I love this movie and this was defined the best scene, Raph and Leo both are amazing characters, who is the stronger I really don't care both have their strength points and flaws. Leo can be calm and wise, but he's annoyingly smart-ass. That's why he's my least favourite in the team. He's melancholic all the time. He acts like he wants to run away and never look back.
The sais broke leo´s sword, because of fisics, not strength.

ok, im sick of hearing this leo didnt fight with full strenght bullshiiit,so we all know that leo always listens to m.splinter and splinter never allows them to fight (exept trainig) .. so he fights to proof that he deserves to be the leader.. so my take is that leo is the better marshall artist but raph is the better warrior ,, if it comes down to it ,the passion and will of raph make him strong enough to kick leos ass ,,, raph is the real deal ,,, one bad ass motherfuckeeer.....
also,at the end of the fight you can tell leo had that" i told you so" look on his face. raph knew that he just proved leo right...again. which of course makes him look even more foolish. knowing that he messed up leo's swords and nearly killed his own brother because of his temperament raph runs away in shame to reflect on what happened.
the way leo moves offensively and defensively throughout the fight shows that he is in control. at 3:34 right after leo kicks raph you can cleearly see that he drives that point home by intentionally missing. (you can tell by his surprised expression that he expected leo to not miss). raph knew that leo got the better of him in that exchange. when they locked weapons raph wanted vindication for leo's smug attitude, so he broke his swords.
The whole point of this scene is to show us that Raph and Leo are both strong but flawed characters.
Leo is more level-headed and rational, Raph is more passionate and determined. Leo fails to look at the bigger picture and Raph fails to control his anger.
Raph is the better fighter but Leo's the better leader.
Leo focused on training alone with self-reflection, Raph focused on going out and fighting crime.
Both characters have good intentions and equal but different strengths and flaws.
THAT is what this scene is really about, because let's face it, these two turtles are more complex characters than Don and Mike and their opposing tension is interesting in that they're both on equal but opposing footing in the way they go about pursuing the same ends.
In the end, though, the ultimate lesson shown by this whole movie is that opposite personalities work better in tandem to compensate and back each other up, and that's what real families DO for each other.
@dollors1 Actually this movie was made with darker, more adult themes - similar to the original TMNT comics. That being said, even if this was a children's movie, there's no harm in including themes like brotherhood, unity, family and honor. Brilliant movie for kids and adults.

Did you see that.. it looks like leo turns his blades to ensure it locks with the sai's blades.. it looks like he intentionally put himself in a vunerable position.. Do you think leo was fighting or teaching?

he did that on purpose to show raphael what anger can do. so leo was planning to die...on purpose to teach raph a lesson..

He wouldn't die just to each his bro a lesson. I don't know why everybody loves Leo so much, Raphs the best. He's the only independent thinker of the group, and he actually faced the fact that crime didn't stop when they stopped fighting it. Raph FTW!!
