I like the way you have put all the plants in the backside n put all small fishes....I'd like to make one like that but my school of silver dollar fishes have grown big :p
and they dont allow me to keep any real plant in :/
but really it isnt hard to keep plants a live in your tank. Especially the hardy ones. My fluorescent light broke for my 55g and i been using a lamp as the light source for my tank ever since. It just keeps them a live, but they grow very slowly
jungle vals from petsmart. I bought one set to test my kitty liter substrate and it works very well for this plant. I do believe though, that if i want more plants or harder plants, that i would need appropriate substrate.
Honestly, as long as your fish arent at the surface gasping for O2, you should be fine. If you have a filter, its water agitation will be more than enough o2 for your fish, assuming you dont overcrowd or have massive amounts of co2 injected. Start with a few tester goldfish first for 5cents.
Also, this video of my tank has no co2 injection. This plant is just one of those "easy" types. Just plant, fertilize once every 4 months, feed the fish and youre done.
I just have a couple more questions, then I'll leave you alone. Like I said earlier, I just started a 30 gallon tank. All I have are very little gravel, filter , and heater, NO HOOD/LIGHTS!!! What would you recommend for a new hood and lights? And when you say fertilizers, is that natural fertilizers that are in the tank, or is that something you have to buy also?
Fertilizer - OSH has "Jobes Plant Food Spikes for Lush Ferns and Palms" $1.99 for 30 spikes. The NPK rating is 16-2-6. My tank in this video only uses those fertilizer spikes. I still use the same pack and will last me about 2-3 years.
Lights - You'll want 4wpg to get enough light for any type of plant you want. You also want 6500k bulb color temperature to mimic the sun's rays. I'd suggest measuring the length of your 30g and search for a match on ebay. Mine is from ebay, the Odyssea one.
its because i was on a really tight budget when designing my tank setup. The lights already cost me about $160 and the 60g tank was already 40 dollars too. I didnt want to spend 50+ on substrate, so i chose kitty liter. In a substrate, you'll want it to have a high CEC content, which stands for cation exchange ...something, i forgot. But what this does is allows the fertilizers in the water to be absorbed by the substrate to then be later released to the plant.
I just my first 30 gallon and would like to learn a little bit more about aquascaping (google didnt really answer some of my questions :|)and thought it would be better to ask a expert himself. So here are my two basic questions, if you don't mind. What are the benefits of c02 reactors and how do they work? And are bubblers bad for plated tanks?
From what i know, the benefits of a co2 REACTOR would allow more of the co2 bubble to dissolve into the water. If you had no reactor, the bubble would just float to the top of the tank as 1 big bubble and escape. The reactor would push the bubble back down over and over, scattering and breaking up the bubble so all of its co2 contents will be released into the water until it pretty much vanishes.
As for bubblers that introduce air from the room into the aquarium system, I would not recommend it if you are injecting co2. When you have a reactor that is helping dissolve the co2 into your water, you will want the least amount of water agitation possible so that the co2 can flow from the reactor side all the way to the other end. The bubblers would agitate the water too much and allow the co2 to escape the tank invisibly prior to being used by the plant.
hi there . i have a tank just set up. i love your tank. please give me some advide how to maintain the the plant alive. my tank start grow alge .very nasty
for starters on a tight budget like me, you should get the walmart kitty liter as substrate for $2. You should then buy lighting that rates at about 6500K color temperature because this emulates the sun's rays the best.
Using that color of light, you should choose about 3-4 watts per gallon in your tank. Grab a decent filter and buy a test plant. Vals like mine can be bought at Petsmart for like 5 dollars. I also fertilize my tank about once every 4 months. At OSH, buy Jobe's Plant Food Spikes for like $2 and stick a few into the kitty liter substrate. Get some easy fish to go with your easy plant and you'll have a nice starter planted tank.
not long at all. I purchased them at about 1 foot long, which is what they sell at PetCo and Petsmart etc. It took only about 3 weeks to get that long. The combination of lights/substrate and soem ferts on the side has helped a ton. As of today though, i dont fertilize anymore because they are getting out of hand. They're just maintaining their look now and not over-growing.
my substrate is walmart kitty litter. i use Jobe's plant food spikes (fertilizer) sells for about 99 cents at OSH. I stick the ferts in about once every 4-5 months. you could use some PMDD too every now and then, which is just extra liquid fertilizer you can get at a fish store. And you need some lighting, 6500k or 'daytime' compact fluorescent lighting. You'll need at least 3 watts per gallon. My tank has 260watts.
Very very nice tank, I am interested in planting my aquarium, but I know nothing about it, what do you need to make plants happen and grow? (Gravel wise) and (Chemical wise), thx
Nice! I really want a nice planted tank, problem is- my fish have turned into total omnivores- the little beasts. I do'nt have a single cichlid either. They even like to nibble the Anubias I put in there (I think that's by bad bad clown loaches. If you wanna check out my tank, I just put it up under- My crew/ My Fish. Thanks for responding!
I'm using the 260watt odyssea light fixture from ebay for $140 total. The bulbs are 2x65w 6500k and 2x65w 1200k. These give my tank about 4.33 watts per gallon which is 'high' lighting :)

Hey Drux, should I layer anything on top of the KL substrate? Or is there a recommended top layer substrate? Thanks

@HermannTheGreat The whole substrate is KL only. This one has 1 layer if that's what you're asking.

Looks so natural, especially when you zoom in so that the tank isn't visible, just the inhabitants.

yea, walmart sells cheap compact fluorescents. you need the DAYLIGHT one, which is 6500k light temperature.

Hood - I dont use a hood though the tank would stand out better with one. I dont have time to make one yet :(
Gravel - I would swap out your gravel as the first step. Gravel has no CEC ability and would do the roots of plants no good.

Something like that. Kitty liter does just that and works great. It has also been recommended by other plant enthusiasts if you go the budget route.
