Come on guys, it's not that bad. If we had never heard Little Richard's magnificent original version, I am sure we would find this squeaky-clean version quite good.
Just think......THIS was the crap that Dick Clark was trying to promote while trying to get Alan Freed off the air with PAYOLA. Pat Boone looks like he is auditioning for the WHITEST MAN ON PLANET EARTH award.
@honeegrrl I'm just grateful that someone posted this because it shows a whole new generation just what diabolical things Pat Boone could do to material like this. He had us laughing until the tears ran down our faces. When Pat Boone got up to sing there wasn't a dry seat in the theatre. Added to that, he wore a toupee and we lived in hope that it would fly off mid-song. Sadly it never did. They don't make 'em like him any more.
wonder if he wrote home telling his family he found his "special purpose"?.....get it?...the snapping?....the jerk?.......aw you kids with yer....yer make out pah-ties....*sigh*....
Pat wasn't a racist. Read some of his stuff--good Christian guy and he COULD sing sure sold a LOT of records--Only Elvis sold more as a solo in the 60''s
I do not think Mike Seeger, Pete Seeger, Doc Watson or David Holt would aprove of this. I gotta say I do listen to Rock if it has good guitar sound. But I listen to Old Time, Country, Folk, Country Blues, Ragtime, Celtic, Jazz, Blues, and Bluegrass. I play banjo and I would never play this crappy cover on my banjo. I do like Led Zepphlin's song with a banjo in it.
They didn’t want me to be in the white guys’ way… I felt I was pushed into a rhythm and blues corner to keep out of rockers’ way, because that’s where the money is. When ‘Tutti Frutti’ came out… They needed a rock star to block me out of white homes because I was a hero to white kids. The white kids would have Pat Boone upon the dresser and me in the drawer ‘cause they liked my version better, but the families didn’t want me because of the image that I was projecting."- Little Richard
Pat Boone made money by covering black artists and then selling it in segregated parts of the country, Elvis did the same thing he only Elvis had talent and appeal outside of the south, he wasn't just a cheap knock off
from wikipedia: "According to an opinion poll of high school students in 1957, the singer was nearly the "two-to-one favorite over Elvis Presley among boys and preferred almost three-to-one by girls...[obscure citation provided]". in 1957 ... pat boone ... more popular than elvis with kids ... what the HELL?! which high school students were these? the special-ed kids?*
people just don't get it...in the 50s, the mainstream artists sing so many cover version....read about it.... the platters, elvis all sings tonnes of cover versions..it's the trend those days
The music industry was divided back then. White pop artists for the white cosmopolitan masses, black R&B artists for the black audiences and country artists for the southern and rural white audiences. Covers went every which way. It was the only way to get a song to everyone. I am not saying this was right. It was the way it was until Alan Freed changed things.
@snotjello Long before Richard recorded this, he performed it at his shows as "Tutti Frutti, Loose Booty." It was a very raucous and sexual song and was considered too suggestive for white audiences, so it was cleaned up considerably when he recorded it. The chorus was changed to "Tutti Frutti, aw Rudi," and the lyrics "A good Goddamn" were altered to "a wop bam boom."
He never wanted to do this song. He understood it was completely outside his style and he could never do it justice. But his record label wanted to jump in on that exciting new "Race Music" and got their top star, "Love Letters in the Sand" singer Boone to do the Little Richard cover. Boone's white fans liked it, but today it is remembered as the worse cover of all time.
Cold thing is this guy made more money off of this song than Little Richard because of racism!! America has an awful historical record. Shame cause she could be much better than that!!
wow its like impossible to believe that this was done in seriousness, and its even moe unbelievable that it was more popular than the orignial. Lets just say it IT SUCKS!
Pat Boone was a mediocre musician who made his career pandering to racism. If you apologize for or support Pat Boone you place yourself firmly on the side that turned on the fire hoses in Birmingham.

pat boone is a good christian man who campaigned for ronald reagan.reagan won the cold war.he signed mlk day into a holiday.today we should honor ronald reagan with a national holiday ''Ronald Reagan day'',because he won the cold war.this cover of tutti frutti by pat boone is not bad.the worst cover ever is the beatles awful awful awful screaming version of the great isley brothers ''twist and shout''.the best cover is ''little darlin'' by the diamonds,1957.allen west for president 2012!!!
For God sakes, Pat Boone was an excellent artist in his own right, he had his own style. I'm really not sure why people have to fly off the handle at him for no reason.... everyone did covers back then. You think Elvis was the first to record Hound Dog? Or that the Beatles wrote Twist and Shout?
@ChrisPenta The point is that Pat Boone specialized in remaking songs by black artists and selling them to racist little white teenagers... I guess that was alright back in the day but history does not view it so kindly.
@jscott1000 Pat Boone was an ordinary artist like any other... He occasionally recorded covers of popular songs to cash in on them, like any other artist. Racism doesn't enter into it besides maybe parents took him to be a less threatening face of rock and roll... Where did you think Vanilla Ice and Eminem got their popularity? This venomous hatred over a guy's mediocre cover of a now obscure song is moronic.
@ChrisPenta Well you can think whatever you like, but you can't re-write history. The fact is that radio back in the late 50s was not ready to play Little Richard, so Pat Boone capitalized on the racist nature of the industry to make a lot of money by re-distributing the song to a wider audience. In a different Universe where civil rights came a decade earlier Pat Boone would have never made a dime remaking songs by far superior artists.
@jscott1000 While I agree that these songs didn't get the proper coverage on the radio back in the day, Pat Boone disliked doing covers of these songs as much as you dislike listening to them, he was already an established artist and was pressured into it by his producers. You are trying to compare apples to oranges and then presume racism, which I don't inherently disagree with, but you can't attack Pat Boone personally for it, just isn't fair. He does a decent cover in his own style.
@jscott1000 The kids weren't racist it was their parents who would not permit black or "race" records in the house. Many bought them anyway.. also it's hard to understand this without understanding that racism was in many cases permitted or even encouraged back in those days, it was "in fashion".. not to make excuses for anyone but in those times all this seemed to make more sense although it is just wrong, most people would agree in our day and age.
well this is history right here. it gives you a glimpse into americas past. black music was called race music and white people remade black folks music. dont be made at it take it as a lesson of how far we have come in america. but we still have a long ass way to go
this really sucks big time...almost as bad as the Andy Williams version of MOON RIVER that another no talent ripped off from the ICEMAN, the fabulous Jerry Butler.
I'm really surprised that somebody hasn't commented on how this is so much better than Justin Bieber (or just "the crap we have today" in general). It seems like those comments are on every single video of an older song.
