@darthirakli Yep, but they don't like to mention that bit. It's like them bragging about Time Machine when Windows ME had system restore ;)

I just set up a new Mac for a customer, and it also HAS this feature. Everytime I installed something a popup windows would come up asking if it was OK to make the change.
@bioha2ar3 we still can... a larger library of games to choose from... Not only that Vista could play the security card over Mac... hows that you ask??? in 2009 3 laptops, running Vista, Mac osx, and Linux ubuntu, were all hacked as part of a competition, the Mac got hacked in under 2 minutes...
Bill Gates is to Apple, as what Jesus is to Christianity... its saviour - iBa!nesy
Really, google 1997, $150 million, microsoft bail out apple
It's actually worse than this because it takes at lest 10 seconds and sometimes even 5 minutes to even see the cancel or allow thing, and it's not just one but there's 2 different of those.. so if you try to launch some suspicious looking app many times you see those stupid cancel or allow pop up windows coming one after other
I like using linux and I even have a virtual machine running the latest development releases of ubuntu. The unfortunate thing is ubuntu has this annoying authentication where I have to type my password to do simple things like run the update manager or (un)install software. Does anyone know how I can turn this off completely? It drives me crazy and all it does for me is slow me down.
@wwelover999 totally agree... but hey, if i was gonna buy a computer, i look at my uses. What am i gonna do? Play games and customize my computer to full power? or buy a computer that has a smaller failure rate than a pc... You said that because you play games. btw, Civ IV is available on Mac. Theres other games too but of course not even 1/100th of what PC has.
@wwelover999 I really dislike comments like these, because it's like you guys never even owned a mac, sure, there is LESS games for mac, but there is still games (And good ones) for it, and why on earth is it always about games? Not everybody uses a computer for games you know.
That's such a TYPICAL Windows-user argument. The "gaming" thing. So the fuck what? If I want a machine that will play GAMES, I'm going to get a GAMING BOX because its built to, you know, play GAMES.
Just thought I'd point that out to you.. You know, since they're all running outdated 5 year old hardware. My PC isn't... probably paid less than you did for a mac too.
@wwelover999 sorry to tell you, but Civilization as well as CoD have been available on mac for quite some time now. Macs are not a great gaming platform, taking the game variety into account, but it's getting there especially after steam was released for mac - and you still don't have to worry about finding the right combination of bios-settings and graphics card drivers to get your favorite game to work - it just does.
@zakiwasik The driver SUCK BALLS. You just cannot get decent FPS on a Mac in anything. And btw by driver settings you mean like OCing? Why would anyone want a free 30%+ CPU boost for free anyway?
@andershizzle "Too bad you can play CoD and CiV IV on a Mac, lol"
Yep. On a shit GPU, RAM that's new 5 years ago, and only a mid range CPU (unless you want to fork out 2G's for an upgrade to an i7 2600). Yeah. You can play those games on a Mac. On limited settings.
Or you can build a $1600 PC and play those games the way they were MEANT to be played. On HIGHEST settings. No lag. No worry.
@RustyRampRade Oh I'd hire the dirty hipster kid. His fixed gear bicycle and micro brew beer that no one has ever heard of will definitely progress my company. Oh yeah and dont forget about his new age arrogance.
This is my favorite ad of the bunch. I especially like 0:09 when Mac starts to blurt out "what the f..." and they cut away before he can finish the phrase.
For all i-know-nothing-about-what-i-say's (synonym for mac-fans):
Mac is a computer. Period. When you buy a computer, you pay for it's hardware and software. Buying a Mac means you pay twice the hardware's costs for an OS which -after a point- had to support other OSs to run other softwares. And by spending that much money, you get an upgradable-but-limited piece of metal, looking "nice" on your desk. And you pay that much money to pay much more when you try to upgrade it.
You know what I noticed with Apple: whenever something really simple is introduced with their systems like a low end Intel processor, a DVD drive or 64 bit computing, they treat it as a big accomplishment. They actually named an ordinary DVD drive a "SuperDrive." It's not super in any sense of the word.
I love Apple, but that's their only problem. They exaggerate everything; I bet they're going to start calling the menu bar an UltraMenu.
Very true. It's why, in an era when DDR4 memory is about to drop, that Apple is still using 1066 and 1333Mhz DDR3. It's why they hang back and use cheap $90 video cards for the Mac Pro. Anyone who has seen the price tag of that stupid thing SHOULD be able to theorize a problem. Macs will ALWAYS be behind. They will ALWAYS be underpowered. And, as Apple's history of massive price-gouging and profiteering shows, they will ALWAYS overcharge for inferiority.
Security checks are always a hassle but that's what it takes to keep hackers from fucking with your PC. I personally like it, because it gives me a sense of control.
@heal0111 wow i love microsoft, but the zune and windows phone were both fails, so i dont think those should count. I think the Xbox 360 would have been better instead of the zune of the phone
I hate this. So. Lets tell i have Dosbox. I install it, and config it, and now ima gonna install Red Alert. Everithing works just like on Linux, but, when files began to copy, i got some strange errors, rhat ima not able to create file or something about that, I search all the internet to find what is my problem. Then, i tryed everithing to get it to work. Once i wasted all posibilities, i tryed to run it as admin. And tr works. And every time i start Dosbox now, it shows that stupid box!!
@merkur32123 That's probably a folder permission error. The application running at user level is trying to write to a folder that needs admin permission to modify. I have this problem on a lot of old applications, change the folder permissions where the application is installed to allow the users group full control, it should run fine without having to run as admin.
@arthmus01 Thanx for helping out but i no longer a Windows user (I was just testing Windows 7 becaus the people were like: "YOU MAN? KOW HOW 7 IS AWESOME?!? If rapes your Linux into his ASS, Try it!", and my resounts: I dont like windows. I was testting just 2 months and i got alot of BSoDs.). Maybie i will try this when people will force me to test out Windows 8 when will it come out.
IF you're getting "alot of BSoDs" then it's YOUR FAULT. I'm currently running Windows 7 on a total of 18 computers as of the beginning of this month. Not a single BSOD, hitch, slowdown, freeze, or hiccup.
Before that I was running Windows XP on a multitude of machines for approximately 10 years. In that whole time, not a single BSOD, hitch, slowdown, freeze, or hiccup.
So obviously you're doing something wrong. No, don't argue. You are.
I've seen Linux distros like Mint crash right after the installation was finished, so don't tell me that. Linux has more bugs and security exploits than the community is brave enough to admit, and 64-Bit builds are NOTORIOUSLY insecure, so don't tell me it's an airtight OS.
Even professional hackers like Charlie Miller (a former NSA Security operative) said that Linux is EASIER to hack and exploit than Windows is.
The only reason why Mac doesn't have many viruses is because it only has about 5% market share. If the Mac computers had 60% market share than many of the no-life geeks that code the viruses and trojans will put their genius ideas into the Mac system.
Don't believe me? Good. Can't wait till you try to turn on your Mac one day and it doesn't turn on.
@sabdow Actually, that number is 21%, not counting the iPod/Pad/Phone. Secondly, Apple hasn't touched the basis of OS X in almost 11 years now, and it's still almost completely virus-proof. And I'm sure there are a few no-life geeks who have the ability and know-how to create a Mac virus. But why, when you can still attack the other 79% with ridiculous ease?
He's right, you're wrong. Macs do NOT have 21% market share, that's ridiculous. IDN business stats recently showed Apple's market share dwindling for the past 4 months from 5.7% to 5%.
PERIOD. Let's not be silly and just pull figures out of our ass, Okay kiddo? Otherwise, show me some proof. Also, there are 15,000 viruses written for the Mac platform, so you're wrong again.
Now tell me why Macs were the FIRST to fall at Pwn2Own 3 years in a row?
its funny how this form of authentication is in almost every OS: windows - UAC linux - sudo or su AND mac os x - authentication dialogue (dont know what its called but probably just a frontend for sudo) HYPOCRISY!
I'm gonna say this is quit false since Norton Antivirus does alot of stuff automatically as you wish, they only warn you when your subscribtion is gonna expire. :D
@takedasamurai and linux has even less usage share (and is at least on par with os x for security bcos their both unix like) and a 'PC' could be running linux, so this ad is wrong
@rinanina101 Simply because the ad's are entertaining, but that dosent change the fact that i simply prefer pc's because macs dont have anything to offer me as a gamer/programmer
@rinanina101 first never said ive never used macs before, i had one for a year to see if they were better, and they realy were as laggy as pc's and they sucked for me since they offer nothing fro programers or gamers, theyre more for artists. as for the "truth" of the vids, i never said they were true but i agree with most ones about vista, as for win 7 and win xp ive used both and they have given me like 8 crashes in 5 years and like 1 virus(completley my fault) so the problems arent that usual
@ugaboj Enjoy playing Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Starcraft 2, Assassins Creed and Dragon Age on my macbook pro... So saying Mac offers nothing for gamers seems a bit of a silly statement. For programmers, well I can't really tell, never tried programming on mac, but for that you have Linux... ;) Sure i prefer to use my Macbook for working mostly, design and film kind of requires a machine that works... PC's generally don't just work...
@gerhardthirion well it might offer something for a realy casual gamer but its got ALOT of games it dosent support in comparance to windows. as for Linux, yeah that def beats both mac and win at programing, but i simply prefer using a windows since if you do want to use linux for both games and programming then you need to realy realy cutomize it which takes a while so i cbt to do it :P, at any rates personally i consider macs more of a student and/or artist computer
@Someone7089 One more thing I wanted to note was if you want to compare desktop towers you can look at any current OEM-built tower and compare it to the iMac; e.g. a Dell Studio XPS.
@Someone7089 Your build sounds rather expensive if you self-built it for those specifications. The E8500 was released first quarter '08 and wasn't even that costly when it was new. Keep in mind none of the iMacs actually have desktop GPUs. What Apple refers to as a "Radeon HD 5670" is actually a Mobility Radeon HD 5730. I'd expect your 9800GTX to outperform it easily. The CPU on the iMac is significantly better than yours but this deals with a release date issue.
I disagree. A desktop GeForce 9800GTX should kill a Mobility Radeon HD 5730. Now if it was the desktop counterpart, the iMac would be more likely to win. Also I'm guessing your machine is more than 1 year old (even if under two years) unless you intentionally used lower end specifications. Bloomfield and Lynnfield CPUs were already out a year ago even if Clarkdale hadn't arrived yet. Though Bloomfield was quite expensive, Lynnfield was reasonably priced at launch.
@Someone7089 "Just stop trying to prove something to me."
Heh, you started it. Very well; I'll end the debate here. One final comment though is I'd consider an $800 difference in hardware costs (~34% of the total cost) a rather significant difference in price.
Next let's assume the user doesn't necessarily want a gaming laptop. HP's Envy 17 with fairly similar specifications runs at $1,400 with 2GB more of RAM, a 7200 RPM hard drive, and a Radeon 5850 than the 17" MBP.
I'm not arguing Apple never makes somewhat price-competitive models (albeit it is uncommon for them to do so). However it takes effort to find a laptop that break the $2,000 mark with such low specifications.
@Someone7089 If you want to compare hardware I suggest dealing with current available hardware. Let's start with specification count. The Asus G73JH-X1 currently runs for $1,400 at Newegg and features a better CPU, double the RAM (at a higher clockspeed), a much better graphics card, and a longer warranty (with accidental damage protection) than Apple's stock MBP at $2,300.
@Someone7089 First of all, I do not see how your custom built gaming PC cost you over $2,000 and only features a Core 2 Duo and 4GB of RAM. Second of all, you're dealing with devices purchased in different years after technology prices have fallen. Lastly, I don't see how your doing this comparison; you're comparing your desktop computer's hardware which by now is likely to be over a year old and cost less to a laptop with weaker hardware in a market that has been seeing falling hardware prices.
@Someone7089 RAM on board the GPU doesn't reflect the quality of the GPU itself. If you paid anywhere near that amount for a gaming PC with similar hardware (in a comparable time frame) then you were simply ripped off. Even an Alienware M17x (which IMO is quite overpriced) is significantly cheaper. A more price-competitive option would be the ASUS G73JH-B1 which is cheaper than Apple's cheapest 15" option
I disable UAC the first thing when i install win 7 on pcs, UAC is only there for old ppl that have their first experience on a computer, and kids that have no idea what they are installing. 0 virus so far.
Actually, every single computer engineer/programmer I spoke with said NOT to get a Mac. Anyone who says Macs are superior to PCs obviously does not know what a PC can do. PCs usually have better specs than Macs to begin with, plus they are upgradable. Not to mention that they are 1/4 the price. Macs are just so easily marketable because of their built-in webcams and shiny-look. And then that age-old statement "Macs never slow down and don't get viruses". BS. I have used Macs before, I prefer PC.
steve jobs is a blood sucking parasite who lures little boys into his gingerbread house. what happens if you get bitdefender huh? the too many viruses and crashes is null and void. mac is so overpriced that its more expensive than getting a pc 3 times. they put features in a new os that they should have put in the first os anyway, allowing you to waste your money. os x lion is going to be a waste. just keep windows 7, and you'll be set for a long time. why is windows 7 bad ,any reason? MAC SUCKS
Ahh the good ol' vista days.

Nihatcangorgun 1 year ago 2
You know what I noticed with Apple: whenever something really simple is introduced with their systems like a low end Intel processor, a DVD drive or 64 bit computing, they treat it as a big accomplishment. They actually named an ordinary DVD drive a "SuperDrive." It's not super in any sense of the word.
I love Apple, but that's their only problem. They exaggerate everything; I bet they're going to start calling the menu bar an UltraMenu.
videodude1298 1 year ago
@videodude1298
And, as Apple's history of massive price-gouging and profiteering shows, they will ALWAYS overcharge for inferiority.

merkur32123 1 year ago
@merkur32123 That's probably a folder permission error. The application running at user level is trying to write to a folder that needs admin permission to modify. I have this problem on a lot of old applications, change the folder permissions where the application is installed to allow the users group full control, it should run fine without having to run as admin.

Good. Can't wait till you try to turn on your Mac one day and it doesn't turn on.
sabdow 1 year ago
@sabdow Actually, that number is 21%, not counting the iPod/Pad/Phone. Secondly, Apple hasn't touched the basis of OS X in almost 11 years now, and it's still almost completely virus-proof. And I'm sure there are a few no-life geeks who have the ability and know-how to create a Mac virus. But why, when you can still attack the other 79% with ridiculous ease?
trapperj613 1 year ago
@trapperj613
Also, there are 15,000 viruses written for the Mac platform, so you're wrong again.

rinanina101 1 year ago
@rinanina101 first never said ive never used macs before, i had one for a year to see if they were better, and they realy were as laggy as pc's and they sucked for me since they offer nothing fro programers or gamers, theyre more for artists. as for the "truth" of the vids, i never said they were true but i agree with most ones about vista, as for win 7 and win xp ive used both and they have given me like 8 crashes in 5 years and like 1 virus(completley my fault) so the problems arent that usual
ugaboj 1 year ago
@ugaboj Enjoy playing Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Starcraft 2, Assassins Creed and Dragon Age on my macbook pro... So saying Mac offers nothing for gamers seems a bit of a silly statement. For programmers, well I can't really tell, never tried programming on mac, but for that you have Linux... ;) Sure i prefer to use my Macbook for working mostly, design and film kind of requires a machine that works... PC's generally don't just work...
gerhardthirion 1 year ago

LordDestros 1 year ago
@Someone7089 Your build sounds rather expensive if you self-built it for those specifications. The E8500 was released first quarter '08 and wasn't even that costly when it was new. Keep in mind none of the iMacs actually have desktop GPUs. What Apple refers to as a "Radeon HD 5670" is actually a Mobility Radeon HD 5730. I'd expect your 9800GTX to outperform it easily. The CPU on the iMac is significantly better than yours but this deals with a release date issue.
LordDestros 1 year ago

Heh, you started it. Very well; I'll end the debate here. One final comment though is I'd consider an $800 difference in hardware costs (~34% of the total cost) a rather significant difference in price.

NightmareCrab 1 year ago
@Someone7089
LordDestros 1 year ago
@Someone7089 If you want to compare hardware I suggest dealing with current available hardware. Let's start with specification count. The Asus G73JH-X1 currently runs for $1,400 at Newegg and features a better CPU, double the RAM (at a higher clockspeed), a much better graphics card, and a longer warranty (with accidental damage protection) than Apple's stock MBP at $2,300.
LordDestros 1 year ago
@Someone7089 First of all, I do not see how your custom built gaming PC cost you over $2,000 and only features a Core 2 Duo and 4GB of RAM. Second of all, you're dealing with devices purchased in different years after technology prices have fallen. Lastly, I don't see how your doing this comparison; you're comparing your desktop computer's hardware which by now is likely to be over a year old and cost less to a laptop with weaker hardware in a market that has been seeing falling hardware prices.
LordDestros 1 year ago
@Someone7089 RAM on board the GPU doesn't reflect the quality of the GPU itself. If you paid anywhere near that amount for a gaming PC with similar hardware (in a comparable time frame) then you were simply ripped off. Even an Alienware M17x (which IMO is quite overpriced) is significantly cheaper. A more price-competitive option would be the ASUS G73JH-B1 which is cheaper than Apple's cheapest 15" option
