@soldi86 It's not concrete. Even if it was concrete the drill holes are uniform, the cut width and depth are also uniform with a high degree of tolerance. Even if these were made sans power tools, the technique to manufacture still surpasses and evades our contemporary conjectures. Many of these stones are found buried under 30 feet of mud which covers the whole entire valley. As you can see, the stones have been tossed from some ancient disaster which is why they lie chaotically in situ.

The metal "H' connectors have been found, but many were gone. Since many were missing when found, the question remains, did they rust away and only a few remain? After pondering this for years, I've become convinced that human beings have been 'cycling' here on earth forever. Civilizations come and go with cataclysms. That is the reason the history is hidden, it exposed the fragile nature and impermanence of life. In addition to cycling, there is a lot of evidence to show that human beings come in many many forms, not just today's modern sapien, and I have no doubt that some of those forms were more advanced, larger brained and probably very different.

Every time I see video's of Puma Punku. I see a foundry. The large flat slabs are where you place the molds to be poured. The other stones are the molds themselves. The clips that held the flat slabs together were to prevent the slab pieces from separating during cooling. As for the grove with the holes that run the length, looks like a handrail to me.

Of an other item of interest : Look at the iron pillar of Delhi. Dating back easily to the 5th Century A.D....it stands 23 feet in height and is aligned with the summer solstice. The inscriptions relate of Lord Vishnu in Sanskrit. Check out the Maha bharata regarding "ancient" weapons and flying craft. The fact is the this iron pillar is almost 100% pure iron and wrought by manufacture. This indeed would have been a talent! And after 1,600 years it has very little corrosion at all.!

The fact that such work was done in the 1400's proves what people can do with their hands and their wits. We can then look at work from 1000 and 2000 years earlier and see similar stonework. There is an old proverb, "when a pickpocket meets a saint, he sees only pockets". Likewise, when a machinery engineer meets an object, he sees only machinery. He may not be willing to conceiving of simpler, more elegant solutions.

The Egyptians seems to learn a process and then got sloppier (maybe some forgotten techniques? ) as time goes on. Start by visiting a 15th century Italian church, and look at the marble wall panels- they are now faded, but it's clear that they were hand cut and hand polished to incredibly precise mirror finishes, without the benefit of your fancy machinery. We have documentation on the lives and technology of the middle ages and renaissance, so we know that was all hand work. Metallurgy was a bit more advanced in the 1400s than it was 3000 years earlier, but not to an extreme degree.

I realize what you are saying, but that is what makes Puma punku special. Chris Dunn, a noted engineer was there in January. He told me that he brought his precision instruments. A 12 inch diameter flat surface he tested was truly flat; within 1/50,000 of an inch over a 12 inch length...hand sanding?

@brienfoerster Tool marks are easy to remove. Start by cutting cleanly and you leave very few tool marks, and then a little rubbing with an abrasive stone and the marks will be removed. It's not rocket science.

Oh come on. I have been a sculptor for 40 years, and so I know when something has been done with hand tools and cleaned up with abrasives, or by a router. This is much closer to the latter.

@brienfoerster Look at the Parthenon, the Roman statues, Salisbury Cathedral; all cut and cleaned up by hand. I never liked abrasives so I learned early on to carve work to a point where, if it needed sanding, I could go straight from chisel to a 220 or 400 grit.

All of that can be done with the simplest of hand tools- hammers, chisels, hand drills, abrasive rubbing stones, and basic measuring devices. (caliper, square, etc.)

It didn't require high technology, it just required a sense that the quality of the work was more important than the man hours spent on the work.
