Absolutely beautiful, both Joni, her voice, and this song. Clouds pass, the sun will shine, it takes time and the strength to weather the weather, whether or not it gets easier, until the sun finally comes and it will,.... never stop, never give up, always believe and it will happen.
This song really does take on a whole new meaning and significance from this perspective. It's almost as if she couldn't really have written this song when she did. How could she? She hadn't really lived long enough yet, and yet I suppose she had from her perspective back then. The way she used to sing it was from a much younger point of view, but still she had had enough experience in life at that time to draw on to write this beautiful, but profoundly sad song.
yes we must never give up on our dreams how ever hard it seems on times - your dreams keep you going in the bad times and lift you. Love this song and now older the words seem to mean more than when she sung it when young
What is amazing is that she wrote this song in her early 20s. And now she is finally old enough to sing it. I wonder how connected she feels with her 35 year younger self. I feel none with mine. And if I were performing something my previous self had written 35 before, I'd feel like a fraud. Maybe she has lived her life backwards like Merlin the E. B. White King Arthur story.
Hah! It might have been a bigger hit for Judy Collins but Joni Mitchell wrote it and you can take that to the bank. I don't think she ever in her life covered anyone else's material.
From Wikipedia:
"Both Sides, Now" is a song by Joni Mitchell. Her recording first appeared on the album Clouds, released in 1969. She re-recorded the song in a Jazz style for the album of the same name, released in 2000.
It is one of Joni Mitchell's best-known songs (with "Big Yellow Taxi," "Woodstock," and "A Case of You"). It was written in March 1967, inspired by a passage in Henderson the Rain King by Saul Bellow.[1]
Judy Collins made the first commercially released recording of the song in 1968, shortly after Mitchell wrote it, which reached #8 on the U.S. pop singles charts and won a 1968 Grammy Award for Best Folk Performance. The record peaked at #3 on Billboard's Easy Listening survey.
this is the version that i know and love. the slow version. i don't even like the old version, having heard this first. this is breathtaking. the lyrics always belonged to an old soul; perhaps that's why this version is so powerful...
You are right...it is very powerful...it's her journey that has made it this powerful...if you ever get the chance, check out her bio on dvd....netflix has it and some later concerts as well...outstanding woman & muse <3
When? Well I like to believe that everything comes around again ...sooner or later. I like you , love this song and I will never tire of it. I know life and I know love.

so your voice changes -- do you try to mask it? Or, do you use it.
Oh, did she use it ...

I have never been moved so much by a song. Everything about it is perfect. Every element that went into it sincerely touched every part of me.

Though I'm not crazy about this version of the song, I like her older, deeper voice. I always found her voice a little shrill when she was young.

This arrangement is absolutely haunting. The strings...exquisite. You can see people crying in the audience at the end.

I love the discordant orchestral background, perfect for this song. Whoever arranged this is a genius - oh, it was probably Joni!

>..she wrote this song ...
no she didn't. It's Judy Collins' song.
And I don't agree that this version is any better than the older rendidtions, but that comes down to taste.

That Joni wrote this when she is young and is re-interpreting it now 35 years later is the whole point of this performance!

If this song doesn't relay exactly what life is all about, then I really don't know life at all! It's all life's illusion that I recall.
Though life may be different for all of us, somehow we have these relatively common way of living it. We all love and get hurt and still love again.
Beautifu song. The blaming part, I love it! "and they rain and they snow on everyone, so many things I would have done but clouds got in my way"
When can we make meaningful songs like this again?
