I was 10 years old when that footage of the Stones coming out of the Holiday Inn in Florence, Al. During that time in Florence, if your hair was long enough that it laid down, the men thought you were a girl so the long hair and flashy clothes probably got a lot of disapproving looks. The Stones would tell curious waitresses in Muscle Shoals' diners that they were Martha and the Vandellas.

Actually Atlantic signed zeppelin in 68 and they stayed with them till their Swan Song label. So the Stones were at least the second rock band they had signed. Could you imagine signing both of these bands. A smart man indeed.

This was two years after the Muscle Shoals Rhythm secion left FAME to start Muscle Shoals sound..so it could be that the Stones thought they were going to that "Great room that cut all the Soul stuff in..what's it called, Muscle Shoals..."(FAME), but because Jerry Wexler had split with FAME and invested in Muscle Shoals sound, they ended up at the fledgeling Muscle Shoals Sound, which had only had 2 or 3 hits.....

Actually, Muscle Shoals Sound wasn't even that old, yet. They opened for business in April and the Stones arrived for three days of recording in early December '69. But yes, it appears that they thought that they were to record at FAME Studios, where the Swampers had cut all of those Soul sides. Fortunately, Andy Johns and Jimmy Miller never showed up, so they got to work exclusively with Jimmy Johnson, who gave them a great raw sound--one of the best drum sounds for Charlie ever recorded.
