There's some examples of covers that are better than the orgs. There's also a few examples of covers that are so different, that the comparison is hardly an issue.
You can do a cover song for many reasons.
1 Tribute: I always play an old Clash song as a tribute to Joe Strummer. Not because I have the slightest idea of doing it any better.
2 Because you happen to like that song
3 Try to alter it complete (like Melt Banana sometimes does, of Me First and the Gimme Gimmies. Or the Dickies)
me too - one of the greatest songs ever made. This was the song when the party went crazy. First time I have heard it for nearly 30 years. Fantastic memories
But it's certainly not 100%. Just because the cover artist owes the existance of their track the the original song, doesn't mean the original is better.
