  • this is a great clip of a wonderful, hypnotic song. phil sounds fantastic! no doubt it's always been my favorite dead tune. no solo after verse 2 though - it actually doesn't really need one it flows along magically without. now everybody will knock me for this but some of jerry's solos on "box" were less than magical but his pedal steal on american beauty was superb. peace to all.

  • Jerry would be pleased to have Warren playing with the boys and carrying on the music.

  • Although it's a GREAT PHIL TUNE. THIS IS NOT THE GRATEFUL DEAD. The so called "THE DEAD" is more like a cover band making money off of Jerry.

  • @kentthundercat The Grateful Dead members all considered them to be equal members of the band. Jerry did write a lot of the music, but so did the rest of the guys. The Dead are not a cover band since all but few of the members are ACTUAL and equal members of the Grateful Dead. These people are allowed to play whatever Dead tunes they please. And they are not doing it for the money. The Dead were probably the only true band that was not in it for money. These guys are just carrying on the music.

  • @kentthundercat I voted your comment up, just because i said the same thing "This is "The Dead" not "The Grateful Dead" but I wouldnt consider "The Dead" a cover band since they were members of "The Grateful Dead" Its all semantics really....

  • @kentthundercat Jerry wasn't the only person in the band.

  • Wait this aint the dead but hell its some of the remains of the dead and they still sound like the dead ... sorta. Is that Warren Haynes?

  • I gave my piano away..

  • this song is about someone dad dying and what he can do to help him through.....it makes me cry and miss my dad so much

  • @plumbergirl74 Phil Lesh wrote it about his father who had terminal cancer. <3

  • @OhFFSGimmeAName

I think Robert Hunter wrote it for Phil so Phil could sing it to his dad in the hospital before he passed on. I could be wrong.

  • @jloneill17 Yep you're right. Since I posted that comment my love for this song's just increased over and over again heh. I believe it's down as Hunter/Lesh cause Lesh wrote all the melody etc and Hunter just banged out the (flawless) lyrics.

  • OOooooo.... box of organs....i love this song!

  • Reminds me of my Wilkes College days in the late 1980s. Saw Little Feat and listened to the Grateful Dead constantly in the dorm.
