i think the whole reason why he 'forgave' her is because he saw how anna and larry somehow forgave eachother. i think this scene shows how he thought being like them would save him. u also can tell he doesn't rly love her and that hes lying to himself
I feel sorry for her everytime I see the movie, she was needy for love and felt for the first man that "rescue"(beacuse she always get hit by the feeling of love) and the same time she is afraid of being unloved, that why she not tell him her name, she want to be all he want and the same time, she is the only truly character who is pursuing love as a reason to live...
...does everyone understand that he doesn't actually slap her? He just brushes her hair as his hand goes past. I'm reading all these comments about how epic the slap is and he doesn't slap her. At all.
Fantastic scene, and I think the non-slap is clearly shown to be so because Jude's character can't bring himself to make contact.
@jeumort I'm not sure if there's sufficient proof either way. I think that he did slap her (ergo the reaction on her face. She doesn't actually believe he could bring himself to slap her) and that this scene draws the final knot in the four-way relationship.
"Where? Show me, where is this love? I can see it, I can touch it, I can feel it, I can hear it, I can hear some words, but I can't do anything with your easy words"
I think everyone can relate to that line at some point of their lives..
@agustinasara she says 'I CAN'T see it, I CAN'T touch it. I CAN'T feel it. I CAN hear it. I can hear some words, but I can't do anything with your easy words.'
i love this scene...it show how easy it is to fall in and out of love with a person and how easy it is to convince yourself that you do love a person...love it.
wait...i saw this movie, but several years ago, so someone please explain to me how natalie ends up being the angry one ending things when she just revealed that she cheated on him? is it because he let her confess to her crime when he already knew about it? how is that worse?!
@peanutmmss Technically, she didn't cheat. He had broken up with her and she started stripping again. Larry met her in the club again, and they had sex. She didn't cheat.
And also: I see a lot of people saying he didn't trust her. Well, she obviously didn't trust him either, 'cause she wouldn't say the truth. It must have been hard to tell him about Larry, but Dan at some point did tell Alice about Anna: he was honest, and that's all he wanted from her. I think her not being able to tell the truth is worst that him wanting to know.
I hate how dismissive he is with Alice's answers to his questionare and the movie implies that Anna's respones are of more conscern to the men as if Alice's don't count. You can read it on Alice's face when he reacts to her admittance.
@besjond i don't think so , she's as shameless as he was, she hurt him as he did hurt her before..at first he saw her as weak, naive, and needy and in the end he got mad at her just because he found out that she was a mysterious person who knew everything but pretended she did not know, he thought he knew everything about her but he didn't even get her name and she was even stronger than him, she did not need him, never did...she's the most enigmatic character in this movie to me
@GiovanniCorella20 - Totally agree. Her character is a mystery from beginning throughout and till the end. I still don't know what her purpose is. I mean, she lives with Dan for a couple years under a false name. She hides her passport from him. Yet it is so easy for her to be "honest" to Larry at the strip club when she tells him she's "plain Jane." None of the viewers know what she is thinking or feeling. I feel like she is a big hoax, but the movie makes me want to believe she does feel.
I'd seen this movie 2 yrs ago and I'm watching it all over again..I just like to 'coz I l Heart Jude Law and Natalie Portman...wish to see them both, do another movie like this...:))
Lucas had Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson, and Samuel L. Jackson, and their collective 'forces' still couldn't make that piece of shit script work for love nor money. So maybe - just maybe - the problem isn't her.
FFS, Moses, Muhammed and Christ gangbanging their cum out onto the page, in an attempt to melt the words down into something remotely tolerable, still couldn't draw any dramatic integrity from that aborted foetus of a trilogy.
I forgot to add that this, however, is a good script from a proper writer called Patrick Marber, and directed by a proper filmmaker called Mike Nichols. And thusly Ms. Portman's performance in it, is probably the best of her career, as is also the case for the three other actors.
To anyone else who loved Closer as much as I did, I thoroughly recommend Marber's other film, 'Notes on a Scandal'.
essa cena tbm é muito pesada...hard, punk, densa...enfim, uma cena difícil de fazer e q exige muitos sentimentos aflorados...tanto pra qm atua quanto pra quem assiste.
"where's this love? i can't see it i can't touch it i can't feel it... i can hear..i can hear some words.. but i can't do anything with your easy word"...
IN THIS MOMENT IS WHEN I CRY.... A L W A Y S :( :( i love THIS MOVIIEE (:
I've never been a huge fan of Jude Law... but Natalie is nothing short of phenomenal in this scene. She is definitely a better actress than what Star Wars gives her credit for.
After that, the movie finishes. Hehe, really. We see Anna and Larry in bed, he's sleeping but by the look in Anna's eyes, she doesn't seem happy. Then,. we see Alice coming back to The States, then we see Dan walking around the park he went with Alice the day they met and he sees this sort of tomb stone with the name "Alice Ayres" so he realizes she never told him her real name (Jane Jones, which we see in her passport). Then we see Alice walking down New York. And it's over.
She leaves him and returns to America. You find out form her passport that her name is really Jane Jones (just like she told Larry in the strip club). Anna and Larry are in bed, but Anna may be unhappy. Dan returns to the park where his father used to take him all the time and discovers the name "Alice Ayers" on a tombstone. Since that was the name "Alice" had given him, he had taken her to this park, and the tombstone said she died a long time ago, he realized that he never knew her real name.
Where is this love? I... I can't see it, I can't touch it. I can't feel it. I can hear it. I can hear some words, but I can't do anything with your easy words.
personally, I think Anna was hit before by her ex husband, the british one. I don't think she'd be dumping larry for a guy who beats her up. It's just an opinion.
can someone explain to me why she decides she doesn't love him anymore? is it just because she know's he'll never truly forgive her for sleeping with Larry or because she told Larry her real name or what? I was a little confused.
@grnemrldeyes: No. He isn't fucked up. Your ignorance speaks volumes of what you haven't understood about this particular message from the movie and my irrationally harsh response confirms it (sorry). The scene has a lot to say about the human condition and what we're willing to go through in order to find and keep love. In this scene Dan demonstrates his emotionally quicksilver state and Alice's struggle to be open and truthful about love (which inevitably caused her to no longer love him).
@SJMJ91 of course not. i didn't mean it like that. but women & men think differently. we have completely different brains. that comment, although truthful & not something most people would admit, was the rationale of infidelity from & of a man.
@thegabster32 no we don't, we're actually very similar to the core. Guys are softies although they act more macho, but they are capable of the same feelings women are supposed to have naturally.
@narutoyondaime14 while i agree that MOST guys are softies & that they're capable of the same feelings as women, i'd still argue that our brains are different. in the sense of cheating, MOST women don't cheat when they have something good. lots of guys do though & are able to go on about their lives as if it never happened, keeping that same feeling towards their significant others. most women can only be completely devoted to one person at a time.
@thegabster32 I understand what you mean. Actually you're right in your argument that our brains are wired differently.... interesting fact: in a study done recording activity in the brain of a man and woman, when thinking about nothing in particular, the man barely had any activity in the brain, while the woman had sooo much. So when women ask the man "what are you thinking?" when they say "nothing" they mean it, lol. But I have met many men that are very much softies and can overthink like us.
@narutoyondaime14 basically what i'm saying is that there's (typically) an emotional reasoning behind why women cheat & a physical reasoning behind why men cheat.
Every time I see this movie I remember my failure as a couple ... is something you must see before you get married or similar ...

@jeumort Larry should slap Anna when she admits she's been seeing Dan during their marriage but has no desire to do so.
Dan slaps Jane for gaining her emotional freedom and breaking away.
Jane is only "completely" honest with Larry, who she tells her real name.
Anna is only truly happy with Dan but leaves him out of guilt.

Truth and Forgiveness:
the most difficult things ever.
I love the theatrical and essential scenography of this movie.
velozza 2 years ago 6
I think it is the first one.
The central point is the truth.
She thinks it is not necessary to tell everything, expecially something she understands he will never truly forgive her.
The truth, knowing everything about each other (even the real personality), is not fundamental, because only Love and real feelings count.
