfect sense.
@Fenner1976 We have a winner here folk! You are dead on and actually understand! I have faith in guitarists again. lol Really. It's so hard to get people to understand these things. They all just fall for the latest trends and get raped. Thanks for the PRS comment. Now that is an amazing axe. I can't put it down at all. It's worth every cent.
@groovydjs Many thanks! No worries. What you're saying makes total sense to me. I can't afford to spend money on a soft guitar which probably isn't going to last anywhere near as long as a hardwood bodied instrument. Those spray-painted black strings are a laugh! People are being ripped off by things which look cool..but aren't! I'm going to try my best to get hold of some Polywebs for a new electric lefty (sometime soon hopefully). Serious thanks for this video...it's a massive help :)
@Fenner1976 I'm so glad to have been some help to you. I don't want anybody to get ripped off. With the internet, we at least have a tiny bit of power to warn people of what is going on in the retail world (good or bad) and let them decide for themselves. You have a good head on your shoulders and realize the difference between nice and nasty. lol. Let me know what you end up with! Cheers.
@groovydjs Many thanks my friend :) For me, it's very refreshing to see a totally unbiased & honest review of things which work...and things which don't! It's sad to see that Elixir are phasing-out their Polywebs. They will end up shooting themselves in the foot I think. With my situation, over here in the UK, options are pretty limited for left handers, as stores don't stock many lefties. although I've narrowed it down to either an Ibanez SA series...or a Pacifica. Thanks again :)
@Fenner1976 Thank you very much! Yeah, a big shot in the foot for sure!. Which Pacifica are you looking at? They've made some really great ones. It doesn't really matter with Yamaha if they are the Japanese ones or the models from Taiwan, both factories produce some real great guitars.
@groovydjs No worries :) I'm ashamed to admit that it's been about 20 years since I last played, & it's time I got back into it again after a (very) long break! I've been carefully reading-up on reviews for guitars in my price range before I buy anything & the Pacifica 112 always scores high results. I'm a bit of a traditionalist & prefer natural & burst finishes. I've owned Yamaha instruments before, & they've all been excellent.
@Fenner1976 Yeah, they have always been amazing instruments that have been overlooked over and over again for the "Flavor of the month" guitars that come and go. Yamaha is always a safe bet for sure.
Its up my friend. I put it up last night so lol. Let me no what u think of it & even the teaser of all the cases of ur Polyweb string lol. I do the comparison btween the 2 sets so. Its groovy & u r to Scott. U want a PB & J sandwich?
Scott my man!. Im getting ready to post a video up about the Nanoweb strings. This is week 3 & they r still holding up quite well & so. I wanted 2 update these strings & compare the 2 kinds u no the Polywebs VS Nanowebs so. Like I said We'll C how long they last. I even put some fun stuff n it, picken on u about u having all ur elixir strings & wont share lol. Let me no what u think of this video alright? Its kind a funny tho
@jeraldsrestoration Awesome my man. Let me know when it's up. I can't wait to see it. I went to Elixir's You Tube page today and noticed that a few of my friends were asking them about discontinuing the Polywebs, they are still denying it of course. Told them that they had some exciting, new things on the horizon that they couldn't mention. Also told them that they 100% would not be bring back the Polyweb bass strings no matter what. So, that's a dead issue for sure. US "We want them" Them "NO"!
Hey groovydjs thanks for the video, it was very informative and learned a lot from it. I just bought about 10 sets of elixir polyweb strings. Ofcourse before I watched this video I had just bought some nanoweb medium gauge for acoustic. Hopefully they will be okay, but if not will stick with the polywebs.I don't tend to sweat as much as you or some other players though ( lucky me lol can't believe you had to change your strings so often ) thanks again for the video man.
@AmericanWitchDoctor Awesome my friend. Thank you so much for watching! I really hope you enjoy the Elixirs. Without the deamon sweat, you should be fine and dandy with either type then. They both prevent everyday gunk from settling between the windings of your strings and prevent the rusting too. So, I'm sure you'll like them. Please report back in with your personal findings on them for the rest of the folks that stumble across this thread if you would.
@stonedrocker666 Cool, you are on the right track. You can always raise them to your tonal taste, but more than 1/3 the way between your pickguard or mounting rings, then they will start having bad things to do with your tone, sustain etc. If you use pickups such as Lace Sensors or EMG's, then you don't have to worry about such things, you can put them anywhere you want.
@stonedrocker666 You would get a little more since the strings would be in contact with more actual mass with the rollers than they are with the little, knife edge saddles on the tune-o-matic. You'll get 10X more sustain by simply lowering your pickups a little bit. More than any other single thing you could possibly do.
Hey there, I own 2 Samick guitars, a copy of the Gibson ES-335 (from the 90s I guess) and a brand new LN10 "Linda". Both are GREAT guitars, very well built and with good pickups IMHO. I own japanese vintage stuff from late 70s early 80s (Aria Pro II, Westone Concord I, Greco Strat), that are impressive and really enjoyable, but my Samicks also are on top of my tiny collection.
@raphory Very cool, it sounds like you've got it all covered. Samick is the number one guitar maker in all the world. (By volume). They make the best guitars made and the worst guitars made. It is all 100% dictated by the companies that have Samick build them for them and for what kind of money. So, when they build the guitars for Wal-Mart), Samick only puts ten bucks worth of materials into them and does what they can. Then they make the ULTRA HIGH END stuff for folks too. So, Great Company.
I been using the Nanowebs 4 about a week so far & they so far r not going ded yet. Im like u. Got that major sweat. Im testing them out 2 C if I can rust them lol. It does say anti rust coating but. I go back n that music store. Im gonna look at the box cus i dont want that 2 happen again. If they give me the nanowebs I probably wont take them. But my red axe has the Polys so. & a few other guitars so. They will last me 4ever huh? Im doen the Nanoweb trial lol yeah. We'll c Polywebs r the best!!
@jeraldsrestoration Make sure you let me know how the Nanowebs hold up next to the Polywebs. I'm sure it's different for everybody, so I want to see how it works out for you my man.
@jeraldsrestoration Make sure you let me know how the Nanowebs hold up next to the Polywebs. I'm sure it's different for everybody, so I want to see how it works out for you my man.
@ThreeDaysAwayBand I have a couple of cases of them (nearly 300 sets). You won't find any of them anywhere else. They are gone forever. They had the best bass strings in the world and they quit making them. Morons. lol
@wessel7076 Yeah, music stores suck. You can get them on Musician's Friend online or on Ebay. They are called Polywebs. Elixir are trying to hide the Polywebs from everybody and the music store owners are probably not bright enough to know that the original Polywebs even exist since Elixir isn't telling them about them. Pretty sad huh? lol
@skizophrenicpeanut LOL, take what you will from my little rants, try them for yourself and use what works for YOU. Not everything I say is to everybody's taste for sure. But....it's a better place to start than most. lol Many thanks my friend!
hey scott my polywebs have already rusted and went dull on the unwound strings meaning the g,b and e strings. are they not coated? doesnt seem worth it if it only lasts on the wound strings. :\
@Fkepler2 Hi my friend. The plain strings are 100% coated. I've never once (with any brand of string or the age of the string) had a dead or dull plain string. That's a brand spanking new claim there my friend. Rust on some string? Sure, I've never had one even slightly tarnish on any Elixir set before. Not even the ones that are years and years old and have never once been wiped. I would honestly say that I would have to see that to even start to believe it.
Someone asked me to try WD-40 on some regular strings to bring them back to life. I gave the Tele with the dead strings and the Gibson Grabber bass with the dead strings from this video a good wipe down on all strings with a butt load of WD-40. They were nice and greasy afterwards. No extra life was noticed at first. I wiped them down after about 5 minutes with a dry cheese cloth and still nothing. I let them sit for another 3 days now. Still dead as can be. So, WD-40 just makes them slick.
@groovydjs The video was actually very informative, i stayed tuned for the whole 48 min. But I was curious about something though, I saw in a store the other day Titanium coated strings. I know that the Elixirs are good, But I was wondering what, if anything, titanium coating does for strings. & Thank you for sharing both your knowlage and your collection with us. :)
@MrBac755 The titanium is from the regular Ernie Ball Coated strings. They put what they call a titanium drip (smaller than a 1/4 drop of water on the wrapping around the ball end of the strings to try to keep your balls from falling off. lol Sad, but true. I can't remember one single time that I've ever had the ball end fall off of a string, but that is all that whole marketing mess is about. Nothing more.
@groovydjs Sorry i've taken so long to get back, and wow, is that really it? I've had strings break on me in 50 ways and never has the ball broken on me. & i used to use normal non titanium ernie balls. lol. Thank you for telling me, i was jw because i thought maybe there may have been a sound diffrence or something. But thank you again. :)
@MrBac755 My total pleasure my friend. Since I got me a superb magnifying glass and am now able to see and cure any burrs on the bridge saddles....no more string breaking. It's a beautiful thing.
Hey Scott, great info on the needed video. Took your tip on the Polywebs & strung them on my Standard Strat w/humbuckers, strings feel great, nice bright tone, almost sounding like a Tele right now.
@StratCountry Awesome my friend. Thanks for trying them out and please leave an update on them when they are like a few weeks along and beyond so that some folks will have more folks than just me to believe in those strings. Twang on!
@Fkepler2 I have all kinds of recommendations on bass amps. Let me know what kind of tone you're looking for, price range (not that it really matters...but I can better get you into the seat of something more comfortable that way). The thing is that a single 10" speaker in the correctly designed cabinet will out perform a wall of anything else and by using only 1/10 the wattage. So, how loud does it really have to be since it's going to be pumped through the PA anyway etc.
@groovydjs price between 200-500 dollars. tone like jpj geddy lee you know good all around cleans and a nice od, a good punchy tone, good for slap, just an all around amp. i have a jazz bass type bass.
@Fkepler2 Cool, easy enough. Grab you a used Hartke setup. Get the 3500 head and a 4X10 Hartke cabinet and you are golden. The tightest bass sound around. Punchy as all hell, great definition and no mud bass at all. The bigger the actual speaker cone, the slower the cone moves and the floppier your sound gets. So, 15" and 18" speakers just suck balls for a great bass tone. That's why the Ampeg SVT rig has been legendary for so long. Those 8X10" speakers are just so very tight sounding.
@groovydjs hey scott ill send you a pic of my strings tomorrow so that you can see for yourself. for the bass amp i need something way less expensive than that, that rigs 750 bucks way too steep for me. got something thats like 400 bucks. also i like how your little dog vag video stint was the only video with likes or dislikes. i bet you scard some people for life. lol
@Fkepler2 I got my Hartke rig with the 4X10 cabinet and all for $300.00 Craig's List. People need that rent money bad at the beginning of the month. That's how you score those. Yeah, the holy rollers that are subscribed to my site flagged my dog video and it got removed. Can you believe that? People can't even handle just a little bit of humor. I wanted to let it fly, let the comments be posted with me controlling NOTHING with it, but....some folks can't stand to see me have fun. lol
that would b groovy right there. What amount or mg r urs? This 1 i have is 800 mg. Im getting more 2moro. Hey.... we could sell them & buy guitars with the money right? Thats funny though.
@jeraldsrestoration My pain pills are 500mg Lortabs and I take an average of 6-8 of them per day, everyday. Still it only takes a very slight edge off the pain.
Well Scott. Went 2 the Dr. & they did X-rays on my knees, blood work. Now i got 2 keep track on my blood pressure monitor it. I got 2 go pick up my prescriptions 2moro. Go back 2 the Dr. Monday. They're sending my film 2 a Radiologist 2 look @ so. Got pain pills as well 2 fill lol. Then, my eye doctor the following week Im loving it.
@MDK2323 Yes I have heard this. I was also told by Elixer just the opposite. So, it depends on who answers the phone over there that day. lol Be sure to check back in on this video next year and we'll talk about the great strings that USED TO BE.
yeah 4 sure. Hey! On that 1 CD i sent u. I did the song "Reno" on there. I love that song. Doug Supernaw. But yeah. Well. I do pray 4 u every night my friend. I believe strong on that. Ur my friend. Guitars & cool stuff right? Yep. Hey. True guitar players understand each other. I saw my old drummer the other day. The band we played n quit. Our guitar player cant play no more, he just lost it. He's N his 70s now. We sure went all over man. Well Scott. Talk 2 tomorrow. Eat & drink guitars lol
@jeraldsrestoration Yeah, I love that song too. SUPERB job on it by the way! Thanks so much my friend. And I know how it goes. I keep losing old band mates due to this or that or the ones that are still alive look just horrible. How did I stay so damned pretty and young looking? LOL. I know that they are finding me on here and saying "mercy, that Scott is still a good looking son of a bitch"! LMAO
well. I tell u something. When u first told me u had that stroke, i almost balled,& I no it was bad 4 u Scott. I dont no Y people have 2 suffer. Its a mystery. Nobody deserves 2 hurt or be sick all the time. There is no need n it. But I will say. Ur like me. U dont let nothing like that stop u from going on or slow u down. Cancer. I hate that word. I just want 2 kill it. Shoot it n heart. U hear more people with it now then ever u no. Its nasty. It's Guitarted
@jeraldsrestoration I hear you my friend. I haven't had 3 seconds in a row since then that my head hasn't hurt so bad that I just want to off myself. But, after so many years of it....it almost seems normal now. So, nothing else to do but accept it and keep on truckin'. That Cancer is an evil thing. It keeps robbing me of some of my best friends and family. I've got it good compared to what any of those folks have had to go through.
I found my video cable 4 Mr. Camera man so now. I can do the guitar right lol. Even though the end broke. I stuck it n and it sure enough worked so. Battery is charging so. The V will b displayed my friend. That's right.
WOW! I haven't talked 2 u n a hole year my friend lol. What im doing is. Overhauling my guitar playing. I got the big long lead guitar lesson of urs of course. Yep. Completely rebuilding it from bottom 2 top. Im gonna do the slide guitar, the rock lessons u name it. blues. So its a beautiful thing Thanks once again there good buddy. Oh before I forget. Welcome to 2012 lol. Yep..
@jeraldsrestoration You are a nut my friend! That's one of the many things that make you cool! Yeah, a whole damned year! Time sure does fly. I often have to go back and watch my own lessons to pick up some tips. I don't remember doing most of them. I had my stroke a little over 6 years ago and since then, I don't remember hardly anything. But, doing the lessons was a way of rehab for me, then people actually started buying them. lol Who knew I could make a living at it? lol
Hey Scott, I posted some covers of KiSS tunes on my channel. Check them out if you will, and by any chance did you receive the link of my performance awhile ago? Happy new years bro.
@stonedrocker666 Awesome, I'm going to go check them out. I haven't had time to roll over and check anything out at all with all my new gear coming in and getting all of my rack systems put together in time for the New Year's Eve gig. That gig went great and all the gear performed flawlessly. Great time! So, now I get to finally start reading some of my mail and getting that huge pile narrowed down a bit.
Here I is. The V did come n today lol. Its different then it looked on the picture. Tomorrow i will put up the video of it. It does have the locking nut with several wrenches & bolt on neck like a Fender. It's I think u will like it my man!
@jeraldsrestoration I hope it looks different than the picture in a good way. Sometimes you just never know, especially when people use stock photos instead of taking picures of the ACTUAL guitar you'll be getting, I can't wait to check it out!
every once in a while something good come,s along in your life and you always FEEL GOOD about it,this is the case for me when learning guitar at any of my level,s because of guy,s like this guy,, S Grove!!!
Guitaring can be a fun walk in the park with practice and the RIGHT guidance ,and this guy,s video,s are just that,i dont know the guy at all but because of his CD,s and his guidance along the way, each time i rehearse its like this teacher is in the same room,!!tks mate Sydney Down Under!!
@barnfres60 Thank you very much mate! I really appreciate that. I actually do about half of all of my video sales to the good folks in Australia. I'm very thankful for you all, but even better, I'm glad that you are able to get some good stuff from the video lessons and that they don't just sit in the pile of rubbish from the "REAL" videos out there. lol Many thanks to you again and Happy New Year!
@ROCKandROLLman1981 It's not that it's brass, it's that there are only 3 saddles. If you adjust the intonation on your saddle to make your High E string to be in tune, the B string rests on that same saddle and it will not be intonated, so....Your B string will play out of tune all the time. Same thing with the other pair of strings. So, you have to split the difference between the 2 and both strings on each saddle will have to be off equally. So, your whole guitar will ALWAYS be out of tune.
Morning Scott. The white flying V custom will b here today so. Hopefully when i get back it will b here. Have fun today and Happy New Year my friend. Right on. lol
@cutthecan LOL, much appreciated. I just got done blocking no less than 50 people in just the last half hour alone because of them being morons. I don't know why it's always the musicians that are the biggest pain in the ass folks to deal with. lol I guess that is also why I don't play in bands anymore. I don't have to put up with anybody else and they don't have to put up with me. I just go to the gig with my laptop, the tracks are there on time and I gig away and make 10X what I used to.
I am a new subscriber and in my opinion you are by far the best on youtube.I have already been a fan of the Polywebs and have bought them for any restring..I have been using lighter fluid to clean my rosewood fretboards for years with great results. What is your thought on using it?One more question for you since you were on the sustain subject for a minuite.Whats your thoughts on the tremelo blocks out there?Could you do a video on the best strats to buy and talkabout upgrades.I like 45 min vids
@runninonempiy Welcome aboard my friend! It's always great to have another Polyweb user gathering here by the fire. I thank you so much for your comments! I've never used the lighter fluid on the fretboards, but I'll give it a shot. I love to try new things. I'll be more than happy to talk about the trem blocks. They do have a very slight affect on tone and sustain. Not much, but enough where if you are like me and notice every little thing about your sound, they will make a difference.
@jackoswaldmusic Thank you so very much my friend! I just try to tell things like I see them. The graphite nuts have great and not so great traits. Same as everything I guess. They are a soft material, so they will actually wear out quicker than a plastic or bone nut, but they won't have the annoying hangups and binding that improperly cut nuts will always have. They do darken your overall tone and lessen your sustain a bit due to the softer properties of the nut. Good for TOO BRIGHT guitars.
@anonymous4014 After owning over 2,000 guitars, I still keep about 150 on hand at all times. It's about all I can fit into that particular room and the insurance company has a fit with me every time I buy a new one or sell one. They just can't keep up with all of the serial numbers and value changes etc. But, not my problem, that's what I pay them for right? LOL
hey scott how are ya, im having a dilemma. so i finally got to looking over my "new" guitar today and its not the best condition. specifically there are 2 dings on the side, there is a knick that goes through the paint on the front, clearcoat scratches everywhere, and finally the thing that really gets me is that the fretboard is cracking by the 4 fret. my dad will not allow me to take it back even though i put 200 dollars on it. can you help me out on how to convince him to take it back please.
@Fkepler2 I would've had it back in the car and shoved back down their throats in 30 minutes or less. lol Ask Dad if his car was wrecked, if he would just sit back and do nothing about it and just live with the damage? Tell him that you are in the same place and need to get things take care of instead of sitting back and taking it up the butt. lol That may motivate him a little when you tell him that you don't enjoy thins in your ass. lol
@groovydjs so i contacted the music store and they think i damaged it and will not refund me my money if it is received damaged which is the way i received it. so i have to pay to send it to them which i am and hope theyll give me a refund. they said they set it up and checked it for defects but i think created the defects on the guitar but i know i cant say that. again i need your help how do i explain it wasn't me!!! thanks man
@Fkepler2 I hate when that happens, and it happens with almost EVERY DEAL I MAKE. It never turns out well. Simply tell them that there was ZERO damage to the box that it came in and you are returning it RIGHT AWAY since a bruised and dinged guitar isn't what you ordered and that you haven't even played it. You are simply started the return process as soon as it came out of the box. So, the defects had to occur before it was packaged sinc the packaging was fine and dandy. So, their fault.
@TheMAJofficial I've had a couple of friends that have called them in the past couple of days and of course they say that they are not getting rid of them, but....they told me otherwise and they keep going away on their site and are down to only a couple of gauges for only a couple of instruments now. They used to have every gauge for every instrument. So, I'll go out on a limb and stick with.....yeah, they will be going away.
Don't know if I'll use Elixr on my electrics, but I'm gonna try them on the acoustic. I'm one of those players who changes strings very often. (At least once a week when I'm not gigging). I;ve been using Curt Mangen strings lately. Not a huge difference since I change them so often, but I like the fact that I can talk directly to Curt Mangen about his strings and he'll respond. Scott, you could probably talk to Curt about making strings to replace the elixr strings that are going away.
@WhiskeyRik At least with the Elixirs, you don't HAVE to change stings once a week. As I said, I changed them 6 times per night. I've never found a need to talk to the makers of my strings, as long as they last. It will be easy to find out if I want to try the Mangen strings. What is the coating process on them? On the string, over the string, applied before, during or after the strings are made? Thanks.
your a breath of fresh air Scott , It's great to hear the truth about stuff From a real Player , I've got to try those strings on my Acoustic , I'm about due for a set so I think I'll take your advice , Thank you , Your Da Man ... Finally ADVICE that don't Suck , LOL
@52TeleRick Rick my man. Many thanks buddy. I hope all is super Groovy on your end. I'm sitting here working on 5 different rack systems at once. If any of them fire up on the first go, I'll be really surprised. lol Hell, I can't go too wrong, just in>out>in>out....I can't screw this up too horribly bad. lol It's a ton of fun though. Finally getting some of my rigs the way I've been meaning to for years. So, what the hell, I figured I'd pull an all nighter and do them all. lol
PRS guitars are great. Unfortunately the toggle switch is in the way. And Dean Markley strings are the worst. Ernie Balls last for ever IMO - 30 years playing
@doable1 The toggle switch on which one of their tons of models is in the wrong place? No, Ernie Balls don't last forever. Your opinion would be wrong. 30 years of playing with dead strings it sounds like. If the toggle switch is in your way, then you need to change your playing style. I've never hit a toggle switch on ANY GUITAR on accident. So, travel back in time and learn to control that picking hand. I'm blocking you now so I don't have to babysit.
@TheMAJofficial I hear you. Easily one of the dumbest designs around. Yeah, those old Peavey bass bridges are massive and amazing! I love the one on my T-40. Now those puppies simply make all the sense in the world.
returned my nanowebs to guitar center today and got some polys gonna put em on soon im pretty excited to see how theyll last for me. when i went to return them they just let me keep the nanowebs for some reason so when i walked out the door i handed it to someone and said merry christmas. lol
StratCountry 1 day ago
@StratCountry I really prefer no finish at all on the back of my necks. You don't have anything to slow you down that way. So, if you're playing on an axe that you plan on KEEPING, the best thing to do is to simply sand off the finish from the back of the neck
groovydjs 17 hours ago
@groovydjs Appreciate it Scott. I never would have guessed that one, a person who has been in the music industry like you, would know these tricks of the trade.
I better keep the finish on, hopefully over time, it will wear down to slicker a feel.
StratCountry 17 hours ago
@StratCountry My pleasure. It will take a couple of decades unless you are playing 6 nights a week and 6 sets a night. That stuff is on there good. What you might do is just grab a Mexican neck off of Ebay for a hundred bucks, sand the hell out of it and if and when it's time to sell the Strat...the original neck will be in PERFECT condition when you bolt it back on there.
groovydjs 12 hours ago
I appreciate your quick response Scott, you are right about the Polywebs being the slickest strings out there, I noticed the difference right away. For some reason, when I get the slightest amount of moisture on my fingers & thumb, they really grab a-hold of the maple fret board & the backside of the neck, even lightly holding the neck. I'm finding it difficult playing some of Brent Mason's "old school" double-stop slides. I imagine being a green horn on electric guitar,.....
StratCountry 1 day ago
@StratCountry That's when the neck starts to feel good to, when that finish on the front of the maple fingerboard finally comes off. A few folks have gotten it right and have made the guitars with no finish anywhere on the neck or the fretboard. Not too many are bright enough to know to do it that way sadly enough.
groovydjs 17 hours ago
Hi Scott, just a quick question. Is there a way to make the Polywebs a bit slipperier without harming them. I really like the feel & performance of these new strings.
StratCountry 1 day ago
@StratCountry Hi my friend. These are about the slickest strings out there already. I've never though about it, but I am thinking about it right now, I know how the Polywebs are constructed and honestly, I would say that dipping each of your left hand fingertips in Vaseline, then play the guitar and let it do what it naturally does. Spread it out so thin and it should do wonders for what you are wanting from it. It will not break down the properties in the Polyweb coating either. Cheers.
groovydjs 1 day ago
Hey Scott can the saddles on a tune o matic tear off the coating on an Polyweb string
TheMAJofficial 4 days ago
@TheMAJofficial Yes, they can start the "fraying" process quite easily. The tune o matic is just such a HORRIBLE bridge for so many reasons. If you ever use a Bigsby trem with a tune o matic, forget it. You may as well be playing your stings with a butter knife. That combination will shred any Elixir string in seconds.
groovydjs 3 days ago
please make a video just to slam guitar center I'm so pissed off at those bastards
TheMAJofficial 6 days ago
@TheMAJofficial I actually fully intend to. I've got so much dirt on them via my own experience, but better yet, tons and tons of stories from others from all of the guitar forums and videos, lawsuits from them breaking people's instruments and getting away with not having to pay for it because of the money that they can throw at the lawyers and judges etc. They are some dirty ass folks. The majority of their gear they sell as NEW, returns from Musician's Friend. Not Cool.
groovydjs 6 days ago
That sounds amazing! I never knew that they could do that lol. I ordered my guitar on musicians friend today and I made sure that I had a set of polyweb's in that order lol. I freakin love those strings! The way that they feel on your fingers is great and I can play all the time now without my strings rusting like they used to cause like I said I live in Hawaii so the humidity kills the strings but these things are still holdin up. My friend just got a new Les Paul and I said "Make sure you pic
xxZMANXX44 1 week ago
@xxZMANXX44 Yeah, the Polywebs are truly amazing. I get to Hawaii quite a lot and know about that humidity for sure. I can say that I fully understand why the Ukulele, with it's nylon strings are so popular. You can't kill what is already dead sounding. Nothing to rust with them either. So, the Uke players have it made for sure. I would think that the Polyweb strings would be the #1 selling strings in the islands.
groovydjs 1 week ago
Sounds awesome! You will have to do a review on those when you try them out.
xxZMANXX44 1 week ago
@xxZMANXX44 100% for sure. I've VERY much looking forward to trying them out and putting them through the ringer. I will totally waste one set by putting them in salt water and then tossing them in the sun to dry, let them stay outside for a week, put them on an axe and see how they do. REGULAR strings will snap before you get them tuned to pitch after doing that. Polywebs sound like new and I can play on them for 5 years with no tone loss and no loss in their life. AMAZING stuff and true!
groovydjs 1 week ago
I checked down at the music center and they didn't have really any bass strings because they were sold out so I didn't get to see if they had those but I do know that if you are looking for the acoustic or electric polyweb's you can get them on musicians friend. They also have banjo polyweb's there to. 👍
xxZMANXX44 1 week ago
@xxZMANXX44 Super sweet! Plus Elixir have just released 2 new kinds of bass strings that will be available very soon that are "Supposedly" going to put the Polywebs to shame. I'll be trying them both for sure!
groovydjs 1 week ago
I ordered in some polywebs yesterday I can't wait till they get here
TheMAJofficial 2 weeks ago
@TheMAJofficial Very cool. I hope they do for you what they've done for me. No such thing as string changes anymore. lol I just love 'em.
groovydjs 2 weeks ago
@groovydjs and I've run out of all my ernie ball strings in about two weeks a month ago so I am in dire dire dire dire dire dire need of new strings
TheMAJofficial 2 weeks ago
@TheMAJofficial OUCH! Those things must feel like barbed wire by now.
groovydjs 2 weeks ago
I always thought that the bone nuts was a funky thing to have... I never really liked them at all
TheMAJofficial 2 weeks ago
@TheMAJofficial Yeah, the bone nuts are for the cork sniffers that think that they are the thing to have. They make no sense at all to me, but to each their own. That's why they make the roller nuts too, for folks like me who enjoy sustain, tone and being in tune. Little things like that are important to me. lol
groovydjs 2 weeks ago
I have a question about what you said about how nothing but the pick ups matter when the electric is plugged in. The question is "does that still apply to acoustic electric? Or does the wood still matter?"
xxZMANXX44 3 weeks ago
@xxZMANXX44 If you are using a Piezo pickups system that is used on 98% of guitars, then NO, the wood on the guitar doesn't matter when it's plugged in. In the case of some other kinds of preamps where you have the Piezo pickup under the bridge and a built in microphone also, then it starts to make a difference pretty big time, especially if you are using a lot of the mic signal over the pickup signal. But the majority of those mics will feedback in a HURRY in a live situation.
groovydjs 2 weeks ago
On a video on gibson's YouTube page the CEO talks about how pick ups work because they are magnets and that the string ringing changes the magnetic field and that's how your guitar gets it's sound. but then later in the video he talks about how the wood makes a huge effect on tone. All he ended up doing was contradicting himself
TheMAJofficial 3 weeks ago in playlist More videos from groovydjs
@TheMAJofficial So true, I know the guy you are talking about. He is a total moron and clearly only WORKS there, he doesn't know how a guitar WORKS. lol So typical of pretty much all guitar companies. They are COMPANIES, not guitar makers with any sense of...well, anything.
groovydjs 3 weeks ago
Yea they sell them for about $10. I was surprised when I saw all of them. I should have checked to see if they had the bass polywebs. I am going back on march 2nd so I will go check an see and I will get back to you on that.
xxZMANXX44 3 weeks ago
@xxZMANXX44 Yeah, let me know if they have any of the Bass Polywebs. They stopped making them a while back. It would be interesting to see if any are on the rack still.
groovydjs 3 weeks ago
I went down to the easy music center where I live to check if they still had the polywebs and I looked on the shelf and they had rows and rows and rows of them lol. I was like " o think god!" they had tons of the polywebs for the electric and tons of them for the acoustic so I think I will be good for a while lol.
xxZMANXX44 3 weeks ago
@xxZMANXX44 WOW, that is a first! Elixir usually won't put the Polywebs in stores. They must have custom ordered them. I'd hold on to those folks. I hope they are selling them at a good price to you.
groovydjs 3 weeks ago
SHIT= 33 (not counting bullshit)
FUCK= 12
A note on the discounted polyweb strings: Like you said no one who is an actual musician works in the high ranks of a music company. The objective of any business are profits. Elixer's CEO probably discontinued them cause they last so long and were cutting their revenue.
goredeathrot 3 weeks ago
@goredeathrot LMAO, that's great! You actually counted them. Thanks for the tally. I actually intended on doing that one day. lol You are probably right, nobody will buy another set if they won't wear out.
groovydjs 3 weeks ago
hey polyweb acoustics much better than electrics for me definitely hear a bigger difference over time than the electrics. plus they are the most comfortable strings ive played, big plus for me. i dont think my polyweb g,b,strings have rusted i just think theyve gotten dirty they still sound new. i dont know maybe im just thinking stupid shit as usual. lol
Fkepler2 4 weeks ago
@Fkepler2 Yeah, just give them a shot, like you have, see if they are for you at all. They are not for everybody. So, if they work for you on anything, you are one step ahead of the game.
groovydjs 4 weeks ago
I bought 2 sets of polywebs. One is lasting. The other, the coatings coming off, im not doin that rakey static thing, i just got them monday.
stonedrocker666 1 month ago
@stonedrocker666 Wow, you have to have treated them really badly for the coating to come off. After a few hundred sets, I've never had that happen and have never broken a single one of them. I wish I could be there to see it.
groovydjs 1 month ago
You're too funny! I mean that in a good way.
midwestfisherman 1 month ago
@midwestfisherman LOL, thanks much. Life's too short to take it too seriously.
groovydjs 1 month ago
Yea I would to but right now I'm not very sure. I will be going to the music store in about a month for a new guitar and I will definitely see if they still have them. I'm sure they do but I guess it is always better to be safe then sorry.
xxZMANXX44 1 month ago
@xxZMANXX44 True, you can rarely count on your music store to have what you need. Every time you need 4 of something, they will always have 3. Strange how that works. lol
groovydjs 1 month ago
Hi! There's a moment where you kinda contadict yourself. First you say Fender didn't got it right at the first time with the Broad/Telecaster, because of the wood that's been used (among other things). But then you say that once the guitar is plugged, woods doesn't matter. So what was wrong in using pine?
Anyway thanks for the video, very instructive!
(sorry if my english is bad)
remiremouk 1 month ago
@remiremouk Because pine dents easier than any other wood and there was no truss rod......so, that soft wood just bent over like a two dollar hooker when you strung it up. So, they had to go with different woods. So, that would be what I was talking about. Not the sound at all. Your English is better than most of the folks that live here. Come on over and let me pick some to go over there and take your place. lol
groovydjs 1 month ago
@groovydjs Ahah thanks. :D
Why is that?
remiremouk 1 month ago
@remiremouk Yeah, pretty much. The reason for the difference in sound would pretty much come down to the pickups. No 2 pickups are going to sound exactly alike. It could be do to a couple less windings on the pickup. A slightly different strength of the particular piece of magnet that was stuck under the pickup. All kinds of things like that will make for that subtle difference. You can play 20 guitars that are supposed to be IDENTICAL, and all of them will sound different. Nature of the beast.
groovydjs 1 month ago
it's actually common sense when you think about most of this
TheMAJofficial 1 month ago
@TheMAJofficial You would think so huh? lol There are hundreds and hundreds of comments that I won't publish because the MAJORITY of folks have way less than common sense when it comes to their responses. So, they just get blocked for the good of all and their comments erased before they are even posted. lol
groovydjs 1 month ago
Ok thank you. Another reason I use the Elixir is because I have lived in hawaii for 2 and a half years now and when I brought my electric guitar over here the strings rusted in 2 weeks because of the humidity so I went and got the polyweb's and they have lasted for about 3 months.
xxZMANXX44 1 month ago
@xxZMANXX44 Very good point! I get to the Islands a couple times per year and have noticed that all the strings on all the instruments (other than the ukes of course) are always fried or rusted out in all of the music stores. I would think that the shelves would be stocked heavily with the Elixirs.
groovydjs 1 month ago
I use the polyweb's for my electric guitar and they hold up great! I was wondering if you think for an intermediate guitar player like myself, can use other strings like Ernie Ball or something like that? I was wondering because if the store stops selling them where I live then I wouldn't really know what to get. I have a Yamaha apx500ll that has the standard strings and i haven't got to the store to get my polyweb's yet. So if they don't have them anymore I was wondering if I could use Ernie B
xxZMANXX44 1 month ago
@xxZMANXX44 Yes, you can use Ernie Ball strings. They will suck, rust, go dead and break, but you can use whatever you want. If your store doesn't carry Elixirs, order them online, they are cheaper that way anyway. That just means that your store sucks because they don't support their customers. Then, don't support them by giving them your money. You don't have to pay tax online either. You don't have to pay for gas online. Just wasting money when you leave the house for such things.
groovydjs 1 month ago
Kudos groovydjs! Another straightforward, highly informative video that rolls over all the funky string-/fretboard-caring-myths like an Abrams. Couldn't agree more about the Elixir Polyweb, of which I can luckily say that they are still available for the accoustics (even though here in Europe them bastids charge you some $20 per package). Only strings I have found to come close to the Polywebs is the Yamaha FS50BT. Not lasting as long as Elixirs but good sounding. All the best for 2012!
klcbsoft 1 month ago
@klcbsoft Happy new year my friend! Yeah, I have never understood why they don't offer the same products to everybody in the world for the same price if you are willing to pay the shipping. It simply doesn't make any sense to me. lol
groovydjs 1 month ago
Also good point on rosewood vs maple boards. Very true. Having worked with both types of timber myself (although not on guitars) rosewood has a more open grain to it, which would allow dirt and crap to get in, whereas maple has a very tight grain, much more resistant to contamination. Treated with a high quality finish, it's a good way to go. Also, Rustins Plastic Coating is a terrific coating to use. It's tricky to work with, but when cured, cut and polished, it's as shiny and hard as glass.
Fenner1976 1 month ago
@Fenner1976 Very good points. Thank you so very much for the post. It's rare that folks explain the correct reasons in an understandable way instead of just yelling garbage out. I really appreciate your contribution. Thank you!
groovydjs 1 month ago
@groovydjs forgive me if im wrong, but regarding the rosewood board, when you play properly, your strings dont actually touch the fret board. So how is your fret board getting the strings dirty?
Benderbot50 1 month ago
@Benderbot50 No, you are not wrong at all and I'll be more than happy to explain it to you. Your FINGERS touch your fretboard, your fingers pick up all of that grunge on the fretboard and shove the dirt that is on that fretboard into the windings of your strings. So, with each and every string bend you do, your fingers are indeed touching your fretboard and getting even dirtier.....so, you see where I'm going with this. But, it's a whole different ball game if you play fretless bass too.
groovydjs 1 month ago
@groovydjs No worries :) It's really refreshing to see someone who says what they really think, in a logical balanced way. Everything makes sense! I totally agree on the idea for a pine bodywood. Pine looks good as a bookcase, but not on a guitar body! Way too soft, too much natural resin in it and it dents way too easily. This is one of the best opinion videos out there...if not THE best. Over here, just about the easiest place for Elixir strings is Amazon, from what I've seen so far.
Fenner1976 1 month ago
@Fenner1976 Exactly, bookshelves is the way to go for a nice, easy way to use up some cheap pine. There's a reason they stopped making them from pine. Now that everybody wants an earlier and earlier knockoff of the vintage stuff, they have now gone back to the beginnings where the process failed and needed to be fixed. But all the kids want the earliest "reissue" they can find. It is somehow a status symbol for them. That's fine, except it will be unplayable and beat to hell in a month. lol
groovydjs 1 month ago

It's worth every cent.
groovydjs 3 weeks ago
@groovydjs Many thanks! No worries. What you're saying makes total sense to me. I can't afford to spend money on a soft guitar which probably isn't going to last anywhere near as long as a hardwood bodied instrument. Those spray-painted black strings are a laugh! People are being ripped off by things which look cool..but aren't! I'm going to try my best to get hold of some Polywebs for a new electric lefty (sometime soon hopefully). Serious thanks for this video...it's a massive help :)
Fenner1976 3 weeks ago
@Fenner1976 I'm so glad to have been some help to you. I don't want anybody to get ripped off. With the internet, we at least have a tiny bit of power to warn people of what is going on in the retail world (good or bad) and let them decide for themselves. You have a good head on your shoulders and realize the difference between nice and nasty. lol. Let me know what you end up with! Cheers.
groovydjs 3 weeks ago
@groovydjs Many thanks my friend :) For me, it's very refreshing to see a totally unbiased & honest review of things which work...and things which don't! It's sad to see that Elixir are phasing-out their Polywebs. They will end up shooting themselves in the foot I think. With my situation, over here in the UK, options are pretty limited for left handers, as stores don't stock many lefties. although I've narrowed it down to either an Ibanez SA series...or a Pacifica. Thanks again :)
Fenner1976 3 weeks ago
@Fenner1976 Thank you very much! Yeah, a big shot in the foot for sure!. Which Pacifica are you looking at? They've made some really great ones. It doesn't really matter with Yamaha if they are the Japanese ones or the models from Taiwan, both factories produce some real great guitars.
groovydjs 3 weeks ago
@groovydjs No worries :) I'm ashamed to admit that it's been about 20 years since I last played, & it's time I got back into it again after a (very) long break! I've been carefully reading-up on reviews for guitars in my price range before I buy anything & the Pacifica 112 always scores high results. I'm a bit of a traditionalist & prefer natural & burst finishes. I've owned Yamaha instruments before, & they've all been excellent.
Fenner1976 3 weeks ago
@Fenner1976 Yeah, they have always been amazing instruments that have been overlooked over and over again for the "Flavor of the month" guitars that come and go. Yamaha is always a safe bet for sure.

jeraldsrestoration 1 month ago
Scott my man!. Im getting ready to post a video up about the Nanoweb strings. This is week 3 & they r still holding up quite well & so. I wanted 2 update these strings & compare the 2 kinds u no the Polywebs VS Nanowebs so. Like I said We'll C how long they last. I even put some fun stuff n it, picken on u about u having all ur elixir strings & wont share lol. Let me no what u think of this video alright? Its kind a funny tho
jeraldsrestoration 1 month ago
@jeraldsrestoration Awesome my man. Let me know when it's up. I can't wait to see it. I went to Elixir's You Tube page today and noticed that a few of my friends were asking them about discontinuing the Polywebs, they are still denying it of course. Told them that they had some exciting, new things on the horizon that they couldn't mention. Also told them that they 100% would not be bring back the Polyweb bass strings no matter what. So, that's a dead issue for sure. US "We want them" Them "NO"!
groovydjs 1 month ago
Hey groovydjs thanks for the video, it was very informative and learned a lot from it. I just bought about 10 sets of elixir polyweb strings. Ofcourse before I watched this video I had just bought some nanoweb medium gauge for acoustic. Hopefully they will be okay, but if not will stick with the polywebs.I don't tend to sweat as much as you or some other players though ( lucky me lol can't believe you had to change your strings so often ) thanks again for the video man.
AmericanWitchDoctor 1 month ago
@AmericanWitchDoctor Awesome my friend. Thank you so much for watching! I really hope you enjoy the Elixirs. Without the deamon sweat, you should be fine and dandy with either type then. They both prevent everyday gunk from settling between the windings of your strings and prevent the rusting too. So, I'm sure you'll like them. Please report back in with your personal findings on them for the rest of the folks that stumble across this thread if you would.
Thanks,
Scott

@groovydjs sweet...i always keep my pickups down within the pickaud, body or mounting ring
stonedrocker666 1 month ago
@stonedrocker666 Cool, you are on the right track. You can always raise them to your tonal taste, but more than 1/3 the way between your pickguard or mounting rings, then they will start having bad things to do with your tone, sustain etc. If you use pickups such as Lace Sensors or EMG's, then you don't have to worry about such things, you can put them anywhere you want.
groovydjs 1 month ago
How much sustain would i get out of a tune o matic ROLLLER bridge?
stonedrocker666 1 month ago
@stonedrocker666 You would get a little more since the strings would be in contact with more actual mass with the rollers than they are with the little, knife edge saddles on the tune-o-matic. You'll get 10X more sustain by simply lowering your pickups a little bit. More than any other single thing you could possibly do.

Hey there, I own 2 Samick guitars, a copy of the Gibson ES-335 (from the 90s I guess) and a brand new LN10 "Linda". Both are GREAT guitars, very well built and with good pickups IMHO. I own japanese vintage stuff from late 70s early 80s (Aria Pro II, Westone Concord I, Greco Strat), that are impressive and really enjoyable, but my Samicks also are on top of my tiny collection.
raphory 1 month ago

Where can I find the normal webs not the nanowebs. my stores only carry the nanowebs
wessel7076 1 month ago
@wessel7076 Yeah, music stores suck. You can get them on Musician's Friend online or on Ebay. They are called Polywebs. Elixir are trying to hide the Polywebs from everybody and the music store owners are probably not bright enough to know that the original Polywebs even exist since Elixir isn't telling them about them. Pretty sad huh? lol

groovydjs 1 month ago
hey scott my polywebs have already rusted and went dull on the unwound strings meaning the g,b and e strings. are they not coated? doesnt seem worth it if it only lasts on the wound strings. :\
Fkepler2 1 month ago
@Fkepler2 Hi my friend. The plain strings are 100% coated. I've never once (with any brand of string or the age of the string) had a dead or dull plain string. That's a brand spanking new claim there my friend. Rust on some string? Sure, I've never had one even slightly tarnish on any Elixir set before. Not even the ones that are years and years old and have never once been wiped. I would honestly say that I would have to see that to even start to believe it.
groovydjs 1 month ago
Someone asked me to try WD-40 on some regular strings to bring them back to life. I gave the Tele with the dead strings and the Gibson Grabber bass with the dead strings from this video a good wipe down on all strings with a butt load of WD-40. They were nice and greasy afterwards. No extra life was noticed at first. I wiped them down after about 5 minutes with a dry cheese cloth and still nothing. I let them sit for another 3 days now. Still dead as can be. So, WD-40 just makes them slick.
groovydjs 1 month ago
@groovydjs The video was actually very informative, i stayed tuned for the whole 48 min. But I was curious about something though, I saw in a store the other day Titanium coated strings. I know that the Elixirs are good, But I was wondering what, if anything, titanium coating does for strings. & Thank you for sharing both your knowlage and your collection with us. :)
MrBac755 1 month ago
@MrBac755 The titanium is from the regular Ernie Ball Coated strings. They put what they call a titanium drip (smaller than a 1/4 drop of water on the wrapping around the ball end of the strings to try to keep your balls from falling off. lol Sad, but true. I can't remember one single time that I've ever had the ball end fall off of a string, but that is all that whole marketing mess is about. Nothing more.
groovydjs 1 month ago
@groovydjs Sorry i've taken so long to get back, and wow, is that really it? I've had strings break on me in 50 ways and never has the ball broken on me. & i used to use normal non titanium ernie balls. lol. Thank you for telling me, i was jw because i thought maybe there may have been a sound diffrence or something. But thank you again. :)

@MrBac755 My total pleasure my friend. Since I got me a superb magnifying glass and am now able to see and cure any burrs on the bridge saddles....no more string breaking. It's a beautiful thing.

heh heh heh got my money back. yes. thanks for the help. recommendations on a bass amp?
Fkepler2 1 month ago
@Fkepler2 I have all kinds of recommendations on bass amps. Let me know what kind of tone you're looking for, price range (not that it really matters...but I can better get you into the seat of something more comfortable that way). The thing is that a single 10" speaker in the correctly designed cabinet will out perform a wall of anything else and by using only 1/10 the wattage. So, how loud does it really have to be since it's going to be pumped through the PA anyway etc.
groovydjs 1 month ago
@groovydjs price between 200-500 dollars. tone like jpj geddy lee you know good all around cleans and a nice od, a good punchy tone, good for slap, just an all around amp. i have a jazz bass type bass.
Fkepler2 1 month ago
@Fkepler2 Cool, easy enough. Grab you a used Hartke setup. Get the 3500 head and a 4X10 Hartke cabinet and you are golden. The tightest bass sound around. Punchy as all hell, great definition and no mud bass at all. The bigger the actual speaker cone, the slower the cone moves and the floppier your sound gets. So, 15" and 18" speakers just suck balls for a great bass tone. That's why the Ampeg SVT rig has been legendary for so long. Those 8X10" speakers are just so very tight sounding.
groovydjs 1 month ago
@groovydjs hey scott ill send you a pic of my strings tomorrow so that you can see for yourself. for the bass amp i need something way less expensive than that, that rigs 750 bucks way too steep for me. got something thats like 400 bucks. also i like how your little dog vag video stint was the only video with likes or dislikes. i bet you scard some people for life. lol

@Fkepler2 I got my Hartke rig with the 4X10 cabinet and all for $300.00 Craig's List. People need that rent money bad at the beginning of the month. That's how you score those. Doesn't ASAT mean a strat and tele, that what i always thought, since that's basically what it is.
mattallica464 1 month ago
@mattallica464 Actually it doesn't. If you look...99% of ASAT guitars only have the 2 pickups. The ASAT III's were a very limited run.
groovydjs 1 month ago
Can you explain how the brass saddles on a Tele won't stay in tune?
ROCKandROLLman1981 1 month ago
@ROCKandROLLman1981 It's not that it's brass, it's that there are only 3 saddles. If you adjust the intonation on your saddle to make your High E string to be in tune, the B string rests on that same saddle and it will not be intonated, so....Your B string will play out of tune all the time. Same thing with the other pair of strings. So, you have to split the difference between the 2 and both strings on each saddle will have to be off equally. So, your whole guitar will ALWAYS be out of tune.

I absolutely love how real you are, man. What's your opinion on graphite nuts?
jackoswaldmusic 2 months ago
@jackoswaldmusic Thank you so very much my friend! I just try to tell things like I see them. The graphite nuts have great and not so great traits. Same as everything I guess. They are a soft material, so they will actually wear out quicker than a plastic or bone nut, but they won't have the annoying hangups and binding that improperly cut nuts will always have. They do darken your overall tone and lessen your sustain a bit due to the softer properties of the nut. Good for TOO BRIGHT guitars.

holy shit how many guitars do u have!?!?!?!?!?!?i cant afford 2

@anonymous4014 After owning over 2,000 guitars, I still keep about 150 on hand at all times.

Fkepler2 2 months ago
@Fkepler2 I would've had it back in the car and shoved back down their throats in 30 minutes or less. lol Ask Dad if his car was wrecked, if he would just sit back and do nothing about it and just live with the damage? Tell him that you are in the same place and need to get things take care of instead of sitting back and taking it up the butt. lol That may motivate him a little when you tell him that you don't enjoy thins in your ass. lol
groovydjs 1 month ago
@groovydjs so i contacted the music store and they think i damaged it and will not refund me my money if it is received damaged which is the way i received it. so i have to pay to send it to them which i am and hope theyll give me a refund. they said they set it up and checked it for defects but i think created the defects on the guitar but i know i cant say that. again i need your help how do i explain it wasn't me!!! thanks man
Fkepler2 1 month ago
@Fkepler2 I hate when that happens, and it happens with almost EVERY DEAL I MAKE. It never turns out well. Simply tell them that there was ZERO damage to the box that it came in and you are returning it RIGHT AWAY since a bruised and dinged guitar isn't what you ordered and that you haven't even played it. You are simply started the return process as soon as it came out of the box. So, the defects had to occur before it was packaged sinc the packaging was fine and dandy. So, their fault.

They used to have every gauge for every instrument. So, I'll go out on a limb and stick with.....yeah, they will be going away.
groovydjs 2 months ago
Don't know if I'll use Elixr on my electrics, but I'm gonna try them on the acoustic. I'm one of those players who changes strings very often. (At least once a week when I'm not gigging). I;ve been using Curt Mangen strings lately. Not a huge difference since I change them so often, but I like the fact that I can talk directly to Curt Mangen about his strings and he'll respond. Scott, you could probably talk to Curt about making strings to replace the elixr strings that are going away.
WhiskeyRik 2 months ago
@WhiskeyRik At least with the Elixirs, you don't HAVE to change stings once a week. As I said, I changed them 6 times per night. I've never found a need to talk to the makers of my strings, as long as they last. It will be easy to find out if I want to try the Mangen strings. What is the coating process on them? On the string, over the string, applied before, during or after the strings are made? Thanks.

I hate how every other chanel or guitar player praises the tune-o-matic i like the bridge on my bass player's peavey

@TheMAJofficial I hear you. Easily one of the dumbest designs around. Yeah, those old Peavey bass bridges are massive and amazing! I love the one on my T-40. Now those puppies simply make all the sense in the world.

I can't believe my best friend had the nerve to say elixirs are toneless and lifeless.

@stonedrocker666 Goes to show you that he's never tried them. He's only read what D'Addario users have had to say in a magazine. lol
