Yeah using an external source is a night and day different in sound quality. Do a youtube search on "Zoom H1" and "Zoom H2".

You guys should buy a stand alone audio recorder. They record audio at a quality level 5x better than the in camera mic, then you can automatically sync the audio over the video using a software called pluraleyes. Here is what I recommend: Zoom H1 Ultra-Portable Digital Audio Recorder
