Eastgate is a good player (thousands are) but he lacks heart. Sure, perhaps he read this hand wrong, but I really don't think so. As we've seen in HSP and here he is often too cautious when the stakes are high. Certainly it worked out for him in the end, but this is what seperates a great player (Matusow, Durrrr, Patrik Antonius, Gus Hansen, Doyle Brunson etc) from a good "solid" player. If you make a read (which I'm sure he did) follow through with it and shoot that last bullet.

It's really a tossup whether he folds there or calls if his opponent has AK. However, since there is a strong possibility his opponent has a pocket pair, this should be considered in the calculation (rather than simply hoping he doesn't). Definitely should have been an insta-fold. Hell, even if he has AK, is that the table image you want to give everyone..that you will raise with horrible cards? Even if it were slightly better to call there, due to table image it could be better to fold.
