mostly open, output depends more on stack material and other factors. various mods in the latest version (in a sort of thermal-organ-meets-pedal-steel-guitar....)
Freq range for this set was about 250 to 880 Hz, more or less an octave and a half above middle C. Range can be extended by changing the size of cells in the thermoacoustic "stack.".
Sounds like it should be part of a puzzle in Myst.

what did did you use for cooling at the back? did you use a capillary bundle, or are they just open?

Sound intensity was about 83 dB at 1 meter.
