Terrible value. If public schools bought this, politician would be hanged for wasting money. I think it's just more crap being pedaled by sales people. New furniture is not what makes students interested in learning.
meh video, never does it once mention that it was designed by IDEO. Ideas like this arent created by marketers or business, they are designed by designers.
Yeah, I'm not going to lie, for $450, I'm underwhelmed. Yeah, a place for a bag is nice, and the hinge for adjusting distance between yourself and the surface is cool as well, but I don't think it's $450 of innovation. Albeit, I've never actually seen a chair/desk combo with a sane desk size.
$289 without the work surface +$160 for work surface and an additional $20 for a cup holder with a grand total of $469 you have gotta be shitting me.. i could buy a very nice office chair AND desk for that price..
Wow this seems like it would be annoying as HELL. We've all had some eff-tard sitting in a seat in front of us in a class where we're trying to pay attention. Used to be he would just look around the room, lie down, sit up, wave his arms...
Honestly, the only innovative thing I see is that its an expensive swivel chair, with an unnecessary platform for holding materials. A metal basket under our desk chairs works just fine, and the construction is light enough that you can just grab it by the table and the seat back to pick it up and move it easily. Alternatively, they invented those felt sticky pads for the legs. It seems over the top, and out of reach for most public schools.
Comfort is okay, but there are far too many accessories and things to distract both the students and the teacher. In theory it is clever, but there is a reason most classrooms have motionless desks. A more effective alternative would simply be to use more comfortable material.
@Nilthyfigger As a person with ADHD, there is a possibility that people like me are diagnosed with ADHD because they are so distracted in class. This is just a chair that makes it a little easier to change the classroom orientation, while serving as extra distraction. The problem is the teaching system and the teachers of today, not the chair.
Skip to 1:40 to hear them talk about the actual chair... interesting concept, but it'll take a few decades to even have a chance of taking off. Schools are very conservative for the most part, slow to adopt new things, and now seriously short on cash as well. Nothing I saw here was so innovative that people will rush to buy it, especially if the price is too high because of small numbers of them being made.
They had some of these in one of my college classes. Honestly I found the movement of the chair distracting. It was also hard to get comfortable or rest my arms on my desk as it would shift around.
@rodgerdodgerowl -- We're glad you like the node chair. FYI - they will be available for online purchase through the Steelcase Store starting March 5.
I'm sorry, while this may be 'back to the drawing board', there's not been an awful lot of thinking outside the box on this. Taking the crazy concept of bolting a note taking surface to a chair and modifying it to be a bit more usable just doesn't seem that revolutionary to me. In the UK, in school, you get to sit in a cheap chair at a cheap desk, replacing the chairs with adjustable chairs, as you'd find in any office, would make for an ergonomic work environment and that's an old old concept.
These are a god send especially for us lefties! Back in high school I could never concentrate because trying to write on a desk made for only righties was torture. I'm also very fidgety so I can do that and still be paying attention. Its odd to say I can't wait to enroll to Tribeca simply because they have these kind of desks, lol!
i taught a semester at IU in a classroom equipped with these chairs. it proved to be a major improvement in the teaching and learning experience. such a simple change in the room created a much more enriching environment for all of us. thank you for this!
@samhilltarnation --- we're thrilled to hear that the node chairs helped create a richer learning environment for your class. Thank you for sharing your comments with us.
I'm left handed and this desk looks amazing for left-handers! I'm always sick of sitting in right handed desks because it's a pain to write and to take tests on. I'm glad they made a desk that has a table top look.
@keelykay333 -- Thank you for the great feedback. When we design products, like the node chair, our goal is to make it a great user experience for all users. We're glad you are enjoying using the node chair.
