Good video, I was taught to hold the charcloth against the underside of the stone and strike the back of the knife against the stone passing it against the cloth on the end of the stroke, this will cause the sparks to naturally fall right into the cloth, and if you keep your spacing right you should keep the charcloth from tearing.
Hey, at least he's honest here. He could have edited this to make it look like he got it going on the first or second try. I saw a vid a couple of days ago--5 second hand drill fire or something like that--which conveniently doesn't show what may have gone on before the 5 seconds that it supposedly took to start the fire.
@ROBwithaB I was goin to say the same thing would of been real easy that way and love ur vids:) it not my area of expertise (a Flint and knife) I use magnifier glass.
Hold the char cloth BENEATH the rock. If you look carefully, you'll notice that most of the sparks are leaving the knife in a downward direction. If you place your tinder in the path of the oncoming sparks, it is much more likely to catch them. I can usually do this in 2 or 3 strikes.
I really do admire your patience and persistence here, though...
I made a video recently showing some of the techniques involved. (And also a simpler way to get your tinder bundle to ignite.)
ok so (lip smack) you imagin (lip smack) you magicaly (lip smack) use your jerk off muscle and (lip smack) o wait or try this i was wrong...(lip smack) o wait i'm still wrong(lip smack) or maybe its ust my rock (lip smack) and then cut your finger...
Great job! I'm just curious why you didn't do it with the knife in the closed and locked position. It's allot safer. I know that you can strike a fire steel rod with the Opinel in the closed and locked position so this shouldn't be any different.
Great job! It's really hard to make fire that way, but you showed everyone that it is possible, Btw, I like all your's videos, but this one is the most inspiring.

@sinkingrob11 Listen kid I watch a few of your videos and after reading your comment all I can do is laugh and thank you for taking the time out of your busy day of sitting in your room playing with toy guns and playing Runescape to comment on my video, thank you!
watch?v=u1WNucor_ng <-----this shows the hypocrisy or your comment.
@UnlimitedBushcraft Hahahaha, Actualy I was joking to see your funny ass reaction wich I did! Plus I dont play runescape I was picking on runescape "montages". And what is this listen kid your like 10. And I dont spend the day in my room that terroists video was like 4 years ago that I uploaded last year that I found on my camera. Acuatly im pretty acomplished with my life so far, im working to get my pilots licence I have been taking Mixed martial arts. So dont judge me. Thanks by (=
@sinkingrob11 So you're saying that you wrote that comment to see how my reaction would be and you are older than 11? Listen if you have some sort of mental troubles I'm sorry if I am offending you but who are you trying to impress? I doubt that your video was from 4 years ago, It's kind of sad that you would tell me to die just to see my reaction....maybe you should grow up a bit and also I'm 15 not 10.
@UnlimitedBushcraft Hahahhaha, Your 15 and havent gone through puberty and you seem very immature. Anyway im done talking with you I dont enjoy talking with un inteligent people.
@sinkingrob11 Yes from all of the recent comments that you have made I seem immature and unintelligent, I'm not going to argue with an 11 year old trying to insult me from behind the safety of his computer screen.
Or you could just whack it with a hammer stone to get a good edge.
Carry a two inch piece of hacksaw in your wallet along with a small packet of charcloth. All you have to do is find a rock that breaks with a conchoidal fracture and you're in business.
You won't easily find amadou or charred fiber in the bush. You might get lucky and find an old campfire and thusly have access to charcoal.
nice work! I noticed that most of the sparks were appearing under the char cloth. Perhaps, wrap the cloth around the stone so it catches sparks from top and bottom.
I have this same knife and use this same techniche. (If thats how you spell it.) My opinel is around tje same size and is getting surface rust on it, do you get that on your knife?Just wondering if i got a cheap copy of an opinel. Nice vid, i'll send you a frend request afterwards.
This is for a survival situation, there are no stores around to buy matches from in the wilderness, YOU IDIOT. The sparks are actually instantaneous, but it might be smarter to lay the charcloth under the stone so the sparks land on it.
@baldycoup if you were out in the back of nowhere and no matches and you needed fire you will be glad you watched this video this kid would survive in the wild when you are long dead from hunger and cold,so make sure you always carry a box of matches you might need them sometime
Good job. I started a fire this way last night. I used the smooth edge of a file, a piece of flint, and denim char cloth. I have used quartz too, and IMO there is not much difference between the two. I will say though that I don't care for denim char cloth. It does not seem to take a spark a well as thinner fabric that I have made it from in the past. To get it to work, have to lay it on the ground at the base of my file, then I strike the flint across the file showering sparks downward.
Well done! I have also used thinner char cloth in the past but I find that the fluffiest cotton works best like fluffy towels as it gives you more places for your sparks to catch!
Thanks and it's a beech handle but I have had to sand off all the oil and re-oil it twice because I've had it for a few years and it has seen a lot of use!
hey you are gonna stick your knife in your face

Yeah Opinels are made out of carbon steel which will rust so to clean it up just use a bit of steel wool or wet/dry sandpaper!
